8 top 40s in the 1980s. But I didn't know 2 of them back then.

I don't know how you escaped "The Search Is Over", "High On You" and "I Can't Hold Back" -- but if you don't like cheesy synth-driven 80s pop rock, maybe that's a good thing! The keys in "High On You" are sooo bad: mew-mew mew mew mew mew mew...

Genre: pop folk

Discovered: FM, "Luka"

Other: I may have said all this elsewhere but... Prince handwrote a letter to Vega saying "Luka is the most compelling piece of music I've heard in a long time". "Tom's Diner" has an interesting history, from its original 1984 release on a compilation, to being used to create the MP3 file format, to the bootleg remix that almost led to a lawsuit but cooler heads prevailed and it ended up a top 5 hit in several countries instead. Aside from those two songs, the other three below are from her 2007 album Beauty & Crime.

Other: Solid first album, only a half dozen songs I've liked since.

System Of A Down

Genre: alt metal

Discovered: $2 promo CD

Other: There was a slight buzz about the band in 1999. I used to shop at several new and used CD stores in the 1990s. Nuggets Records was the best (it's still there) and they had a $2 CD section I always pawed through. I found an advance promo CD of the album, read the blurb on the back, and decided to give it a shot - and loved it. Then saw them at Locobazooka '99 in Worcester MA with a bunch of hard & heavy bands just beginning to find success (Staind, Static X, Slipknot...) I still think their first album is their best, despite the success of their second one with their breakthrough hit "Chop Suey", which I thought was a step down.

Discovered: a friend gave me his CD because he wasn't diggin' it

Other: I call them Nirvana's big brother. Nirvana's first European tour was opening for these guys (a fellow Sub Pop band). They were heavier and muddier than most grunge bands. They got sued for using a Polaroid a friend found at a thrift store (of a girl in a bikini with a guy holding one of her breasts) as their album cover. That woman saw the photo of herself in Spin Magazine's review of the album, but had recently become a born-again Christian and was mortified by it.

Steely Dan

Genre: jazzy prog rock

Discovered: my father, the whole Aja album but "Black Cow" stands out as probably the first one I got hooked on.

Other: As covered in other threads, my father used to play this album and I really liked it (and their song "FM") as a kid. Rediscovered the album later in life. Haven't been much of a fan of their other stuff but exposure here is changing that.

Talking Heads

Genre: art pop, alt rock, new wave

Discovered: Probably "Psycho Killer" when I was a wee pup? If not then "Once In A Lifetime" on MTV.

Other: That "same as it ever was" arm thing will forever be burned into my brain. And I know I'm not alone. I love David in This Must Be The Place. He's great in the song "The People Tree" by NASA. And TTC's "Genius Of Love" is a classic.

This one's not a roc doc, it's fiction. But a great movie. Especially if you're a Cure fan. The dry wit is off the charts.

Other: Reportedly the biggest independent rapper in the world. In 2014 he was #16 on Forbes' Hip Hop Cash Kings list. I like him because he is one of the few modern rappers that doesn't do the mumble mouth all-filler-no-substance style of rap. He has old school talent with a modern sound, and diversity in both music and lyrical topics (from fun to serious).

Other: This (one) guy was in a band. When the owner paid them for a gig, he couldn't believe how little 1/5th of the payday was. So he formed a one-man band after inventing his own instrument.
