They are one of my son's favourite bands. I saw them in Columbus, OH in 2019 along with my son and his cousins. I was the designated adult which was ok since I actually like them too. They came out with one which I have designated as the theme song of the Toronto Maple Leafs:

Twisted Sister

Genre: hard rock, hair metal

Discovered: MTV, "We're Not Gonna Take It"

Other: I was too young for their pre-"Take It" music. I loved Stay Hungry. When "Leader Of The Pack" showed up on MTV I was aghast. I still haven't forgiven them for that atrocity. I still bought the album hoping it wasn't bad. It was. I tried to like the songs "Come Out And Play", 'You Want What We Got" and "Be Chrool To Your Scuel" but within a few months, I'd tossed it aside. Not the just album, but the whole band in general. (Same story as Quiet Riot going from Metal Health to Condition Critical, actually)

HIGH FIVE:

1. We're Not Gonna Take It
2. I Wanna Rock
3. SMF
4. Burn In Hell
5. Stay Hungry

Ty Tabor

Genre: hard rock, rock

Discovered: knew him from King's X

Other: I have his third album, but can't find his first and sixth for a reasonable price. On eBay his first album is currently selling for $111 and $399 (or best offer). His sixth is up there for $32 including shipping.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Johnny Guitar
2. Had To Move
3. Freight Train
4. Funeral
5. Now I Am

Type O Negative

Genre: goth metal, sludge metal

Discovered: coworker "Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity"

Other: I was working at a convenience store and one of the other clerks had mentioned he liked them. Later, I went to Boston digging through vinyl and CD bins in dingy used music stores and saw a $2 CD by them, so I grabbed it. I brought it into work and said I bought it for him, but he said he didn't want it (he was always a 'too cool for the room' kinda guy). So I started listening and liked it. Later, he said he changed his mind. So I told him I changed my mind too and want to keep it because now I'm a fan. Good thing I ended up with it. The CD is worth some serious money now!

HIGH FIVE:

1. Black No 1
2. Christian Woman
3. Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity
4. Gravitational Constant
5. Summer Breeze

U2

Genre: rock, alt rock, alt pop

Discovered: FM, "I Will Follow (Live 1983)"

Other: I used to have "One" and "With Or Without You" on my 700+ fav songs of all ever list years ago, but they fell off. As for their 90s material, it's a mix of fantastic and horrific. I wrote the following in my review of their song "Get On Your Boots" back in 2009:

Some fans are comparing the band’s new experimental pop song to their incredible album Acthung Baby (think "Zoo Station" and "The Fly") while others are quick to liken it to their more embarrassing, gay bathhouse-era albums Zooropa and Pop (think "Lemon" and "Discothèque").

HIGH FIVE:

1. I Will Follow (Live 1983)
2. Bullet The Blue Sky
3. Love Is Blindness
4. Running To Stand Still
5. Beautiful Day

They have way too many good songs to pick favorites from.
I like some of the songs off of Zooropa and Pop, but Boots has some of the stupidist lyrics ever. If it would have been an instrumental, it would have been 100 times better. It almost seems like they went with those lyrics to see if they could make money putting out something that juvenile.

True. But sometimes that idea gets you into the top 10...

REM "Stand"

Michael Stipe: "I wrote the most inane lyrics that I could possibly write."

Peter Buck: "without a doubt ... the stupidest song we've ever written."

The Beatles topped the charts in 1967, thanks to Paul's melodic gifts, with these lyrics.

You say yes, I say no
You say stop and I say go go go, oh no

[Chorus]
You say goodbye and I say hello
Hello, hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello
Hello, hello
I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello

I used to spend time thinking of the lyrics "if bushes were trees, the trees would be falling ", and try to make sense of it. Guess that was a waste of time.

I didn't think Pop was that bad. One of their worst efforts collectively (Zooropa was worse) but some individual singles were pretty good.

My Top 5:

1. I will Follow
2. One
3. Where the Streets Have No Name
4. Desire
5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

Ultraspank

Genre: electronic metal, alt rock

Discovered: CMJ "Butter", same disc I discovered Getaway People, Pure and Guster.

Other: I went to see Sevendust back in '98 and started really digging the first opening act. When they got to the song "Butter" I realized I knew that one song from my CMJ CD. They were great live. Their radio song is "Where", but I like their heavier stuff.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Five
2. Butter
3. Push
4. Crumble
5. Fixed
