Much the same reason why you hear songs like 'The Devil went down to Georgia' on Classic Rock radio nowadays.

37. YOUNG TURKS – ROD STEWART

this song always takes me back to being 11 years old. nostalgia.

35. PAC-MAN FEVER – BUCKNER AND GARCIA

i remember a popular comedy bit where someone was 'interviewing' a shark, but all of the responses were song clips. one of the questions was "why are you grabbing my hand?!" and the answer was "wouldn't you give your hand to a friend?" taken from melissa manchester's "midnight blue". a friend and i decided to create our own. one of our questions was "why are you going to the hospital?" and the answer was supposed to be "cuz i got pac man fever". we didn't have that record, so he called the local radio station and requested it. they said they'd play it. half hour later i called to request it. still nothing. my friend called again. still nothing. so eventually my friend just hit record and said, in a disgusted tone, "pac-man fever".

btw, i just looked for the original comedy bit and found it. i hadn't heard this in forever! apparently it was a top ten hit back in '75? i had no idea. i don't think i heard it until '81 or '82. dickie goodman "mr jaws"

22. LOVE IS ALRIGHT TONIGHT – RICK SPRINGFIELD

something peppy to break up the downtempo schmaltz!

i still dig this whole album. i also recommend his 2008 album venus in overdrive, start with the title track.

21. THROUGH THE YEARS – KENNY ROGERS

my wife still knows every single word. because that's all her mom listened to around the house. anne murray, neil diamond, etc.

16. TAKE IT EASY ON ME – THE LITTLE RIVER BAND

forgot this song existed. can't say i missed it tho...

2. I CAN’T GO FOR THAT – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES
1. CENTERFOLD – THE J. GEILS BAND

i might have already said this? but in 6th grade, at indoor recess, kids were allowed to play 45s they brought in. i heard these two songs every schoolday for weeks and weeks and weeks. good thing i liked them both. had it been the #3 and #7 songs, i may have snapped and gone columbine.

1988. This is a good countdown

I love this song. When me and my exwife went on road trips, we would do down this road singing this song. I had to be Neal and she was Dusty. I always wanted to be Dusty

40. ROCKET 2 U - THE JETS

I thought I was more familiar with this band back in the 80's, they had some nice little throwaway pop songs that charted, but I can say I've never heard this one.

39. CRAZY - ICEHOUSE

Nice little song by one of those bands during the 80's like Simple Minds or Squeeze, along the same vein. That video though, Mullet City!

37. (SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY - MICHAEL BOLTON

Ah that time during the 80's where Michael Bolton ran through the Motown/Old R&B catalog like Sherman through Georgia. I'll stick to the original, thanks!

36. MAN IN THE MIRROR - MICHAEL JACKSON

I still remember the grammys that year when he performed this song on stage, backed up by a full gospel choir toward the end. The man knew how to put on a show!

35. HYSTERIA - DEF LEPPARD

This was kind of my go-to metal album during that time, This was right around the time that hair metal got popular, but I never considered these guys in that same class (although they heavily influenced it).

32. 853-5937 - SQUEEZE

Jenny's sister?

25. GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU - GEORGE HARRISON

You could have taken the solo efforts of all the Beatles and put them on one record, and it would be at least a halfway decent Beatles album (then again, isn't that what the White Album was?)

21. PUSH IT - SALT-N-PEPA

I remember this song being played liberally in gym class (along with 'It Takes Two' from Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock)

11. NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP - RICK ASTLEY

Not much needs to be said here.

7. HAZY SHADE OF WINTER - THE BANGLES

A very good song from a very dated movie, 'Less Than Zero' is so eighties it hurts!

6. NEED YOU TONIGHT - INXS

This album still gets an incredible amount of play in my collection. This and 'Devil Inside' are two favorites of the 'hits', where 'Mystify' is the real good deeper track.

5. WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS - THE PET SHOP BOYS & DUSTY SPRINGFIELD

I've always had a soft spot for the Pet Shop Boys and Erasure. Every time they come on the radio the volume goes up a little bit.

1. COULD'VE BEEN – TIFFANY

Tiffany and Debbie Gibson on the same countdown. It was this time you were either a Tiffany fan or a Debbie Gibson fan, or if you're like me, too busy listening to Metal and Alternative to care.

Although their solo careers didn't produce music at the same high standards of their Beatles days, they still made a lot of good tunes.

As an exercise in fun, we should consider spinning off into a new thread and come up with what an album's worth of what their best solo career songs would look like...

Of course you could go a couple of directions with that... songs with most commercial appeal, or songs with most artistic merit.

38. HONESTLY - STRYPER

I remember thinking "Calling On You" and "Free" were ok. But this song just made me wanna wretch.

22. I COULD NEVER TAKE THE PLACE OF YOUR MAN - PRINCE

I keep hearing how great this album is, but every song I've ever heard from it I can't stand.

20. POP GOES THE WORLD - MEN WITHOUT HATS

Someone tell Onederland about this one too.

19. I FOUND SOMEONE - CHER
16. CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU - GLORIA ESTEFAN & MIAMI SOUND MACHINE
15. I LIVE FOR YOUR LOVE - NATALIE COLE
9. DON'T SHED A TEAR - PAUL CARRACK

Totally forgot these songs existed.

8. SAY YOU WILL - FOREIGNER

I actually used to like this whole album. Still kinda do.

I never liked Stryper.

I wasn't one to call bands posers, but.....

Something about their whole... Styper thing....just seemed too contrived.
I thought they should have worried more about the music than the image.

I remember reading an interview with the singer from Krokus where he was talking about bands that were doing the whole leather and big hair thing. He said something like, "You can't hear that stuff on the radio, and when it's hot out, I want to wear shorts!"

Yeah, Stryper was quick to drop the shtick when they got real big, leading me (and others?) to think it was more of an exploitation than a '100% we're-buying-into-all-this-shtick'. But a lot of devout followers (of them and Christ) weren't too happy about it, and that was when the limelight ran away from them.

from Wikipedia

This album marked a radical change in the musical and visual direction of the band. Gone were the yellow and black spandex outfits, the bold evangelical lyrics and the familiar yellow-and-black band logo with Isaiah 53:5. In their place were leather outfits, and lyrics more focused on rock n' roll and relationships, although arguably from a Christian worldview. The album was praised by many critics as the band's strongest work to date, but a large percentage of Stryper's Christian fanbase felt betrayed by this unannounced creative metamorphosis, and many of them accused Stryper of selling out their image and message for greater mainstream acceptance. As a result, Against the Law sold poorly compared to the band's previous gold and platinum releases.

They were just on tour in the area recently, and they had the old yellow and black leather outfits again.

It reminded me of Cakes Rock and Roll Lifestyle. "Aging black leather and hospital bills, tattoo removal, and dozens of pills. Your liver pays dearly now for youthful magic moments, but rock on completely with some brand new components."

The only 3 songs I liked on the countdown. There were another half dozen that I think are ok, but these are the only ones I'd go out of my way to listen to.

34. LOVE ON THE ROCKS – NEIL DIAMOND
17. HELLO AGAIN – NEIL DIAMOND

Not a fan of these songs, but I will say he does sing them with a certain power that really resonates.

32. SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD – THE EAGLES

Awesome harmonies (but not a fan of the song overall).

20. MISS SUN – BOZ SCAGGS

I like Lido and Lowdown, but here he sounds like Kermit The Frog (or Aaron Neville, same thing essentially).

5. THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE

Always makes me think of the Darth Vader-ish person in the video. So weird.

3. CELEBRATION – KOOL & THE GANG

I used to like this song, until I heard it at every single friggin' high school dance, birthday, wedding, night on the town, corporate party, christmas party, fundraiser, grocery store run, baby shower, bat mitzvah, coronation...

2. I LOVE A RAINY NIGHT – EDDIE RABBITT

Guilty pleasure.

Won't get too detailed this week, but lots of stuff I haven't heard in a while, lots of stuff I've never heard (even from familiar artists) and lots of stuff I hope never to hear again.

They do have way better songs. Like this one.
