Do We Have A "stupid Things Happening In Florida" Subforum?

In the Philly burbs we had well water and a septic tank. The well was cool cause it has a little concrete hut built over the part where the pipes came out of the ground to connect to the house and in the winter my dad had to put a heat lamp in there to prevent the pipes from freezing.

But my main point here is I thought the septic tank was so freaking cool as a kid. My parents always told me to stay away from the lid cause while it was also concrete they didn't want me messing around with it and falling in or whatever. So it was mysterious...that made it cooler. Then when the guys came with the truck a few times a year to empty it, it was the coolest! It was a huge brick lined hole in the ground that seemingly went all the way to China. No joke there was a good stretch of time as a young kid where I wanted to be a septic tank guy when I grew up. Haha.

We have septic tanks at my parent's lake/cottage. I am well aware of the septic tank guy. My only question is what the fuck happened to your sense of smell? When he pumps it stinks. I am sure the guy smells even after a 30 minute shower. You think your having problems with women now? As a septic tank guy you probably couldn't get within 5 miles of a girl ... upwind.

That's a pretty fucked up story. A well is deep, and the water line going to the house should be well below the frost line, so it shouldn't ever freeze. But maybe yours was too shallow?

Also, a septic tank gets pumped every other year or so, not (usually) several times a year. And every tank I know of is concrete, no brick. But maybe old ones had brick. Plus, the concrete lid weighs a couple of hundred pounds. I don't think a kid would accidentally move it. And unless you had no sense of smell, I would think a kid wouldn't want to be anywhere near a tank being pumped.

Ok so I may have details about the well wrong but I know for a fact that like maybe 20 yards away from the house, kinda in the woods but still in the fenced in part of my parent's property there was this concrete hut (not tall enough to stand in, maybe like 5x5x5) that had pipes coming out of the ground that were connected to the well. And I'm 100% positive about that heat lamp part cause my mom would get super pissed the couple times my dad forgot and the pipes froze.

The septic was at least once a year and I think more than that. My folks had 2 houses on the same street right next to each other and they rented the other. The house I mostly grew up in had a pretty suspect cover...I mean you could walk on it and not worry but it would only took like 1 adult to remove it. That's the one with the bricks. Eventually my parents moved to the other house (when I was like 16) and sold the original for tax purposes or something. That one also had a well but I don't remember any hut. Also that one had a much more heavy duty septic tank cover...Like a thick ass round slab of concrete.

Both of these houses were probably built in the 60's or 70's btw.

We also had like oil heat in that first house. The oil truck would come and refill the house. That wasn't nearly as exciting as when the septic tank guys would show up.

I guess it's possible that everything you're saying is accurate. Normally, a well is drilled down several hundred feet, and all you see is the well cap, which is the top of the well pipe with a cover on it, that allows you to pull up the well pump if needed. This was our well cap right when it was installed



When the well cap ends up in someone's yard, people will build a little well hut around it, so it doesn't look so ugly. Ours is on the wooded far side of our driveway, and there's a decorative rock blocking the view. And this is our entire septic system



The pipe comes out of the house from the lower right, and goes into the concrete tank. Then the liquid comes out of the tank and goes to the leach field through the light blue pipe.

Normally, a well is drilled down several hundred feet, and all you see is the well cap, which is the top of the well pipe with a cover on it, that allows you to pull up the well pump if needed. We recently took a rare trip to Boston for one of those immersive Van Gogh exhibits that's touring around the country. The show was great (he was a tragically troubled Dutch artist), but having to navigate the city reinforced our dislike for urban places. The more time we spend in relaxed spaces, the less tolerance we have for traffic, parking, noise, crowds, and dirtiness.

MAJOR LATE BREAKING SEPTIC TANK NEWS!!!!!!!!!

Turns out I have a septic tank at my new Public Storage apartment. Who Knew? North Lauderdale is pretty urban. I just assumed they would be hooked to the city sewage. The place is hooked to city water.

So we had to get the tank drained 2 weeks ago and after talking abt it here I wanted to take pics:



So here is the guy draining it. The guy I wanted to be as a kid. I talked to him and he was cool.

And here is the tank drained. It's WAY different than the one I had in PA. And now that I think abt it the PA tank was probably built in like the 50's not the 70's like I said before...thus why it was brick and able to freely leak into the ground. My parents bought that place in the early 80's but it was a cottage they converted into a home. I think it was super old when they bought it.

Anyway, this is a modern septic tank. It's just a big metal container in the ground like at gas stations. Not bricks that leak into the ground like I remember in PA.

And it took the guy some effort to get the manhole cover off to drain it.

So I started with a septic tank and here I am about to go back to septic tank life.

How did you find out you have one? I assume if you are the manager it would be your job to arrange it being emptied. Without that duty done, there is only one way I can think of you would find out.
