Theory-Of-A-Deadman-3-color-by-Jimmy-Fontaine-small-e1576269640801.jpg

Theory Of A Deadman

Genre: rock, hard rock, heavy rock

Discovered: don't remember

Other: They're basically 'Nickelback 2', so I shouldn't like them. And yes they have plenty of songs I don't like. But their first album (aside from its big hits) is actually pretty good (#1 #2 #3 below are deep album tracks from it). And usually rock singles written for trailer trash don't appeal to me, but surprisingly I like the first two singles from their third album (#4 and #5 below).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Any Other Way
2. Invisible Man
3. Leg To Stand On
4. So Happy
5. Bad Girlfriend

Thompson Twins

Genre: new wave, synth pop

Discovered: probably MTV, "Lies"

Other: I was surprised to see when my son was reading The Adventures Of Tin Tin in elementary school to see Thompson Twins in there, and learn 20 some years later where they'd got their name from.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Hold Me Now
2. Lies
3. Love On Your Side
4. Lay Your Hands On Me
5. King For A Day

Toad The Wet Sprocket

Genre: acoustic pop, pop rock

Discovered: probably FM, "All I Want"

Other: The girl I was dating at the time had her parents old record player (the kind that's big as a couch) in her apartment, and she bought "All I Want" on 45. It was pretty cool listening to music on it, nostalgic. I have their rare CD Acoustic Dance Party EP.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Something's Always Wrong
2. I Will Not Take These Things For Granted
3. Good Intentions
4. All I Want
5. Pray Your Gods

Band name origin........ Monty Python!

Newscaster (Eric Idle): Rex Stardust, lead electric triangle with Toad the Wet Sprocket has had to have an elbow removed following their recent successful worldwide tour of Finland. Flamboyant ambidextrous Rex apparently fell off the back of a motorcycle. "Fell off the back of a motorcyclist, most likely," quipped ace drummer Jumbo McCluney upon hearing of the accident. Plans are already afoot for a major tour of Iceland.

Token

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: don't remember

Other: From Salem, Massachusetts (a couple towns over from where I went to high school). Went viral at 17 years old. Killed it on Shade 45 at 19 years old. A good mix of old school talent and modern style with insightful lyrics (not just another shithead babbling on about Gucci, Patrone, Lambos and how every female in the world supposedly wants to fuck him).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Doozy
2. Dirty Flesh
3. Mom Would Agree
4. Flamingo
5. Treehouse

Tom Petty

Genre: rock and roll, southern rock

Discovered: don't remember

Other: Like Smashing Pumpkins, another vocalist where I think "What an odd voice. I don't really like the singing, but for some reason I still like these songs and somehow the voice works well with them."

HIGH FIVE:

1. You Got Lucky
2. Runnin' Down A Dream
3. King's Highway
4. You Wreck Me
5. Don't Come Around Here No More

Tool

Genre: heavy rock, prog metal

Discovered: probably MTV, "Sober"

Other: The first four songs of Undertow are great. The next album is great with a couple exceptions. The next album has a few good songs but gets hoity-toity. Every song is six, eight, ten minutes, no radio edits -- well, technically this attitude started with Aemina's fifth single, sent to radio stations on promos at 8:25, they couldn't trim the first 2 solid minutes of guitar clinking noises??. Anyway they started to lose me on the third album with long meandering (and boring) songs. Fourth album had a few good songs but again, don't make songs longer than they have to be just to show off (don't bore us, get to the chorus). We can see how talented you are in 4 minutes, and those are your best-remembered songs. They don't need to be 11 minutes of wanking. The fifth album (13 years later) was a big pretentious waste of time in my opinion. I never yawned so hard.

Homestar Runner (Strong Bad) did a good parody of Tool videos (and Scandinavian death metal bands) back in 2006 here. "Creeping, rusty, meat."

HIGH FIVE:

1. Prison Sex
2. Sober
3. 46 & 2
4. The Pot
5. Eulogy

The newest Tool album is fantastic. Didn't really hear any singles, but it's one of those that is great as a collective whole.

Here's hoping they don't take another 10 years to release the next one.

I love Tool. I've seen them a couple of times and had tickets for the tour they canceled due to COVID.
Here's hoping they don't take another 10 years to release the next one.
Agreed. Maynard said that they got way too self conscious about it and kept overthinking the whole thing. He said they should have gone with their gut and released it.
I like the album, for the reasons you said. It's good to have on and let play the whole way through. I do miss the songs with the big hook, and hope they get back around to them again. That and touring. They put on a great show.

tori-amos-winter-1992.jpg

Tori Amos

Genre: alt pop, singer-songwriter

Discovered: 2 different girls, "Silent All These Years" then "Winter"

Other: A girl I briefly dated played "Silent All These Years" around me when it came out because she liked it. She quickly revealed that she was a lying, two-timing, heartless bitch on wheels. Anyway, a couple years later, is the story I told in another thread (girl is friend, girl likes Tori, I buy her CD single with b-sides she hadn't heard, girl is thrilled, I tell girl I like her, girl loses total interest in me instantly). But the Tori stuck with me. Little Earthquakes and its b-sides are absolutely amazing. From 1994 - 2001 is "pick-n-choose the good songs". From 2002 on I barely know her stuff.

HIGH FIVE:

1. China
2. Winter
3. Little Earthquakes
4. Precious Things
5. Baker Baker

Totaro

Genre: power pop, rock and roll

Discovered: friend

Other: Went to see a band back in 1991 and my friend took a liking to the opening act, a local band named The Tats (inspired by the expression Tit For Tat). They eventually changed their name to the main guy's last name. They never really made it aside from a somewhat decent following locally here in New England. And I was one of those fans, and I still like them.

HIGH FIVE:

1. When I Met You
2. Growing Up Absurd
3. Furs, Diamonds and Cocaine
4. World Isn't Big Enough
5. Happy Christmas, Happy New Year

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Genre: heavy hohoho

Discovered: already knew Savatage, "Christmas Sarajevo 12/24"

Other: Saw TSO in 2000 in a medium sized venue, they were incredible and the audience was age 10 to 80. So the next year I brought my in-laws and they loved it too. Soon after they were an arena band. Got free tickets to an arena show years later and was bored. And aside from "Wizards In Winter", everything after their second album has been meh.

HIGH FIVE:

1. The Music Box
2. Christmas Sarajevo 12/24 (originally released as a Savatage song)
3. Wizards In Winter
4. Whoville Medley
5. Old City Bar

Trapt-1.jpg

Trapt

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: don't remember, "Headstrong".

Other: Last year, frontman Chris Taylor Brown had a Twitter meltdown, attacking fans and public figures while defending Trump's handling of Covid, defending the term "Chinese Virus", posting racist opinions, defending the Proud Boys, condoning statutory rape, and worst of all, defending Nickelback. The drummer quit over Brown turning the band's Twitter account into a "mega MAGA horn". He even attacked Ice-T's band Body Count, to which Ice replied, "Keep talking. We'll bump into each other one day." However, before all that crap, the band had some good tunes.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Headstrong
2. Still Frame
3. Disconnected (Out Of Touch)
4. Sound Off
5. Drama Queen

Talk about insult to injury!
HIGH FIVE:

1. Headstrong

One of those songs on my most hated list. Instant channel changer (that and Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal cover, or anything Alien Ant Farm for that matter).

Haven't heard the other four because of #1.
