Tool
Genre: heavy rock, prog metal
Discovered: probably MTV, "Sober"
Other: The first four songs of Undertow are great. The next album is great with a couple exceptions. The next album has a few good songs but gets hoity-toity. Every song is six, eight, ten minutes, no radio edits -- well, technically this attitude started with Aemina's fifth single,
sent to radio stations on promos at 8:25, they couldn't trim the first 2 solid minutes of guitar clinking noises??. Anyway they started to lose me on the third album with long meandering (and boring) songs. Fourth album had a few good songs but again, don't make songs longer than they have to be just to show off (don't bore us, get to the chorus). We can see how talented you are in 4 minutes, and those are your best-remembered songs. They don't need to be 11 minutes of wanking. The fifth album (13 years later) was a big pretentious waste of time in my opinion. I never yawned so hard.
Homestar Runner (Strong Bad) did a good parody of Tool videos (and Scandinavian death metal bands) back in 2006
here. "Creeping, rusty, meat."
