This week is a non-Bubbling Under year so I pulled together the New Singles Reviews for this week.

New and Noteworthy: (Highlights new and developing acts worthy of attention)
  • Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene (peaked at #14)
  • J.D. Martin - Running Out Of Reasons To Run ‎(no Wiki page, didn't chart)
  • Nick Pyzow - Tears of Rage (no Wiki page, no video on YouTube)

Pop Picks (New Releases with The Greatest Chart Potential)
  • Culture Club - Move Away (peaked at #12)
  • Starship - Tomorrow Doesn't Matter Tonight (peaked at #26)
  • Simple Minds - All the Things She Said (peaked at #28)
  • Howard Jones - No One is to Blame (peaked at #4)
  • Diana Ross - Chain Reaction (peaked at #66)

Pop Recommended (Records with potential for significant chart action)
  • Peter Frampton - All Eyes on You (didn't chart)
  • Marilyn Martin - Move Closer (didn't chart)
  • Del Fuegos - I Still Want You (peaked at #87)
  • Oingo Boingo - Stay (didn't chart)
  • Todd Sharp - I Don't Want to Leave You (didn't chart)
Comments:
  • The Blow Monkeys was one of my favorites. I had several of their cassettes. The other singles in the "New and Noteworthy" section are pretty rare.
  • The Pop Picks were spot on with the exception of "Chain Reaction". Even though the song hit #1 in the UK that couldn’t guarantee a hit here. The US and UK could be quite different chart wise.
  • Most of the Pop Recommended listing didn't pick up much traction. I didn’t know about the "Move Closer" remake. The original was by Phyllis Nelson and the song went to #1 in the UK, but didn't chart R&B or Hot 100 here. Another song by Phyllis Nelson, "I Like You", is in the "Didn't Make the 40" grouping this week.

This week's only surprise. It was all over the radio up here.

I see it was #4 here in Canada.

A true OHW btw.
"A Good Heart" stalled at #74 in the US. I remember his name him which could have been from a local radio show that featured UK imports or from buying Billboard Magazines when I had the money. It reached #1 in the UK and I've heard it on UK 80s Internet Radio too.

Here is another surprise for you: a version of Shot In The Dark by Iron Horse, a bluegrass band from Killen, Alabama. This is one of ten songs on their 2004 CD Black & Bluegrass: A Tribute To Ozzy Osbourne.

Shot In The Dark – the one by Ozzy, not the one by the bluegrass band – reached #10 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Ozzy's had only one top-40 hit on the Hot 100, Mama I'm Coming Home in 1992, but he's had 17 top tens on the Mainstream Rock chart. In 2020, his duet with Elton John got to #7 but failed to make the Hot 100. Top-40 stations didn't bother playing the song. They were too obsessed with Drake, Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and The Weeknd.

29 good.
A couple really crappy songs (#19 & 18 for examples).

Alan Hunter introduced "The Winner Takes It All" as Abba's last top 40. He must have forgotten about "When All Is Said And Done" which reached #27 later in 1981. Perhaps he meant last top 10.

This week we have a #40 peak which replaced another #40 peak last week (Donna Summer).

I remember "Don't Stop the Music" well. It's kind of sleepy, but doesn't bother me too much. I did notice a later song, "Heartbeats", bubbled under for a while never to enter the 100. I won prizes on our local urban station for counting down the Hot 8 at 8. Another song by Yarbrough & Peoples, "I Wouldn't Lie", was one of the songs. It barely cracked the 100 stalling at #93 in 1986.

This week we have a #40 peak which replaced another #40 peak last week (Donna Summer).
Fascinating! Furthering my obsession with 40 peaks. :)

I am surprised at the staying power of "Jessie's Girl". On the hot 100 for 3 weeks at this point. A #1 song before it debuts below it. Another #1 before it is not on the hot 100 yet. Also it won't be #1 until mid-summer since "Betty Davis Eyes" has a 9 week run. And it still was #1 for 2 weeks after all that.
