I've heard great things about 7, but I won't bother with it until I build a new desktop. I've heard it doesn't boot as fast as XP and uses more electrons, so I won't put it on my netbook, and my current desktop is too old and weak to bother with.

Yeah that's really my question. You can do a "fresh install" if you have a previous version already installed but I am not sure if you need a previous version installed or not. If so that will be a huge PITA if you have a new hard drive and don't have cloning software.

It boots a lot faster on all of my machines. On this laptop for instance, I can get from power on to desktop in under half a minute (and that's including the POST).
 
Yeah so that's one review. I can't dispute it but I also don't believe that it is normal. I have read several that show just the opposite. I also have experienced the quicker boot time of Windows 7.

I just successfully installed a clean version. The only OS I had installed prior was RC 7100.

I installed it on a Netbook, Samsung N120 and YES it does boot a few seconds faster than XP.

Battery life isn't as good, but in my test it is only off about about 45 minutes. I can live with that considering I get about 7.5 hours with it.

Now I will say that you won't get a fast boot using Boot Camp on a Macintosh. But that is because of how Mac's boot.

We've installed Windows 7 on 2 notebooks and 3 desktops today... everyone has been really happy about how much quicker it boots and shuts down.

Every review I have seen (except for CNet's) says what I quoted. It boots faster but battery life isn't quite as good.
 
Everyone's experience will vary (because we're all using different hardware specs), but overall, reviews have been positive for Windows 7.

Only way you'll know if you're going to like it or not, is to give it a shot.
 
I am enjoying mine as well. Got it installed on my Laptop and my wife's netbook.

It is running very smooth.

New OS's are fun. :churn:

I LOVE reformatted computers. It's like a fresh wash/polish/tune up on a car. I tend to reformat all my computers every year or so just to get that "new car smell" back into them. Window 7 will be my next. :egypt:

I can't find those. The only comparisons I've found that show 7 with faster boot times than XP are from the preview copy back in January, or from more recent tests on Lenovo hardware. All of the others I can find say XP boots faster.

This is very true in our evalution and testing we did have various performance based on different age, processor speed and types, along with how much memory they have.

It doesn't matter that several of us have already said our boot faster, some want like scientific proof or something. OH CNet said it boots slower, so I am going hold on to that and just stay with XP. Okay!!! Go for it! The rest of us are moving on.

I'd dare say that in most cases it will boot as faster and maybe even faster. If it is slower we are generally talking a few seconds and then you have an overall better experience in all other aspects of the OS.

Microsoft tends to offer a lot of military discounts. I got Office 2007 for $20. I'm hoping that they'll be offering that for Windows 7. If not, I'll just buy it at full price.
