Run DMC

Genre: hip hop, rap rock

Discovered: MTV, "King Of Rock"

Other: I remember seeing the "King Of Rock" video on MTV (with Bud Melman) and even though I didn't get into it right then, I was intrigued and knew they were on to something.

HIGH FIVE:

1. King Of Rock
2. It's Tricky
3. Walk This Way (with Aerosmith)
4. Hit It Run
5. Beats To The Rhyme

Rush

Genre: prog rock, hard rock

Discovered: A friend, then MTV "Distant Early Warning" a couple years later

Other: When I was 11 or 12 a friend of mine played Moving Pictures for me, but I didn't like it (over time I grew to like "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" though). My fav Rush album is Hold Your Fire, which I think a lot of purists tend to sneer at (because it's so synth heavy) - but I love its lyrics and it still rocks behind those synths. I like their 1985-1996 stuff, not into much from their 1970s material.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Time Stand Still
2. Nobody's Hero
3. Show Don't Tell
4. The Big Money
5. Tom Sawyer

I suppose my take on these guys doesn't really need to be elaborated again.
1. Time Stand Still
There's your Aimee Mann again.

Lifeson has been starting to work on new material again, and there was some chatter about him getting together with Geddy again too.

He just did an interview the other day with Sweetwater that I still have to watch. He talks about new music.

Savatage

Genre: hair metal, prog rock, hard rock, rock opera

Discovered: sampler CD, McGathy Metal "Edge Of Thorns"

Other: Not into their 80s stuff very much (typical 80s metal headbanger stuff a la Iron Maiden, etc). But I really dig their 90s stuff. Of course, their 1995 song "Christmas Eve 12/24 Sarajevo" would kick off the side project Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Edge Of Thorns
2. Christams Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)
3. A Little Too Far
4. One Child
5. All That I Bleed

They put on a pretty good (Xmas) show. I've never seen the Savatage rock show though.
There are stories about the Trans-Siberian show being pre-recorded.

I saw TSO back in 2000 and 2001 at venue in Boston with a 2,700 person capacity. No pre-recording there, raw excellent performances.

In 2000, it was pretty much all of the original performers. In 2001, they had a west group and an east group (you can't tour Christmas all year, and there was money to be had). So some of the songs were performed by people who weren't on the original recording (and some were).

I saw TSO again years later in a huge venue (got free tix). Didn't even stay 'til the end. It was the typical big venue bullshit. Fire and flashing lights and all that garbage. Waste of time, shouldn't have left the house.

I saw em in 2009 & 2017. (The Mrs. likes to go to Christmas shows.)
It was the full on light, laser, and smoke extravaganza. It was fun and helped keep old holiday stuff interesting.
The band was so tight sounding, I couldn't help to wonder if the theatrics were a distraction to cover up backing tracks.

Scorpions

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: probably MTV "Rock You Like A Hurricane", if I heard them earlier than that I don't remember it.

Other: Still can't believe they released an album titled Virgin Killer with a completely naked child on the cover. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

HIGH FIVE:

1. Humanity
2. Rock You Like A Hurricane
3. Tease Me Please Me
4. Rhythm Of Love
5. Alien Nation

Seether

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: probably FM

Other: Opened for them with Puddle Of Mudd (that guy's a friggin' DOUCHE), Black Stone Cherry and Buck Cherry. We were on the second stage. I went out into the crowd and stood on the picnic tables and followed people around with my guitar while playing our set. The venue took a photo of me scrubbing my guitar strings along the edge of a picnic table (below). They had it up on their website back in the day. Anyway, enough re-living my good ol' days, Seether is pretty good. Oh, and I think they must have hacked into my computer and stole a song I was working on. Those bastards!

HIGH FIVE:

1. Gasoline
2. Because Of Me
3. Let You Down
4. Remedy
5. Dangerous

They have a cool sound.
Other: Opened for them with Puddle Of Mudd (that guy's a friggin' DOUCHE),
I've heard that a few different times. That's too bad. Puddle of Biscuit was a flash in the pan.

That's pretty cool. It would be fun doing a gig like that. The reactions on the people's faces at the table are great. The guy is fully amused and like, "Hey, he's RIGHT here at our table!" and she's like "Hey! He's right here. At. Our. Table!"
Oh, and I think they must have hacked into my computer and stole a song I was working on. Those bastards!
Ha! You were pretty far into it too. My bass player had a hook that he came up with that he was all excited about and was playing for several weeks. Then a month or so later Jack White released Lazaretto.
