Not a lot of 'okay' songs this week. It's either great, or it sucks!

Good 12
Ok 5
Bad 23

Already talked about most of these songs..

31. OH NO - THE COMMODORES

I've previously mentioned how this song is growing on me. Well, it moved from my 'bad' list to my 'ok' list. I'm officially a 60 year old woman.

29. UNDER PRESSURE - QUEEN AND DAVID BOWIE

Classic #1. Aside from the made-up words Mercury throws in there, I love everything about it.

24. COME GO WITH ME - THE BEACH BOYS

Dumb cover #1. As I once said ... aside from "Kokomo" (which isn't great, but it's ok), i think the Beach Boys should have taken the entire 80s decade off.

23. LEADER OF THE BAND - DAN FOGELBERG

Classic #2. Lyrics slay me.

22. I WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED IT FOR THE WORLD - RONNIE MILSAP

Guilty pleasure.

20. WAITING ON A FRIEND - THE ROLLING STONES

Classic #3.

15. WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE - DIANA ROSS

Dumb cover #2.

8. CENTERFOLD - J. GEILS BAND

Classic #4.

4. I CAN'T GO FOR THAT - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

Classic #5.

#45 Billy Squier "My Kinda Lover"

"Mah kandah lavah!!" Did he record this in Boston?

Songs that won't reach the top 40
#45 Billy Squier "My Kinda Lover"
#48 Greg Lake "Let Me Love You Once" (aka the 'L' of ELP)
#50 Al Jarreau "Breakin' Away"
#55 Bob Seger "Feel Like A Number"
#65 Steve Carlisle "WKRP In Cincinnati"
#69 Rush "Closer To The Heart"
#72 Neil Young "Southern Pacific"
#74 Kiss "A World Without Heroes"
#88 Dave Stewart "It's My Party" (pre-Eurythmics!)
#92 Kinks "Better Things"

I guess I'm a sucker for the soft rock songs from back then that are now considered to be adult contemporary. That was back when I was in the younger grades in school and my parents probably had the top 40 stations playing a lot.

Good - 27
Okay - 8
Bad - 5

31. OH NO - THE COMMODORES

I've previously mentioned how this song is growing on me. Well, it moved from my 'bad' list to my 'ok' list. I'm officially a 60 year old woman.
I dig this one. I like pretty much all the hits from the Commodores and most of the hit R&B songs from the era.

29. UNDER PRESSURE - QUEEN AND DAVID BOWIE

Classic #1. Aside from the made-up words Mercury throws in there, I love everything about it.
This one always gets on my nerves. I feel like it's incomplete. Let's scat sing since we haven't finished the lyrics.

23. LEADER OF THE BAND - DAN FOGELBERG

Classic #2. Lyrics slay me.
I love this one. Lyrics are great, and reminds me of my grandfather who passed.

22. I WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED IT FOR THE WORLD - RONNIE MILSAP

Guilty pleasure.
Same.

Songs that won't reach the top 40
#69 Rush "Closer To The Heart"
Such a good song!

33. EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC - THE POLICE
This song bothers me too. Come on Sting, did it really need to last so long?
The first two minutes are great, then a half hour of Eeh Oh, Eeh Oh...

Songs that won't reach the top 40
#45 Billy Squier "My Kinda Lover"

With the amount of airplay this gets on SXM you think it was top 10.

#55 Bob Seger "Feel Like A Number"
Surprising. But I may be confusing my personal like of the song with its popularity.
#65 Steve Carlisle "WKRP In Cincinnati"
This is the second countdown this was mentioned. It must have spent a great deal of time not being a hit.
#69 Rush "Closer To The Heart"
So many good Rush songs did didly squat on the American charts.

This one [Under Pressure] always gets on my nerves. I feel like it's incomplete. Let's scat sing since we haven't finished the lyrics.

This is both my least favourite Queen song, and my least favourite Bowie song. It was Vanilla Ice's best song but that isn't saying much.

There's a cover of "Under Pressure" by My Chemical Romance, and you can tell the singer doesn't know what to do in the scat/we-havent-finished-the-lyrics parts. If I remember correctly, he even skips some - and I don't blame him.

33. EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC - THE POLICE
Yeah I agree. Love it but I often find myself enjoying the first few minutes and then moving on before the song's ended.

#55 Bob Seger "Feel Like A Number"
Peaked at #48 - I know it, liked it, still like it, still hear it.
#66 Bob Seger "Tryin' To Live My Life Without You"
Peaked at #5 - Don't recognize the title, probably never heard it (unless it was on a VJ Big 40), long forgotten?

I've already commented on a lot of these songs in the past.
New comments:

39. KYRIE - MR. MISTER
9. BROKEN WINGS - MR. MISTER

Explained to my son that this is who Train is talking about in that (awful) "Hey Soul Sister" song.

30. FACE THE FACE - PETE TOWNSHEND

He shoulda sang the verses through a megaphone. He sounds like a ring announcer.

29. SEX AS A WEAPON - PAT BENATAR

Very overlooked Benatar song

24. EMERGENCY - KOOL & THE GANG

I could dance to it if it came on at a club, but I'd never listen to it just to hear it.

12. BURNING HEART - SURVIVOR

220

11. SEPARATE LIVES - PHIL COLLINS WITH MARILYN MARTIN

Told the 'peeeeenissss' story to my 12 year old son while this song was playing. He laughed for what felt like an hour.

1. SAY YOU, SAY ME - LIONEL RICHIE

The sudden upbeat-and-kinda-rockin part of this song is so weird. I wonder who decided to just grab the adrenaline knob on this track and crank it from 0 to 50 for a few seconds, then turn it right back down?

#61 Queen "One Vision"

I listened to this album a hundred times back in '87

#95 Talking Heads "And She Was"

A #54 peak, surprised this didn't crack the top 40.

Will never reach the top 40
#45 Rush "The Big Money"
#48 Asia "Go"
#53 Twisted Sister "Leader Of The Pack"
#57 Wang Chung "To Live And Die In LA" (#41 peak so close!)
#61 Queen "One Vision"
#89 John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band "Small Town Girl"
#90 Loverboy "Dangerous"
#92 Chicago Bears "The Super Bowl Shuffle" (#41 peak also!)
#94 Kiss "Tears Are Falling"
#95 Talking Heads "And She Was"

There are a bunch of songs listed on the Hot 100 on Billboard's website with below-40 peaks, but they are wrong. One example: Hooters "Day By Day" has a "#59 peak" but the real peak is #18. It's pretty sad when I have to go to Wikipedia to get the correct information...

I'm always happy to see Rush get that high on the charts. I tend to forget that Big Money got a lot of play on the radio and MTV. (I still want a Steinberger.)

I always liked Mr Misters guitar sound too.

Surprised but not surprised at Rush. They only had 1 top 40 hit but still ... so many great songs. And Eddie Murphy as a singer was @ #2.
The Queen song was decent. Obviously not Bohemian Rhapsody quality but a decent song. I would have put it into the 20s.
The Bears song was everywhere. #41. I guess while it got airplay probably lacked record sales.
And She Was gets a lot of airplay now. Surprised it didn't crack top 40 then.

We just heard 28 of these songs last month!

Good 14
Ok 11
Bad 15

38. SEND ME AN ANGEL - REAL LIFE

VJ was wrong, they didn't re-release the song in 89, they re-recorded it and released that. Also, they aired the 89 re-recording, not the original version.

37. REMEMBER THE NIGHTS - THE MOTELS
35. NIGHTBIRD - STEVIE NICKS

Never heard these songs before. Both were ok though.

36. NOBODY TOLD ME - JOHN LENNON

An explanation of how a song from a guy who'd died 3 years earlier is on the chart would have been a good thing for the VJ to offer.

28. SO BAD - PAUL MCCARTNEY

Appropriately titled track. *barf*

25. MIDDLE OF THE ROAD - THE PRETENDERS

"Brrrt! Nyeeeooo! *harmonica*"

19. IF I'D BEEN THE ONE - .38 SPECIAL

Always loved this song. Too bad radio has pretty much forgotten about this song since 1985.

15. THE CURLY SHUFFLE - JUMP 'N THE SADDLE

"Well-a nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk!" I'm an editor over at genius.com. After hearing this, I went there and annotated the song lyrics and filled out the song bio, so for anyone looking for trivia about the song (though most of it is fairly common knowledge anyway).

Jump 'N The Saddle Band – The Curly Shuffle Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

#58 Prince "Let's Pretend We're Married"

"Hey Marsha, I'm not saying this just to be nasty, but I sincerely wanna.." *bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!*

Won't make the top 40
#44 Rick James "Ebony Eyes"
#58 Prince "Let's Pretend We're Married"
#60 Bob Dylan "Sweetheart like You"
#70 Jackson Browne "For a Rocker"
#74 Eddie Money "The Big Crash"
#80 Musical Youth "She's Trouble"
#85 U2 "I Will Follow" (Live)
#90 Toni Basil "Over My Head"
#91 Rodney Dangerfield "Rappin' Rodney"
#95 Alan Parsons Project "You Don't Believe"
#99 Kiss "Lick It Up"

NOTE: Billboard.com's Hot 100 for 1/21/84 is messed up. Songs on the way down have the correct peak positions noted, but songs that went up from the previous week don't. Like I said last week, pretty sad when I have to go to Wikipedia to get correct information.

No surprises in not the top 40.

The Stevie nicks song was new to me but I really liked it.

I think the Lennon song was found unreleased material. Or Zombies.

They have talked about it in previous countdowns. Has reference to a UFO sighting over New York.
