I have like 3 of his solo albums. He makes good music, but there's only so much of him I can take. He's another artist where I dislike some of his fan base.

I really like his jazz stuff. The really mellow AC stuff doesn’t work for me. The upbeat stuff is good too. I keep his solo stuff separated from the Police stuff so that they don’t fight.

I have never been a fan of his solo stuff. The best of it I am indifferent too. Goes downhill there. Not really sure why. I like most of his Police stuff (aside from Roxanne and King of Pain).

Stone Temple Pilots

Genre: hard rock, grunge

Discovered: MTV, "Sex Type Thing"

Other: I was sleeping over someone's house and randomly woke in the middle of the night to the video for "Sex Type Thing". I made a mental note to look into them the next day. A few months later, they were huge. Aside from a few songs, I dislike everything they did after their debut album Core. I hated "Vaseline" and hated "Big Bang Baby" even more.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Sex Type Thing
2. Crackerman
3. Wicked Garden
4. Dead And Bloated
5. Unglued

Stuck Mojo

Genre: rap metal

Discovered: sampler, "2 Minutes Of Death"

Other: These guys formed in 1989, three years before Rage. They were originally inspired by Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Follow For Now (a fellow Atlanta funk-rock band similar to Living Color). So they were groundbreakers, just not as well known or acknowledged.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Crooked Figurehead
2. Assassination Of A Pop Star
3. Throw The Switch
4. Mental Meltdown
5. Hate Breed

There are bunch of bands I only know because of the cheap Century Media (label) compilations I bought in the 90s. Most of them remained obscure, known only in the underground metal world. The band featured on them that got the biggest I would say is probably Lacuna Coil.

Sugar Ray

Genre: rap metal/party rock (first album), rap rock/party rock (second album), pop rock (third album onward)

Discovered: sampler (same one I discovered CIV and Smile from), "Rhyme Stealer"

Other: "Now it-*wick*-now-*wick*-Now it's time for gui-gui-gui-guitar center stage..." Their first album was a lot of fun. Rap-metal similar to Beastie Boys Licensed To Ill. Their second album was weaker, I didn't get into it very much.... but it had the huge hit "Fly" (which I liked, but it felt like when Red Hot Chili Peppers went from "Fight Like A Brave" to "Under The Bridge" -- both good, but quite a big shift). After that second album, they were a different band entirely.

HIGH FIVE:

1. 10 Seconds Down
2. Rhyme Stealer
3. Streaker
4. Fly
5. Mean Machine

suicidal+tendencies+how+will+i+laugh+tomorrow.jpg

Suicidal Tendencies

Genre: metal, heavy rock, punk metal

Discovered: MTV Headbangers Ball, "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow"

Other: Their most popular era was 1989 - 1993 (#1 and #5 and "I'll Hate You Better" got decent radio play on rock radio (usually at night). But they will forever be known best for their first single "Institutionalized". "All I wanted was a Pepsi! And she wouldn't give it to me! Just one Pepsi!" I prefer the re-recorded version of that song from 1993 though because it's more metal, less garage/punk.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Send Me Your Money
2. Institutionalized (1993 Version)
3. How Will I Laugh Tomorrow
4. Go N Breakdown
5. Nobody Hears

Those guys were a lot of fun!
I think I discovered them on the Repo Man soundtrack, which is great.
I need to dig that one out. It’s been a while.

Survivor-band-1280x720.jpg

Survivor

Genre: rock, pop rock

Discovered: FM I assume, "Eye Of The Tiger"

Other: "Tiger" is a rock classic, but I don't get into anything else from the Bickler years. The Jamison years are a bit cheesy, but eh good enough to give the band a high five.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Eye Of The Tiger
2. High On You
3. Burning Heart
4. The Moment Of Truth
5. I Can't Hold Back

Agreed. I think both singers had good singing voices though.

Soon after "Tiger", Bickler had to have throat surgery. From what I gather, when it didn't heal fast enough they pushed him out of the band. That sucks. From #1 to number-none

Main member Jim Peterik has written a few hits for others like "Caught Up In You" and "Hold On Loosely" for 38 Special and "Vehicle" for Ides Of March.
