DRC Madness #23 - DRC All-Time Songs

It's a good song. One could argue the same about "Reeling in the Years" as #1 as well. Or "Take It Easy". All 3 good songs but obviously heavily influenced by personal taste.
Good song, yes. And from a good album. I can see why it made top 50 on some lists. But from a purely objective viewpoint, it's no Reeling in the Years. The storyline, the guitar work, the era of rock it represents, the prolific nature of the band's output it represents, etc.

Subjectively, of course, I have strong opinions, but that doesn't factor in to another's personal taste.

I don't mean to imply that everyone should have Reeling in the Years on their list. To some people, the song means nothing to them. I was just thinking that a big hit by a big band would rank higher. More along the lines of the Beatles or Beach Boys or Simon & Garfunkel.

In my particular case, Reelin‘ in the years isn’t even my favorite Steely Dan song (Any World That I’m Welcome To or Aja qualifies).

We discussed this before. How does one rank/order the songs? To me I do it by my favourite is #1. And so on. There is no right or wrong answer. Now if he picked "Your Having My Baby" we could definitely laugh at him.

I wasn't the one who brought that song into the discussion. Personally, I love many songs by them, with Aja and Deacon Blues both in my top 50 of this list. But hating Steely Dan, or being indifferent to them is not relevant to the song Down Under that I was referring to.

I judge songs on storyline and guitar work, but not the era it represents or the band's output. Those aren't song-judging qualities to me. The impact the song made at the time can be a factor for me, but that's about as far from the actual guts of the song itself I get when rating a song.

I can confidently say that we've all given this way more thought than the song Down Under deserves.

I brought it and "Take It Easy" into the discussion as those were the 3 #1 songs in that set. All 3 voted the favourite of one of us. One thing I have learned from compiling this list is everybody has different tastes and ranks. If we all had the same list, it would be a pretty easy countdown but rather boring.

Down Under is not my all-time favorite song. It is just my favorite of the 256 songs posted on page 6 by Mister WolFyre. Down Under has been recorded by more than 60 artists including James Last, Carl Wave, Rawhide, Pennywise, Terrorvision, the Bradleys and Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. Here is a 2008 live version by Ringo's band featuring Men At Work lead singer Colin Hay

He was in the Ringo I saw a month or so ago and they did that song too. He looked a bit older than this video. Edgar Winter looks just as old.

Colin Hay is 69. Edgar Winter is 75. On July 7, Ringo will be 82. Pardon me, I'm going to go sit in the corner and quietly sob.

According to IRBS, it was nominated by you. So I took that to mean that you had the choice of any song to nominate as your #1, and you chose that.

On page 1 – Go look! – I listed 30 of my favorite songs, including Down Under. The list was in alphabetical order. My all-time favorite song is Frankie Avalon's 1959 number-one hit Venus, which was also on my list – but it didn't make the final 256.

IRBS quoted my post just before I corrected it. Ringo will be 82, not 80. Paul McCartney is now 80. Brian Wilson is 80. Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, David Crosby and Chubby Checker are 81. Tina Turner and Grace Slick are 82. Bill Wyman is 85. Jerry Lee Lewis is 86. Tony Bennett is 95. Yikes!

I just looked at your top 50 list you posted a few pages back. Nearly all of them are great songs IMO. For me, I'd say that at least 40 of them would make more sense as #1. Venus too. But it's your list, not mine.
