Primus

Genre: alt rock, experimental hard rock

Discovered: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack

Other: Released in 1991, the BATBJ soundtrack is one of the landmark releases that clearly shows the shift happening at the time from 80s hard rock to 90s heavy alternative. It starts with Winger, Kiss and Slaughter on side one, then has Faith No More, King's X and Primus on side two, encapsulating the transition from one style to the other.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Tommy The Cat (with Tom Waits)
2. Jerry Was A Race Car Driver
3. My Name Is Mud
4. Wynona's Big Brown Beaver
5. DMV

LOVE Primus!
Les is a monster, and so much fun to watch play live. I've gotten to see them a couple of times. One of my college roommates got me into them.

There isn't much to say about him that Eric Clapton didn't already say.

When asked what it was like to be the best guitar player that there ever was, Clapton replied, "I don't know, ask Prince."

(Or something to that effect. If the quote is slightly off, I don't want Scotch feeling like he needs to correct me.)

It speaks volumes that they had the medley of 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' with all the greats, and had Prince play the lead. A guitar god if there ever was one!

You're confusing me with Cliff Clavin.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Breathe
2. Smack My Bitch Up
3. Diesel Power
4. Firestarter
5. Nasty

Prong

Genre: heavy rock, radio metal, metal

Discovered: it was either MTV or a friend, I forget which happened first but it was the combination of the two that got me into them, "Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck"

Other: They built a following on tight riffs and snappy/thrashy beats, then got big on groove metal, then went alt metal and fell out of favor, now they bounce between those three styles. My top 4 are from their biggest album Cleansing.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck
2. Broken Peace
3. Cut Rate
4. Whose Fist Is This Anyway
5. Beg To Differ

Prophets Of Rage

Genre: rap metal

Discovered: already knew Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill

Other: Same idea as Audioslave -- Rage without Zack, instead fronted by Chuck D (of Public Enemy) and B-Real (of Cypress Hill). When Ticketmaster had to settle a lawsuit by giving away a bunch of credits for free tickets in 2016, I scored two tickets to see these guys with Awolnation.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Prophets Of Rage
2. Who Owns Who
3. Strength In Numbers
4. Unfuck The World
5. Hail To The Thief

Dig. I'd like to see them. I was hoping to see Rage when they were on tour last time, but it didn't work out. I did get to see Morello play a few songs with Springsteen a couple of years ago. It was cool, but not the same as the full tilt funk-bomb.

I'd like to see them.
They called it quits. But you never know, they could reunite.

After three years of fury, anger and rock, Prophets of Rage are calling it a day.

The politically-charged supergroup, comprising Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk, Cypress Hill MC B Real and Public Enemy's Chuck D and DJ Lord, emerged in early 2016 as a RATM side-project.

Now, with Rage poised to reunite in 2020, Chuck D says Prophets of Rage has run its course.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Girl Directions
2. Number (I Can Only Count To Four)
3. Shower
4. P Is The Best Letter
5. Beer

Hendrix regarded Chicago's Terry Kath as the best.
He’s really underrated. He gets (got) respect from a lot of really great guitar players.
Love those guys. I would have loved to have seen them. It’s a band I have to listen to loud.
I don't hear much from them. It seems like they should get a bit more airplay.
They called it quits. But you never know, they could reunite.
With Morello, anything can happen. I think he’s having a great time now just doing what he feels like doing.

It seems like they should get a bit more airplay.
Prong is one of those groups that got airplay in the mid-90s on active rock stations after peak hours. I'd hear them at 9pm on WAAF, but not 10am. Disturbed and RATM started out the same way, but broke big and got elevated to prime time airplay. Prong never broke big. But aside from a couple tracks near the end, Cleansing is a banger!
