Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

Public-Enemy-Gear-Rundown.jpg

Public Enemy

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: MTV, "911 Is A Joke"

Other: Got into "911" when it came out in 1990. Then "He Got Game" in 1998. Didn't get into them beyond those two songs until the 2000s.

HIGH FIVE:

1. 911 Is A Joke
2. Bring The Noise
3. Black Is Back
4. He Got Game
5. Fight The Power

Queen

Genre: arena rock, theatrical rock

Other: Got into "911" when it came out in 1990. Then "He Got Game" in 1998. Didn't get into them beyond those two songs until the 2000s.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Under Pressure
2. Bohemian Rhapsody
3. Who Wants To Live Forever
4. We Will Rock You
5. We Are The Champions

I didn’t realize Queen was so gangster.

They have a lot of other good tracks too. Hammer to Fall, Tie Your Mother Down, Radio Ga Ga are great.

I always get annoyed at ballgames when they play We Will Rock You, and cut it off just before the guitar solo.

Your choice @ #1 surprises me. I am also surprised base upon previous discussions that I don't see "Headlong" or "Radio Ga Ga" on your list. And "We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions" are effectively one song.

Aw crud! Let me fix 'gangster Queen'

Queen

Genre: arena rock, theatrical rock

Discovered: probably my friend who had the album News Of The World

Other: Freddie is, IMO, the best rock singer of all time. Another group that can make an amazing song, and then make a song I can't stand (Body Language is a good example of that).

Your choice @ #1 surprises me
While I do wish it had less ee-oh-ba-boh and be-ba-boh-dah-doh in it, it still moves me the most musically and lyrically.
I am also surprised base upon previous discussions that I don't see "Headlong" or "Radio Ga Ga" on your list.
It's tough because Queen has so many great songs.
And "We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions" are effectively one song.
I've always viewed them as separate entities, despite how well they flow into one another.

On the fly...
6. Another One Bites The Dust
7. Hammer to Fall
8. Headlong
9. One Vision
10. I Want It All
11. Radio Ga Ga
12. Flash
13. One Year of Love
14. You're My Best Friend
15. Somebody To Love
16. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
17. Play the Game
18. Bicycle Race
19. Fat Bottomed Girls (despite how odd of a topic it is to sing about)
20. Killer Queen

1. Under Pressure
2. Bohemian Rhapsody
3. Who Wants To Live Forever
4. We Will Rock You
5. We Are The Champions

You're still missing two of the best: Keep Yourself Alive and Tie Your Mother Down.

Queensryche.jpg

Queensryche

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: MTV, "Eyes Of A Stranger"

Other: Only into a handful of tracks from their two biggest albums and their cover of PF's "Welcome To The Machine". Not a fan of Geoff Tate due to the footage I've seen of him insulting the audience.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Eyes Of A Stranger
2. Silent Lucidity
3. Another Rainy Night
4. Jet City Woman
5. I Don't Believe In Love

I didn't know a lot about them other than a song or two before I saw them open for Def Leppard back in the day. They sounded incredible live. I picked up a couple of their disks after.

I liked the big themed story albums. They were like a loud heavier version of Floyd.

It sounds like Tate has troubles with the bottle that turn him into a raging dick. Too bad. He had a great voice.

QUICKSAND-BAND.jpg

Quicksand

Genre: heavy rock/pre-nu-metal (according to me), post-hardcore (according to Wikipedia)

Discovered: sampler CD McGathy Metal

Other: They only released two albums in the 90s but I take HUGE inspiration from these guys in my writing. They reunited so I got to see them live in 2013, but their newer music is just pretty good. #2 below is the song they're most known for.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Fazer
2. Thorn In My Side
3. Backward
4. Divorce
5. Landmine Spring

Quiet Riot

Genre: hair metal, heavy rock

Discovered: MTV, "Cum On Feel The Noize"

Other: Metal Health is still one of my fav albums of all ever (in my top 30 I'd assume). I was one of the sixteen people that bought Condition Critical. I did like a few songs but yeah it was a big step down.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Cum On Feel The Noize
2. Metal Health
3. Don't Wanna Let You Go
4. Love's A Bitch
5. The Wild And The Young

Ra.jpg

Ra

Genre: hard rock, rock

Discovered: FM I think, "Do You Call My Name"

Other: Somewhere I else I think I may have told this story? When my metal band Hostile Witness dropped the ball on pre-selling tickets to open for MOD, I told the club owner that my other band A Simple Complex would take up the slack if they could open instead. He said, "Only if you'll also open for Ra two months later". Uh, hell the eff yeah. No brainer. So Ra is the second national touring act I ever opened for. Also on the bill that night.... a pre-fame Halestorm. BTW the first riff that kicks in on #1 below is awesome.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Do You Call My Name
2. Rectifier
3. Fallen Rock Zone
4. Supermegadubstep
5. Sky

R.A.%20the%20Rugged%20Man-892767.jpg

RA The Rugged Man

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: don't remember, but it was "Shoot Me In The Head"

Other: He was born in 1974, but (as far as I know) his rap career didn't really take off until 2013, when he was almost 40. He has a modern sound but an old school vibe and flow. And he raps about things people born in the 70s can relate to. He's also offensive in an Eminem kind of way.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Shoot Me In The Head
2. Legendary Loser
3. Montero (Lil Nas X Remixed)
4. Gotta Be Dope (with Jazzy Jeff)
5. Holla-Loo-Yuh (with Tech N9ne)

Radiohead

Genre: alt rock (earlier stuff), alternative (later stuff)

Discovered: friend, "Creep"

Other: I said it elsewhere, but I think their first album is pretty good and their second is real good. But they lost me on their 3rd album and haven't done anything since that I like.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Creep
2. Street Spirit
3. Fake Plastic Trees
4. High And Dry
5. Stop Whispering (US version)

Rage Against The Machine

Genre: rap metal, alt rock

Discovered: WBCN FM, "Know Your Enemy"

Other: I've already talked about my early experiences with RATM elsewhere a few times. First album KILLER!. Second album I was disappointed, but there's a handful of great tracks (there's four songs on there I don't even recognize by name, "Down Rodeo" is awful, "Vietnow" is plagiarism, and "Bulls On Parade" may be a popular but I think it's mediocre). Third album is really good (but nowhere near their debut). Fourth album of covers was weak.

All tracks below are from their debut but notice "Killing In The Name" isn't one of them. Great song, sure, but I was listening to the whole album for a while before people really knew of this band, and I never saw "Killing" as a standout track, then or now -- it's in the bottom five of that album. I was really surprised when people caught on to the group that they gravitated to "Killing" and "Bulls".

HIGH FIVE:

1. Know Your Enemy
2. Freedom
3. Wake Up
4. Take The Power Back
5. Bombtrack

Rammstein

Genre: metal, industrial/dance metal, NDH

Discovered: thanks to Trent Reznor who put them on the Lost Highway soundtrack, "Herzeleid"

Other: Their lyrics are often vile. But hey, most of it's in German so I don't always know what they're singing about anyway. Their stage shows are vile too, but I know not to go see them live.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Engel
2. Du Hast
3. Stripped (Heavy Metal Mix / Depeche Mode cover)
4. Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen
5. Du Riechst So Gut

I think much of the covers album, but their cover of 'How I could just kill a man' is a banger!
