Sevendust

Genre: radio metal

Discovered: I think I first heard them on this cassampler, which also got me into Geezer Butler's solo project.

Other: Saw them on their first headlining tour in 1998. Then opened for them twice in 2010. The first time we opened for them, I asked for an extra backstage pass for our photographer. They forgot to mark on it that it was a limited access pass, so I checked off 'all access' and gave it to her. A few hours later, she was up on the stage (side stage) with Sevendust taking photos of them. She went to their afterparty too.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Face To Face
2. Black
3. Born To Die
4. Praise
5. Bitch

Shinedown

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: FM, "45"

Other: Not a big fan, but they've got at least five good songs. In 2010, I opened for them (with Sevendust, Puddle Of Mudd, Chevelle & 10 Years), then saw them all again the next day (I had bought tix to the second show, then later got the opportunity to open for them on the first show). Gotta say, Shinedown's set was pretty scripted. It was like watching the same movie twice. The crowd loved them, but I left halfway through the first time and even sooner the second time. Both nights the singer did this weird "L-shaped" motion with the microphone the whole time. He would put the mic in front of the bridge of his nose, bring it down to his mouth, sing a word as he pulled the mic outward away from his mouth, then bring the mic back up to the bridge of his nose and repeat that motion - for every .. single .. word. I just watched some live footage of the band from 2008, 2010 and 2020 and he didn't do it in those videos, so maybe it was just a quick phase he was going through?

HIGH FIVE:

1. Cut The Cord
2. The Human Radio
3. Devour
4. Sound Of Madness
5. Heroes

They are ok. I don’t have any of their stuff, but I don’t usually change the station unless I notice something good on another channel.

I’ve never been able to leave a show early. I figure that I’ve paid for the ticket, I might as well see how it goes. Bands usually save the best for last too, so there should be something good at the end.

If I'm paying the bucks to see a band in a big venue, the tickets are usually expensive enough (and I'm cheap enough) to stay till the end. I drag my heals and not worry about getting out of the lot quickly. If I expect that I'm going to want to skip the traffic, I'll try to park away from the building close to an exit and walk the extra bit. Shows in bigger cities, I'll park in a garage off site or try to hit a bar after the show if the traffic is too crazy.

Most big venues worth the price of admission have restaurants and bars on site. Or at least very nearby. My first concert (Whitesnake) that Idea hadn't taken hold yet.

Simon & Garfunkel

Genre: folk rock

Discovered: don't remember

Other: For years I've been meaning to dig into their deep tracks. I've walked into used record shops and heard their albums playing overhead a few times and it seems very un-pop and underground, and intriguing. It's a shame Art has resorted to badmouthing Paul.

HIGH FIVE:

1. The Sounds Of Silence
2. Homeward Bound
3. Scarborough Fair
4. The Boxer
5. The 59th Street Bridge Song

Over the years I've realized that Paul Simon belongs in the top echelon of singer-songwriters. His music and lyrics are genius, and aside from his pleasant singing, his natural guitar-playing abilities are really a standout.
No question about any of that. I just can't get into the S&G stuff.
I like more of his solo material. (Sorry Art.....)
