Hurricane update btw/some minor wind and that's it. If we get any wind at all it will be today according to the news. Looks like (fingers still crossed) we will miss any of the real bad stuff.

Some scary videos coming out of the Bahamas.

Okay, since the Hurricane thread has turned into a Disney Theme Park thread, I will ask if you all knew Walt Disney proposed building a five-story, indoor Riverfront Square theme park in St. Louis? The city did not want to spend $9,000,000 on the building and August Busch Jr. thought Walt was crazy for thinking the park could be successful without beer sales. (Memo to August Busch Jr.: It would have been.)

It's amazing that it's "only" 20 people. For as bad as the storm is, I was afraid the numbers would be much higher at first. Hopefully, it doesn't get much worse.

On September 2, an 85-year-old North Carolina man fell off a ladder while he was boarding up his windows in advance of the hurricane and died of his injuries. There were also two hurricane-related deaths in Florida. Hmm, Florida. Did somebody mention Florida?

OK........I'm thinking this is in the "funny but cool at the same time" category.

There were four deaths in Alabama from Hurricane Danny in 1997. There have been no hurricane-related deaths in the state since that time, not even from Hurricane Katrina. Of course we could always take a black felt-tip pen and draw some stick figures on the Alabama map and call them victims of Hurricane Dorian. Would that be ethical?

CNN just spoke by phone with a Bahamian who said groups of people who lost their homes to Hurricane Dorian are breaking in to undamaged homes and, so they'll have a place to live, forcing the residents out at gunpoint. Mob mentality has taken over.

Exploding a nuclear weapon in the eye of a hurricane will have no effect other than to put tens of millions of people at risk of dying from radioactive fallout. No, I can't say that seems like a good idea. And what makes a death toll "official"? The official death toll from Dorian in the Bahamas is 43 – but the captain of a hospital ship has requested 1,000 body bags. It's like there's a government official somewhere whose attitude is, "I don't care how many dead bodies are on the ground. They're not officially dead until I say so! Until then, they don't count."

I don't get why they are wanting to downplay the body count.

To be officially dead they probably need to be identified. I suspect with the lack of infastructure that is going to be painfully slow. They always say they expect it to rise. That probably means they have body bags in their waiting room still to identify.

The official death toll in the Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian is 50. More than 1,300 people are missing. Nobody wants to say they're "missing and presumed dead." No, they're simply "missing." But look what Jeff Bezos is doing! He does have a heart!

But look what Jeff Bezos is doing! He does have a heart!

His "relief supplies" are just the Amazon cargo planes flying by and dropping hundreds of thousands of Echo Dots, unwrapped and without parachutes, onto the surviving population.

That was my joke but it reminds me of a sweet story about my dad.

After the Japanese got their asses bombed to nuclear shit and gave up, the guards at the concentration camp fled Indonesia. The surviving Dutchmen had nowhere to go so they, including my dad, just stayed in the liberated camps. So they were in their prison but not prisoners anymore. The US would do scheduled flyovers and drop crates of supplies. I still have a wool blanket he got from an allied drop which is pretty sweet. Anyway, at this point my father was 16 years old and 80 pounds so you can imagine the old man (who was actually the young teen at the time) wanted to grab a meal. In these crates we dropped was a whole bunch of cans of Spam. My dad loved it and so did everyone else...As shitty as spam is, it beats the hell out of dying or eating a rat. So he and everyone else ate a shitton of Spam and felt like kings. Well the Dutch wound up staying in the camps for a couple months. My dad told me that after about 6 weeks, he and these people who were literally nearly starved to death, started to get sick of the Spam and would always hope that we would drop something else.

Don't know If I told it the same way my dad would. He made it out to be a nice, somewhat funny story about how even when these people were all almost dead just a few weeks prior, they still all got sick of the food that helped save their lives.
