I guess it's possible that everything you're saying is accurate. Normally, a well is drilled down several hundred feet, and all you see is the well cap, which is the top of the well pipe with a cover on it, that allows you to pull up the well pump if needed. This was our well cap right when it was installed

When the well cap ends up in someone's yard, people will build a little well hut around it, so it doesn't look so ugly. Ours is on the wooded far side of our driveway, and there's a decorative rock blocking the view. And this is our entire septic system

The pipe comes out of the house from the lower right, and goes into the concrete tank. Then the liquid comes out of the tank and goes to the leach field through the light blue pipe.
