(40) 45: SHINE ON - L.T.D.

So close to crossing another #40 peaking song off the list! Would have brought the number down to 4.

Just responded to a tweet by Mark Goodman, who said "we must have" gone through each week from Jan 1, 1980 to Dec, 31 1989 on the VJ by now. Maybe they have since they started way back when, but over the last nine years these 5 haven't aired.

I wrote 80son8@siriusxm.com last month about the missing shows. I figured there was nothing to lose.

To recap for this year:

1. L.T.D. "Shine On". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for one week. - 1/31/81
2. Yes "Rhythm of Love". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for one week. - 2/6/88

We missed the chance for the two above.

3. Genesis "Man On the Corner". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for two weeks. - 5/8/82, 5/15/82
4. The Cover Girls "Promise Me". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for one week. - 5/21/88
5. Barbra Streisand "The Way He Makes Me Feel". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for two weeks. - 12/10/83, 12/17/83

These are coming up again in May and December. Hopefully Mark zeroed in on your post.

There were some weeks where a song was at #40 for two or more weeks, but only one week was aired (based on what I could find on forum). This could increase the number of potentially unaired shows. Hopefully all the #40 peaks can air at least once.

Check again on Elvis Presley's "Guitar Man". Reached #28. I knew it had gotten that high because I remember hearing it on AT40.

I didn't start listening religiously until some time in the second half of 2015, so I don't think I've heard these yet.

Well, I heard "Angel In Blue" back in '82 because I heard the whole album back then (I only liked "Centerfold", "Freeze Frame" and "Piss On The Wall" ... but I heard them all). But I haven't heard Angel on the VJ yet, personally.

I find it amazing an theoretically unusual to peak @ #40. To hold for an additional week @ #40 even rarer, Amazed that there are so many.
It's just a number and lots of songs never make the top 10, top 20, top 40, etc. Somewhere between 3000 and 5000 songs made the Hot 100 in the 1980s, and about 30 or so peaked at #40. I'd like to see the statistics on where the Hot 100 songs of the 1980s peaked and the average amount of time spent at those peaks. I suspect that peaking at #40-36 is slightly more frequent than peaking at #41-45 because if you reach #40 you get played on American Top 40, which means nationwide (and international) exposure you might not get otherwise.

I agree. It was very surprising to see. I would think just having the track played on AT 40 would help increase sales/radio adds. The tracks that stayed at #40 for three weeks blew me away. I didn't think I would find that at all.

That is my thinking too. Which makes the #40 peak even more unusual. Peaking higher or lower is not that unusual as it happens all the time.

  • #40 peak - 40 tracks in the 80s
  • #41 peak - 36 tracks in the 80s

What's with the tacky formatting on those graphics? Someone *really* doesn't want others stealing his material?

Here are the songs below the 100 for 2/7/81.

#101 T.S. Monk "Bon Bon Vie" (entered the chart on 2/21/81 at #90, peaked at #63)
#102 Jim Stafford "Cow Patti" (peaked at #102)
#103 The Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime" (peaked at this position)
#104 Night "Love On The Airwaves" (entered the chart on 2/21/81 at #88, peaked at #87 the next week)
#105 Patrice Rushen "Look Up" (peaked at #102)
#106 A Taste Of Honey "Sukiyaki" (entered the chart on 3/7/81 at #83, peaked at #3)
#107 Ambrosia "Outside" (peaked at #102)
#108 Joel Diamond "Theme From Raging Bull" (entered the chart on 2/21/81 at #83, peaked at #82 the next week). The song was out of the 1
#109 Tommy Dee "Here is my Love" (peaked at #107)
#101 Champaign "How 'Bout Us" (entered the chart on 2/14/81 at #84, peaked at #12)

Comments:
  • "Cow Patti" is from the Clint Eastwood file "Many Which You Can".
  • The Talking Heads peak is another travesty. The live version made the 100 on 4/19/86.
  • "Love On The Airwaves". The song was out of the 100 after three weeks.
  • "Outside" is from the "Inside Moves" soundtrack.
  • "Theme From Raging Bull" was on the Motown label. The song was out of the 100 after three weeks.
  • I found the following: "Tommy Dee is a character featured in the film "The Idolmaker" portrayed by actor Paul Land with vocal by Jesse Frederick." "Jesse Frederick is best known for writing and performing the themes to popular television shows such as Full House, Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, and Step by Step."

I am very familiar with both of these. "Cow Patti" got a lot of play in SK. While I would not necessarily expect top 40 (novelty songs don't do that well usually) I thought a top 50 peak would be realistic. Talking Heads should have been top 20.
