Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

Phil Collins

Genre: pop, pop rock

Discovered: knew him from Genesis

Other: I thought it was a great idea to re-create the album covers as they were reissued with a current photo. I'm also just learning something about him that I'll post in the music news thread.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Take Me Home
2. I Don't Care Anymore
3. In The Air Tonight
4. Something Happened On The Way To Heaven
5. Easy Lover

Phil has been an aquired taste. Never liked him in the 80s but over time I have come to tolerate most of his music and like several of his songs. This includes him and his Genesis stuff.

I was good with Phil and Genesis up till all of the Disney formula stuff.

In other Phil news, he’s back on tour with Genesis this fall. I guess he needed some extra cash for the divorce.

In the 80s/early 90s, with both Phil and Genesis, there was a small handful of songs I liked, a few I was lukewarm to, and the rest I didn't care for.

After the 90s, like IRBS, I started warming up to both of them more. My latest kick is late 70s/early 80s Genesis. For a few years now I've been really digging "Abacab", "Paperlate", "Turn It On Again", "Illegal Alien" (so not PC!) and "Just A Job I Do". My son too!

Pink Floyd

Genre: art rock, prog rock

Discovered: my cousin I think

Other: I love The Wall as a whole, but rarely listen to the songs individually. Into maybe 8 or 10 songs outside of that album. Don't get why Dark Side Of The Moon is such a big deal. I do, however, have the original 7" of two songs from the film The Wall that aren't on the album ("When The Tigers Broke Free"/"Bring The Boys Back Home").

HIGH FIVE:

1. Mother
2. Run Like Hell
3. Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)
4. Nobody Home
5. On The Turning Away

Don't get why Dark Side Of The Moon is such a big deal.
Maybe for the same reason the The White Album or Abbey Road is a big deal. I know you don't have to be a fan to appreciate the high regard it's gotten.

While I appreciate the artistic accomplishment of The Wall, I've only sat through it once, and the only song that has lasting value to me is Comfortably Numb. But I'm aware it's a favorite album of many (some here).

Weighing in, did you hear "The Wall" prior to "Dark Side of the Moon"? I think this may discount the appreciation for the album as it is quite different. I too prefer "The Wall" but the album (any Floyd album) is a masterpiece in its own right.

It also I believe stayed on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart longer than any other album.

Weed......
Never been high. Never listened to Dark Side from start to finish. I do get the idea that one helps the other.

Yes, I've never heard Dark Side all the way through.

I know for sure I've heard Money, Time and Us & Them, and I think they're okay. But I'd say the same about songs individually from The Wall. I know I've heard most or all of the other songs from DSOTM (at least pieces of them), but nothing's made me think I'd enjoy the album start to finish. Maybe someday I'll try it.

Maybe for the same reason the The White Album or Abbey Road is a big deal. I know you don't have to be a fan to appreciate the high regard it's gotten.
I don't understand the first sentence, what's that reason? Those Beatles albums are genius, even if I only like some of the songs from each I understand their impact on pop/rock music.

And yes, I definitely do respect the impact DSOTM has made (minus anyone who ended up hooked on drugs because of it...?)

People put Dark Side in the same "genius" category, plus I was making the correlation that both albums (Floyd and Beatles) contain psychedelic stoner music. The other reason I bring it up is because some people - like IRBS - think those great Beatles albums are just OK, nothing special. So the point is that many legendary albums don't blow away everyone who hears them, and that's OK.

I’ve heard both and the Wall is my favorite. Another one thanks to my sisters who had The Wall on vinyl, but not Dark Side for some reason.

Pitchshifter

Genre: electronic rock/metal

Discovered: CMJ, "Genius"

Other: I discovered them on their fourth album when they moved away from a more underground gothic industrial metal sound to a more drum-n-bass upbeat electronic rock/metal sound. I went to see them when they and Quicksand opened for Deftones in Maine back in 1998, incredible show. Their fifth and sixth albums are great, but their fourth is still their best.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Microwaved
2. Genius
3. What's In It For Me
4. I Don't Like It
5. Hidden Agenda

PM Dawn

Genre: art-pop hip-hop be-bop barber-shop. j/k, just art-pop hip-hop.

Discovered: FM? "Set Adrift"

Other: Don't think I'm alone when I say their first two albums were good, then it was a sharp drop-off into obscurity.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Set Adrift On Memory Bliss
2. I'd Die Without You
3. Looking Through Patient Eyes
4. On A Clear Day
5. The Ways Of The Wind

4. School Of Hard Knocks
5. Youth Of The Nation
