I am ok with all K&TG songs except for the one which has lyrics "Fresh, Exciting". Think it came out in 1985. Can't stand that mainly due to its use in a coffee commercial.

37. SO BAD – PAUL MCCARTNEY

I thought this was Barbara Streisand or something. Couldn't believe it was Macca. Not as bad as Wonderful Xmastime though. For the record, he does have solo songs I dig, like Coming Up, Live And Let Die and Queenie Eye.

29. BREAK MY STRIDE – MATTHEW WILDER

When this song came on, my son shouted "No! Not that overused 80s synth!"

23. THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE – DAN FOGELBERG

Fogie with the date rapey lyrics back in 84? "She says no, but she means yes..."

3. 99 LUFTBALLONS - NENA

Prefer the English version. Same with the cover of "Der Kommissar".

1. JUMP – VAN HALEN

When I was 13, this video was the definition of awesome. Now I just laugh at how cornball it is. What the hell was "Smilin' Eddie" on?

Here are some songs that were on the Hot 100 that week, but we'll never hear them on the VJ Big 40 because they never made it there:

#49 Rolling Stones "She Was Hot"
#52 Big Country "Fields Of Fire"
#57 Billy Idol "Rebel Yell"
#58 Adam Ant "Strip"
#66 Motley Crue "Looks That Kill"
#88 Thomas Dolby "Hyperactive"
#95 Stray Cats "Look At That Cadillac"

It's a shame some these songs couldn't be added to the playlist rotation on 80's on 8. I guess you can hear some of them on the app if you customize the channel though. 1st Wave does play #58 Adam Ant Strip. Billy Idol

I tend to prefer english versions over foreign language versions, but I do like the original german version of Rammstein "Du Hast" over the english one. I guess "You... you hate... you hate me..." just doesn't sound as cool as "Du... du hast... du hast mich".

And for the sake of conversation, I like The Police "Hungry For You" - a song sung mostly in French. And though I would never ever admit it publicly, especially on a forum like this, I like the spanish-plus-english song Gerardo "Rico Suave".

Mentioning Du Hast gives you a pass on Rico Suave...... Even though it has a crap ton of hook....

With the Nena and Falco tracks, I'm good with either language. It just depends on my mood at the moment.

"Not dead... just resting"
I have to admit that two of my favourite albums are in German, and my German is next to zero, but I like the flow and musical hooks. "Geboren um zu leben" and "Lichter de Stadt" by Unhelig . Video Sample from DVD trailer.
Oomph produced an album of all English covers of some of their original German material - in most cases it held up pretty well, Sandman (Sandmann), and Ready or Not (Augen Auf) in particular. Too much music - way too little time! :)

I've played Oomph twice on my radio show (I play one upbeat hard/heavy song at 5pm every weekday, talking about the artist before spinning it). I'll have to look into that English versions album! I played the German versions of "Labyrinth" and "Augen Auf".

Another heavy German band I've spun is Hanzel Und Gretyl. I've spun them twice too (both songs primarily had English lyrics, but they have some all-German songs too).

Listening to Unhelig now - pretty cool stuff. Can you recommend an Unhelig song that is heavy and upbeat that I could spin on my show? The two you posted are good, but too pop for my show.

38. OBSESSION - ANIMOTION

Never knew this was a cover song.

37. TAKE ME WITH U - PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION

Am I the only one who thought this sounded 'sped-up'? Occasionally a radio edit/remix will be a little faster than the original so pop stations can squeeze more songs (and commercials) into an hour. This felt faster than normal to me.

36. OPERATOR - MIDNIGHT STAR

Not only a terrible song, but it seemed to go on for-friggin-EVER.

19. RELAX - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

Mark Goodman said that Holly is the only member of Frankie on the recording. I'd swear I read that Paul Rutherford is also on there. So it's 2/5th Frankie. I can't find what I read, but I'm pretty sure I read that.

10. THE OLD MAN DOWN THE ROAD - JOHN FOGERTY

Had no idea this was a top 10 song, bigger than "Girls" and "Centerfield". I woulda lost that bet. "You got to hyyyyyyyyyyyydeee hyyyyyyde...."

9. SUGAR WALLS - SHEENA EASTON

"Blood races to your private spots... Come inside my sugar walls." Pretty graphic song for 85, singing about the insides of her vag. Her baby's gonna miss that Morning Train...

7. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS - FOREIGNER

Mark Goodman called this one of the greatest songs of the decade. I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree. Not even in my top 5000 songs of the 80s.

3. CALIFORNIA GIRLS - DAVID LEE ROTH

Loved this as a kid. So cornball now. Was probably only because of the video that I liked the song. Same with "Gigolo". Didn't he leave VH because he felt they were getting 'too pop' and keyboardy... but then this?

1. CARELESS WHISPER - WHAM! FEATURING GEORGE MICHAEL

Risque for work (some might say NFSW)

youtube.com/watch?v=GaoLU6zKaws

Here are some songs that were on the Hot 100 that week, but we'll never hear them on the VJ Big 40 because they never made it there:

#44: Scandal "Beat Of A Heart"
#48: Bronski Beat "Small Town Boy"
#57: Nolan Thomas "Yo Little Brother" <- wtf is THIS?!
#59: John Waite "Restless Heart"
#62: Santana "Say It Again"
#68: Go West "We Close Our Eyes"
#73: Temptations "Treat Her Like A Lady"
#88: Toto "Holyanna"
#96: Steve Miller "Bongo Bongo"
#97: Kim Wilde "Go For It"

side note: This may be the first time Nina did NOT say "and this one is so easy-peasy" when doing her last song intro.
