Powerman 5000

Genre: nu metal, industrial rock

Discovered: probably FM, "When Worlds Collide"

Other: They peaked with their album Tonight The Stars Revolt (#1, #2, #4 below). They were about to release their next album, the first single was already out to radio, then they pulled it. And they haven't recovered since. #3 and #5 are from that pulled album (which eventually came out, I think several years later).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Nobody's Real
2. Automatic
3. Bombshell
4. Blast Of To Nowhere
5. Danger Is Go

Pretenders

Genre: rock and roll

Discovered: don't remember (MTV? FM?), but it was "Brass In Pocket"

Other: I like them now more than I did in the 80s. Back then it was eh whatever okay I guess. Now I'll go out of my way to listen to them once in a while. #4 is a very recent song. If you haven't read the back of the promo CD for "Night In My Veins", you should!

HIGH FIVE:

1. I'll Stand By You
2. Back On The Chain Gang
3. Middle Of The Road
4. Holy Commotion
5. Brass In Pocket

I'll Stand By You was a stepdaughter graduation song, always makes Mrs Scotch cry.

If I listed my top 500 Pretenders songs, Brass In Pocket would be 501.

I have listed my top 10 before and "Brass In Pocket" was #2.

I do not recognize "I'll Stand By You". I have the CD somewhere. That song is not digitized from it.

I also don't recognize "Holy Commotion".

I'll Stand By You was 1994, Holy Commotion was just a few years ago.

Other than being the song that introduced The Pretenders, I don't see any merit to Brass In Pocket. Of course, I covered them a while back, you can see my list of favorites.

I think Wikipedia actually has the story right. Love it when that happens.

The album was originally slated as the follow-up to 1999's Tonight the Stars Revolt!. It was pulled by Powerman 5000 frontman Spider One two weeks before the release date. Due to being too similar to previous work, the album was originally intended to merely be delayed and revamped. However, during this time conflicts began to arise causing longtime members Dorian 27 (Dorian Heartsong) and Al3 (Allen Pahanish) to leave the band. As a result, the album was scrapped due to Spider's unwillingness to release an album of half new members and half old.

Fun fact: Spider One (Mike Cummings) is Rob Zombie's brother (Rob Cummings)

Here is P5K's most well-known song (not in my top 5):

Pretty Reckless

Genre: hard rock, radio metal

Discovered: don't remember

Other: Cindy-Lou Who is all growed up!! Yep, this is the girl who played Cindy-Lou in the Jim Carrey Grinch film. Not only does she rawk. But she plays the controversy card hard, Madonna-style. Headlines be like:

Taylor Momsen strips naked in provocative video for single Heaven Knows

Taylor Momsen, 17, bares her breasts during The Pretty Reckless performance at Download Festival

Taylor Momsen puts on raunchy show: Singer grinds on shirtless female fan, gets groped onstage

HIGH FIVE:

1. Death By Rock And Roll
2. Heaven Knows
3. Make Me Wanna Die
4. And So It Went
5. Going To Hell

Primer 55

Genre: rap metal, radio metal

Discovered: Ozzfest

Other: I went to Ozzfest '00, and researched any band I didn't already know before going. These guys were one of them. I downloaded a couple songs from each band from Napster, burnt a CD and listened in my car for a couple months so I'd know their music and know who to see (and not bother seeing). Other bands I had to research: Slaves On Dope, Deadlights, Shuvel, Apartment 26, Crazy Town (the latter got kicked off the tour before making it to my stop). I did the same the next year for '01.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Loose
2. The Big Fuck You
3. Side To Side
4. G's
5. This Life
