Sir Mix-A-Lot

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: I think I heard one of his songs from an album prior to "Baby Got Back", but don't remember which one.

Other: My then-girlfriend owned the album with "Baby Got Back" on it, and said the rest was good too. I borrowed it and the first ten songs (and one non-LP b-side to "Baby Got Back") are good. Not into much of his other stuff.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Baby Got Back
2. Cake Boy (b-side to "Baby Got Back")
3. One Time's Got No Case
4. Sprung On The Cat
5. A Rapper's Reputation

Sisters Of Mercy

Genre: new wave, goth rock

Discovered: a friend

Other: Not a big fan, but these five are good. I prefer the 4 minute version of "More" to the 8 minute version. Is it in Jim's contract that songs have to be 8 minutes long? Below is the 4 minute version.

HIGH FIVE:

1. More (co-written by Jim Steinman)
2. You Could Be The One (b-side)
3. I Was Wrong
4. Alice (1993)
5. Under The Gun

Dave_Sabo_Sebastian_Bach_Skid_Row_Nov_12_2017_1.jpg

Skid Row

Genre: hard rock, hair rock

Discovered: MTV, "Youth Gone Wild"

Other: In 1990, I was standing in line at a grocery checkout with a friend. I was telling him that a few weeks ago Sebastian Bach was mad at a guy in the crowd at their show, so he grabbed a bottle and threw it at the guy.... and missed. Instead it hit a random girl who was standing near him. A tall good-looking blonde in front of me in line randomly turned around and said, "She probably deserved it." And that's when the awkward silence happened.

Nearly twenty years ago, at a concert at the Civic Center, Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach had something thrown at his head -- either a cup, according to the prosecution, or a glass bottle, according to Bach. Bach singled out someone in the audience, someone referred to only as "c***s#ck!!!!!!r" in the video above, presumably a male, and winged what an assistant D.A. described as a "juice bottle" back into the crowd.

But the bottle hit a 17-year-old girl, Elizabeth Meyers, and broke her nose. Then, Bach jumped feet-first into the crowd of 9,150, kicking a 21-year-old man in the face. Bach was arrested that night. He'd told a reporter Skid Row was banned from Springfield. If only such a decree were on paper somewhere in City Hall files.

When Bach appeared at the Hampden County Superior Court, fans lined up to get a glimpse, just to say: "You're awesome, man." On a plea-bargaining agreement, the three charges against Bach -- two counts of assault and battery and one count of mayhem carrying a combined 2 1/2-year jail sentence -- were dropped, and the sentence was suspended.

From a Jan 9., 1990 letter to the editor in The Republican: "These performers are at a disadvantage with the lights shining in their faces; they cannot see projectiles coming toward them [...] I am quite certain that Bach was planning to hit his attacker and not the young girl who was injured."

Bon Jovi Proteges Hope Metal Magic Will Rub Off

February 9, 1989|By DEBORAH WILKER, Music Writer

`Every day is Christmas,`` says Dave ``The Snake`` Sabo. He should know. His struggling band, Skid Row, just landed one of the most cherished deals in all of rock `n` roll.

The young recording artists have won the choice opening slot on Bon Jovi`s extended world tour, which began in Dallas two weeks ago and arrives at the Miami Arena tonight.

Though the selection of Skid Row for the tour was not exactly a surprise (Sabo and Jon Bon Jovi were high school friends, and Sabo played briefly in an early incarnation of Bon Jovi), Sabo says he literally turned cartwheels when the deal was finalized.

``Who knows what our situation would have been if Bon Jovi didn`t feel confident enough to take us out? There are tons of great bands dying to get on tour. Who`s to say that we deserved it over all the others?`` Based on Bon Jovi`s endorsement, Skid Row also has a fat deal with Atlantic Records and a first video in the treasured ``breakout`` rotation on MTV.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Youth Gone Wild
2. 18 & Life
3. I Remember You
4. Monkey Business
5. Piece Of Me

I think I've seen Skid play 2 or 3 times.
The first may have been that tour with Bon Jovi in the 80's. I saw them open for G n R a few years later too.
The times I saw them, they sounded good, but I've heard they can sound pretty bad too.

Skrape

Genre: heavy rock, radio metal

Discovered: don't remember

Other: After touring with Pantera and Slayer, and selling over 100K copies of their debut, their A&R man got fired and these guys got dropped three days later (just after their second album came out). Drummer Will Hunt (later playing with Evanescence, Black Label Society, Device, Staind and Static X) had this to say:

"I'd like to throw out a big, BIG fuck you to the fucking cowards at J (for joke) Records for taking over RCA and not allowing them to promote our band correctly (J Records wouldn't release any funds to do the job right). I'd like to also say to [J Records head honcho] Clive Davis that I've got a nice big hot bowl of dicks for you to eat on when you've got the time. I'd like to thank you personally for killing rock and roll and watering down the music industry with pop trappings and watered-down retro rock by knocking your teeth into the back of your fucking throat ... I personally am working on a blistering new project that's gonna bitch-slap Clive Davis to fucking Mars! .... So people get ready, there's a train 'a comin', and its called Rock n Roll, and it's gonna roll right the fuck over Clive Davis and his watered-down girl rock and pop!"

HIGH FIVE:

1. Waste
2. What You Say
3. Isolated
4. Rake
5. Up The Dose
