Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

Rammstein

Genre: metal, industrial/dance metal, NDH

Discovered: thanks to Trent Reznor who put them on the Lost Highway soundtrack, "Herzeleid"

Other: Their lyrics are often vile. But hey, most of it's in German so I don't always know what they're singing about anyway. Their stage shows are vile too, but I know not to go see them live.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Engel
2. Du Hast
3. Stripped (Heavy Metal Mix / Depeche Mode cover)
4. Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen
5. Du Riechst So Gut

I love to see those guys live. The little bits of their shows that I've seen on-line were crazy.
Engel is a pretty cool tune!
I think much of the covers album, but their cover of 'How I could just kill a man' is a banger!
Hell yes it is. It's Bangers and mash!

Ra

Genre: hard rock, rock

Discovered: FM I think, "Do You Call My Name"

Other: Somewhere I else I think I may have told this story? When my metal band Hostile Witness dropped the ball on pre-selling tickets to open for MOD, I told the club owner that my other band A Simple Complex would take up the slack if they could open instead. He said, "Only if you'll also open for Ra two months later". Uh, hell the eff yeah. No brainer. So Ra is the second national touring act I ever opened for. Also on the bill that night.... a pre-fame Halestorm. BTW the first riff that kicks in on #1 below is awesome.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Do You Call My Name
2. Rectifier
3. Fallen Rock Zone
4. Supermegadubstep
5. Sky

I finally got to listen to this one. Not too shabby. I like the variety and space that they fill. The song breathes and has some personality. I like the title of supermegadubstep. I’ll have to look that one up just for the title alone.

I think much of the covers album, but their cover of 'How I could just kill a man' is a banger!
I like the opening two tracks "Pistol Grip Pump" and "Microphone Fiend". I didn't like "Renegades" at first but it grew on me. And yeah "How I Could Just" is probably the only other song on there I like.

I know someone who saw them when he was in high school and said he was scarred for life from it. It might have been the show where they got arrested for simulating butt sex on stage. Till Lindemann has a fake wiener that shoots like a power washer. Not my scene.

Rancid

Genre: punk, punk rock

Discovered: FM? "Time Bomb"

Other: Again, not a fan of punk but when a punk band makes rock music I can dig it. The songs below are rock radio songs with punk influence, not pure punk (actually #2 is more ska than punk or rock).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Ruby Soho
2. Time Bomb
3. Roots Radical
4. Bloodclot
5. Collision Course

Rat Boy

Genre: indie rock, rap rock

Discovered: don't remember, "Wasteman"

Other: The bastard child of The Clash and The Beastie Boys (Check Your Head / Ill Communication).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Move
2. Revolution
3. Wasteman
4. Internationally Unknown
5. Kicked Outta School

Ratt

Genre: hair metal, hard rock

Discovered: MTV "Round And Round"

Other: Despite sounding very 80s, most of their music still holds up and aged surprisingly well. Cellar (84), Privacy (85) and Reach (88) are great. Dancing (86) sucked. Interesting that Motley Crue ran the same pattern for me: Devil (83), Pain (85) and Feelgood (89) are great, Girls (87) sucked.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Round And Round
2. I Want A Woman
3. In Your Direction
4. Never Use Love
5. Lovin' You's A Dirty Job

I liked some of their stuff when they came out.

10 or 12 years ago, Ratt played a concert in town for some festival or something and the radio station was looking for volunteers for stuff so my buddy volunteered, got tickets and some other stuff. He wound up picking Ratt up from the airport and driving them to the venue and hotel after the show. Stephen Pearcy and (I think) the bass player were flaming assholes and acted like they were still huge and in their prime. The guitar player was pretty chill and conversational. He was asking what good restaurants there were and was asking about the last place they played when they were in town several year before.

I think the only original members left in the touring version of Ratt right now are Stephen (vox) and Juan (bass). That's too bad they were pricks. Stephen has a long history of being an asshole to his fellow band members (in Ratt and other projects like Arcade, Vicious Delite & Vertex) and Ratt has been getting slagged for crap performances since 1990. A few years ago, Stephen mixed meds and booze and got railed by fans.

That's too bad. It sucks when a musician that is big and actually good acts like that, it's even worse when people barely care about them anymore.
These guys should be thankful that anybody wants to see them at all. They are crazy lucky to still be able to make a living playing music, and should be appreciative and going out of their way to make sure their fans get a good show.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Genre: funk rock, alt rock

Discovered: MTV Hard 30 hosted by Steven Tyler, "Fight Like A Brave"

Other: Absolutely loved Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987 but I didn't hear it until summer '89) and Mother's Milk (1989). These albums turned my musical world upside down. I was disappointed with Blood Sugar Sex Magick at first but it grew on me. I've only liked a handful of their stuff since.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Fight Live A Brave
2. Knock Me Down
3. Higher Ground
4. Show Me Your Soul
5. Backwoods

HIGH FIVE:

1. Holy Shit It's Christmas

Reel Big Fish

Genre: ska

Discovered: CMJ, "Everything Sucks"

Other: Loved their first (not-indie) album, then their next six only had a handful of songs I liked. But their two most recent albums are great! I saw them in 2016, great show.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Sell Out
2. I Know You Too Well
3. She Has A Girlfriend Now
4. Everyone Else Is An Asshole
5. Life Sucks Let's Dance

I saw them in 2013 with White Panda at festival at University of Toledo.
They put on a good show. I can't believe it was that long ago. Damn.

Relative Ash

Genre: nu metal

Discovered: I think they were supposed to be on Ozzfest 2000 so I looked them up, but they didn't end on it? Not sure.

Other: A guy who sang in one of my bands said "I want to give this singer a baby bottle". My wife agreed. I don't care. I think it's very intense and makes me wanna to mosh with serial killers. I mean, say he's whining if you want but the effin' dude lost his dad to AIDS.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Breathe
2. Bounce
3. Pout
4. Sperm
5. Hymen

REM

Genre: college rock, alt pop

Discovered: FM, "It's The End Of The World". I hated it.

Other: One of those bands where each album (1987 - 1998) has two or or four or six songs I like, and the rest do nothing for me. But the songs that I like, I like a lot.

1. Losing My Religion
2. Nightswimming
3. Pop Song '89
4. Drive
5. At My Most Beautiful

Saw them on the Monster tour. After Bill Berry's aneurysm. Fantastic show.

The Song Exploder with Losing My Religion is pretty good.
It's fascinating listening to parts broken out by themselves and hearling the artist talk about how the song came together.

Replacements

Genre: college rock, alt rock, power pop

Discovered: MTV "I'll Be You"

Other: Then there was that time they got s-faced with Tom Waits and recorded a song on the fly.

HIGH FIVE:

1. I'll Be You
2. Alex Chilton
3. Within Your Reach
4. Can't Hardly Wait
5. Sadly Beautiful
