I remember "Don't Stop the Music" well. It's kind of sleepy, but doesn't bother me too much. I did notice a later song, "Heartbeats", bubbled under for a while never to enter the 100. I won prizes on our local urban station for counting down lathe Hot 8 at 8. Another song by Yarbrough & Peoples, "I Wouldn't Lie", was one of the songs. It barely cracked the 100 stalling at #93 in 1986.
I thought about a few other things. #19 was the peak position for "Don't Stop the Music" which I thought was pretty high. The song was a #1 R&B hit too. It's interesting to see where #1 R&B songs land on the Hot 100. There are some that don't even bubble under.

Okay 9
Bad 23

(17) 30. CELEBRATION - KOOL & THE GANG **

How could I forget this one in my list of 81 above?

(14) 20. THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL - ABBA

My wife says she wants to see Mama Mia again. I do not.

( 8) 9. KEEP ON LOVING YOU - REO SPEEDWAGON **

Not only did I forget this one, but Alan said it peaked at #7. Nope, it's a (as we say in New England) chaat taappaah.

( 5) 7. CRYING - DON MCLEAN

I had to say this in mind to get the total effect. :)

#84 Gap Band "Burn Rubber on Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)"
This song was a #1 R&B hit, but peaked at this position.
#90 Sister Sledge "All American Girls"
I don't think this one should have hit the 40, but I think it's an example of a song that may have fared better before the disco fallout.

This weeks surprises/non-surprises. Rush is always a surprise but not since they only had 1 top 40. Yoko is a surprise to have actually made the hot 100. I have NEVER heard one of her songs played on any radio station anywhere.

I wrote the following on another forum: I knew “Walking on Thin Ice” was a club hit, but I didn’t know it cracked the 100.

I saw someone stated that the popularity of the song may have been spurred by John Lennon's death.

#102 Atlantic Starr "When Love Calls" (peaked at #101, #5 R&B)
#103 Jermaine Jackson "You Like Me Don't You" (entered the 100 at #93 on 4/18/81, peaked at #50, #13 R&B)
#104 Marvin Gaye "Praise" (peaked at #101, #18 R&B)
#105 Ali Thomson "Foolish Child" (peaked at this position)
#106 Mac Davis "Hooked On Music" (peaked at #102)
#107 Fantasy "You're Too Late" (peaked at #104, #1 Dance, #28 R&B)
#108 Stephen Bishop "Send A Little Love My Way" (peaked at this position)
#109 Point Blank "Let Me Stay With You Tonight" (peaked at #107)
#110 Rox "Dddddddance" (peaked at #109)

Comments:
  • I'm loving the sleeper yacht rock tracks bubbling.
  • "Fool In Love With You" gets the cheesy video award for the week. It's good to see another bubbler hit the 40.
  • "When Love Calls" is a quiet storm classic.
  • "Foolish Child" is my favorite from the tracks that I hadn't heard before.
  • I'm certain I've heard "You're Too Late" on Studio 54.
