I didn't think the Cubans that I've had were worth the premium.
I'm sure I mentioned this somewhere on DRC, but back in 2005 or so, after having done a few Caribbean cruises, I was talking to a cigar shop owner about how the Cubans I got on the islands were not that good, but the Cohiba Siglos I got on my honeymoon in Aruba back in '97 were life-changing. He said the heyday for great Cubans ended in the late 90's. It's like wine; a lot of it has to do with climate, and rainfall, and soil conditions. Nicaragua had become the new Cuba.

Sure. It's like grapes to wine.

I had spent $40 to $50 each for some when I was in Toronto, London, and Copenhagen back between 1988 or so and 2008 or so. (The last one in 2008 was probably a bit more.) Every time I thought that they weren't any better than $10 or $12 smokes.

Dominicans and Hondurans usually seemed to be much better.

Speaking of "grapes to wine," smoke from all the California wildfires is crippling our wine industry. Vineyard grapes will have an ashy flavor as a result of what is called "smoke taint." There may not be any vintage 2020 wine – and we now have a new wildfire in the heart of wine country.

Twenty-five major wildfires are raging throughout California. The largest is the August Complex, a merger of 38 smaller fires that were caused by lightning strikes. It is spread across six northern California counties, has burned 970,563 acres (1,517 square miles) and is 51% contained.

The Caldor fire near Lake Tahoe has now burned 219,270 acres (343 square miles) and is 71% contained. It's destroyed 782 homes and 18 businesses and is now the 15th-largest wildfire in California history. Another wildfire has forced the closure of Sequoia National Park and has led to mandatory evacuations in the town of Three Rivers. The flames are about a mile from the Giant Forest, home to more than 2,000 giant sequoias including the 275-foot General Sherman tree, considered the world’s largest tree.

I don't care if she started the fire or not, anyone who calls themselves a shaman deserves at least 9 years locked up.

Forestry student-turned-shaman, 30, faces nine years in jail for 'starting California's Fawn Fire' that has burned 8,500 acres and destroyed 41 homes: DA suspects she could be 'serial arsonist'

So maybe some of this patriarchal shit ought to go away. I think "spokesman" ought to be "spokesperson," I think "chairman" ought to be "chairperson," I think "mankind" ought to be "humankind."

But they take it too far, they take themselves too seriously, they exaggerate. They want me to call that thing in the street a "person-hole cover;" I think that's taking it a little bit too far. What would you call a lady's man, a "person's person"? That would make a "He-man" an "It-person." Little kids would be afraid of "the boogieperson". They'd look up in the sky and see "the person in the moon". Guys would say, "Come back here and fight like a person," And we'd all sing "For it's a jolly good person." That's the kind of thing you would hear on Late Night with David Letter-Person.
