40. GAMES PEOPLE PLAY - THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT

Another Parsons song I'd totally forgotten about. I posted the same thing about "Don't Answer Me" last year.

35. HE CAN'T LOVE YOU - THE MICHAEL STANLEY BAND

Hearing this for the first time, not bad.

34. A LITTLE IN LOVE - CLIFF RICHARD

My band is working on covering his song "Devil Woman". I've got 4 people on board with it, hope the 5th is cool with the idea.

30. HEARTBREAK HOTEL - THE JACKSONS

Michael Jackson claimed he'd never heard of the Elvis song of the same name? I call bullshit on that lying little zebra.

18. 9 TO 5 - DOLLY PARTON

Guilty pleasure, as long as it's not too often. Once a year is plenty.

16. GIVING IT UP FOR YOUR LOVE - DELBERT MCCLINTON

Boy, if anyone ever needed to adopt a stage name...

From my post last year about the 1/17/85 countdown:

STAY THE NIGHT – BENJAMIN ORR
STOP TO LOVE – LUTHER VANDROSS
THIS IS THE TIME – BILLY JOEL
WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME – CHICAGO
FALLING IN LOVE (UH-OH) – MIAMI SOUND MACHINE
COMING AROUND AGAIN – CARLY SIMON
TOUCH ME (I WANT YOUR BODY) – SAMANTHA FOX
CHANGE OF HEART – CYNDI LAUPER

ton of songs this week i've barely heard since the 80s. i haven't really missed them, but they certainly flip that nostalgia switch to on.

39. EVERYBODY HAVE FUN TONIGHT - WANG CHUNG

At the super bowl, it was "everybody *bang* Chung tonight"

Patriots' Patrick Chung: Exits Super Bowl with concussion

36. CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE - COREY HART

This went to #1 in Canada? BARF!

33. RESPECT YOURSELF - BRUCE WILLIS

Whatchu talkin' bout (Bruce) Willis?!

avatar_0e38d2ccfdba_128.png

32. FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY) - BEASTIE BOYS

My son heard this song for the first time. At the beginning, Adrock yells, "KICK IT!" My son thought he yelled, "CHICKEN!"

"YOU GOTTA FIGHT! FOR YOUR RIGHT! TO POULLLLLLTRY!"

29. SOMEWHERE OUT THERE - LINDA RONSTADT & JAMES INGRAM

an_american_tail_folder_icon_v1_by_alexartchanimte7-dbwgo8n.png

22. NOBODY'S FOOL - CINDERELLA

The VJ should have mentioned that Tom Keifer just teamed up with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm to re-record this song, and it's better than the original!

12. WE'RE READY - BOSTON

Someone I work with keeps saying this Boston album should have been put out on Windham Hill Records (basically calling it wimpy and as soft as new age music). I always roll my eyes - I think it's ok.

11. KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF - GEORGIA SATELLITES

My son is obsessed with mimicking (and mocking) this song. Specifically, its voice cracks "...jing aling aLI-ing"

1. AT THIS MOMENT - BILLY VERA & THE BEATERS

4e414-make-it-stop.gif

#95 Ron & The DC Crew "Ronnie's Rap"

Saw this and had to investigate. Apparently some morning show guy did it as a comedy bit, and Profile Records picked it up. But WTF......?

Won't make the top 40

I don't think any song is so bad, aside from some of whiney's, to do something so drastic.

#77 Elvis Presley "Guitar Man"

Dire Straits -- great song. Not a huge amount of airplay.
Queen -- this one did get some airplay. Surprised it didn't crack top 40.
Rockpile -- lots of airplay at least up here.
Supertramp -- not a lot of air play then but it seems to be a favourite now on Classic Rewind.
Elvis Presley -- Zombie Rock? He died in 1977. This is 1981.
Bob Segar & Bowie -- both great tunes.

Just an observation -- you didn't seem to like many songs in this decade.

Yes it does look like I didn't like a lot of 80s songs, but actually it's just that I wasn't a fan of a lot of pop hits from the 80s. From about 83-86 I was a hair-band metalhead (Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister, VH, ACDC, Kiss...), and it's rare they broke the top 40. From 87-89 I was getting into alternative like Cure, Depeche, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, etc and also the 2nd wave of hair bands (Winger, Skid Row, GNR, Bulletboys, Lord Tracy...). But I like the countdowns for the trivia and the nostalgia anyway.

And I had the same question about that Elvis song, actually.

38. OOH OOH SONG - PAT BENATAR

Just when you think this is finally gonna end, she goes '1, 2, 3, 4' and the damn thing keeps going.

37. KEEPIN' THE FAITH - BILLY JOEL

'I thought I was the Duke of Earl when I made it with the redhead girl in my Chevrolet.' Always liked that line, not even sure why.

36. NAUGHTY NAUGHTY - JOHN PARR

Always forget this song exists. Very dated, but I dig it.

35. RELAX - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

I (like many others) thought the line was "When you wanna sock it to it". In fact, people associated with the band said that's the lyric. And official releases from the band have it printed as the lyric. However, years later Holly told an interviewer the line is actually, "When you wanna suck it, chew it" which doesn't make sense. Sometimes learning the actual lyric is a downer.

Trevor Horn: The line "When you want to come," is definitely in the song, but the ironic thing is that if you listen to the record, Holly very clearly sings "sock it to it" but ZTT’s publicist, Paul Morley, had printed on the cover "When you want to suck it, do it". That’s not on the record, but was why the BBC decided to ban it.

Holly Johnson: What I sang was "When you wanna suck it, chew it". And I should know. I wrote it.

33. MISTAKE NUMBER THREE - CULTURE CLUB

Had never heard this. I liked it better than way.

24. ALL I NEED - JACK WAGNER

When this song came on, my son ran screaming to the couch, grabbed two pillows and pressed them to his ears. Then he said, "This is the only way to make the pain go away!"

23. JUNGLE LOVE - THE TIME

Prince's lyrics are pretty odd... 'take you to my cage, lock you up and hide the key' ... but the song itself is a banger!

18. OPERATOR - MIDNIGHT STARR

Starts with an annoying phone-off-hook sound, and stays just as annoying for what seems like ten minutes.

15. CALL TO THE HEART - GIUFFRIA

When this came on, I thought "Dear lord, Steve Perry can't be on this countdown THREE times, can he??"

10. I WOULD DIE 4U - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION

Timberlake's Super Bowl performance was pretty mediocre, but this was the highlight.

3. CARELESS WHISPER - WHAM! (FEATURING GEORGE MICHAEL)

Every time, I can only think of this guy...

(there are more but Billboard's database is still broken and I don't have the time to double check the peaks of all the broken ones).
