The entire capital city of the North West Territories in northern Canada (population 20,000) is being evacuated as a huge wildfire is heading its way. Looking at the map there is a inlet of Great Slave Lake protecting it but not sure how much protection it will offer given wind.
I didn't know people lived up here. But maybe the name isn't so bad; after all, they were "great" slaves!

The North West Territories originally spanned all the land west of Ontario. Very shortly after confederation, BC and Manitoba were carved out of the territory. In 1905, AB & SK were carved out. At some point the Yukon territory was also split off. Recently the eastern part of it was made Nunivit Territory (the spelling is no doubt wrong).
The capital of the Territories was Regina (now SK) once Regina was formed. In 1905, the capital was moved to Ottawa, ON. In 1967 it was moved to Yellowknife where it is today.
The entire population of the NWT is 44,826 and 20K of them live in Yellowknife.

In another area (BC) near Kelona, my sister reported that the cottage they owned for 27 years before they moved 2 years ago, and the whole complex it was in has been burned to the ground. There is nothing left. The fire is 5km from their new place. This is their second home so not the same level of tragedy as the people who have completely lost their primary residence but it still hurts. The wind has changed direction and if it keeps changed, the fire should avoid them .... this year. This is the 3rd year in a row where they have been threatened in some fashion by a fire. They couldn't get to their cottage now if they wanted to. The area has been evacuated and all roads closed.
Let's see if Mark Zuckerberg has a heart. Hey, we can always hope.

The Park Fire, so named because it started July 24 in Bidwell Park in Chico when a moron pushed a burning car into a ravine, has burned 552 square miles and destroyed 66 structures and is only 12% contained. More than 3,900 firefighters are battling the blaze.
