DRC Madness #23 - DRC All-Time Songs

While I'd still like a ruling on how to categorize "worst", let me ask;

- You prefer "Tragedy" by The Bee Gees over "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day or "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits?
- You prefer "Old Time Rock 'N Roll" by Bob Seger to "Tempted" by Squeeze or "When Doves Cry" by Prince?
- You prefer "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow to "So Much To Say" by Dave Matthews Band?
- You prefer "Islands In The Stream" by Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers or "Too Much Heaven" by The Bee Gees to any of those 10 songs?
Since we could not agree on a definition of what was best, how do we expect a ruling on what is worst? I can make one but since you don't agree on my definition of best you likely won't agree on my definition of worst. If you want to include you can chose up to 10 songs which you feel worst by your own definition.

And until you mentioned it, I was surprised to see "Copacabana" in this list at all. I don't even remember voting on it but I must have.

There are different approaches one can use to pick a favorite song, but every one of them results in a song you really like. And I get to decide which criteria I want to use.

It's not the same for the other end of the list, because it includes songs I know and dislike, songs I don't know and have no opinion of, and songs that are in a genre I dislike. Like I said, even Sadchild separates songs he knows from the ones he doesn't know.

I think I'll refrain from voting for worst. There's quite a few songs I'm not sure I know.

I am also refraining. For one thing, there are a couple songs I dislike but not enough to go on a worst list. The songs I truly despise are not on this list. I also am not going to comment on songs I do not know. The second reason is that since I already have the spreadsheet, choosing negative songs could be viewed as a conflict of interest.

I would assume that you would not be including songs you don't know but I will leave it to you to decide whatever methodology you want to use for your worst 10. There is no right or wrong answer. And inclusion of the worst is also not mandatory. If you don't want to include, that is fine too.

1. Barely, it's like being stabbed with a smaller knife.
2. Definitely, no question whatsoever. "Old Time" is on my 500+ list.
3. Yes, it's a bad song but fun in a shmaltzy way. DMB is talented but that bumpkin yokel hillbilly stuff makes me nauseous.
4. "Islands" sucks, but at least the melody is catchy, as evidenced by "Ghetto Superstar". "Heaven" sucks too, but at least there's talent in those harmonies.

I listened to at least a small clip of every song before voting on my favorites. So I've had some exposure to each. I almost put Cash/U2 "Wanderer", a song I first heard because of this madness, on my worst ten list. If we expanded to 15, it would be on there.

That's fine, it shows real dedication to the contest. But personally, I make it a point NOT to make instant judgements when it comes to favorites. When I presented my chronological list of favorites over the past year or two, I'd come across unfamiliar songs from an artist (while sampling videos), and sometimes form an opinion. But I'd never include them, because the objective is to share my all-time established favorites.

Yeah I didn't include any songs I was hearing for the first time in my all-time fav voting. I mostly wanted to see if I knew any of them already because sometimes I'll see a song name, not recognize it, listen, and go 'oh I do know that one'. But choosing the ones I like the least isn't "a list of my all time worst songs", it's just the ones I like the least from the list.

Once you get all the lists, are you going to announce the winners all at once, or countdown style?
I was thinking about that. Perhaps a bit of both. Was going to announce the ones that had no votes in a batch. And then maybe do 3-5 a day. However, if you all prefer just a list, I can do that too. I was also going to summarize with each songs who voted for it at what position each voted.

IRBS has been practicing his announcing: "At #38, a quartet whose lead singer got his start performing with a doo-wop group on a street corner in Philadelphia." :D
Now you spoiled it. Maybe one of the remaining voters will move it so now I can say "At #37 ..." and it will be original.

And we could try to guess what the top ten songs are. Maybe IRBS could award a Loonie as a prize to whoever comes the closest.

I don't have any lists. I wouldn't know where to start, and I'd never manage to finish it because the songs would be constantly changing.

I don't do lists either. But it's a predefined set of 256 songs; it's not like you have to think them up. So here's what I did: I deleted the songs I didn't know or didn't like. Then I grouped all the songs by the same artist together - I found it easier to see all the Stones/Elton/Bowie/Beatles etc. songs at once. Then I just took the songs that I really like, and moved them to the top. I moved the OK songs to the bottom. And that got me 90% of the way. After that, I'd look at the list, and think that certain songs shouldn't be higher/lower than other ones. And that's it. The ones at the bottom get dropped, and you have 50.

Or not.
