1986
This one's right in the middle of my DJ tenure - should be fun.
39. HE’LL NEVER LOVE YOU (LIKE I DO) – FREDDIE JACKSON
I thought we might've played this on our Adult Contemporary AM station ( 1340 KNZS...call letters that I LOVE to this day, but don't think are being used ) but it's not familiar at all. I know we played "You Are My Lady" there. OK song.
36. BROKEN WINGS – MR. MISTER
There was a time where I could've gone the rest of my life never hearing this again. But on the rare ( for me ) occasion it pops up now, I just kinda get a warm glow hearing it. Weird how time works, huh?
35. EVERYBODY DANCE – TA MARA & THE SEEN
We never played this, but I remember seeing mentions of it in Radio & Records and The Gavin Report. I had a vague feeling it was Prince-related, & after Googling I see they're from Minneapolis & sound VERY Prince-ish. Produced by Jesse Johnson, so there's the connection. I don't think I'd ever heard it before, though. It's not bad, but I can see why it didn't explode.
34. TARZAN BOY - BALTIMORA
We didn't play this, either. And now I remember it mainly from a Listerine commercial ( I think? hits YouTube...yep, I do ).
31. EVERYTHING IN MY HEART – COREY HART
We played most of his singles, but I don't recall this at all. It might've been a little too wimpy for us, & also just sounds like a half-assed rewrite of his "Never Surrender". The drums on it are RIDICULOUS.
27. FACE THE FACE – PETE TOWNSHEND
I worked in radio riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight before the CD really took hold, so it was all-vinyl, all the time ( aside from the rare times we'd play something on a tape cartridge until we could get the vinyl ). So you had to be ready to kill the output level on any record that had what was called a "cold ending" ( a dramatic abrupt finish to a song, rather than the more common fade-out ). If you were playing a track from an album you were risking it going into the next track if you weren't careful. Or if it was playing from a promo 12" single, you might end up with dead air. I think we played this off a 12-incher, but sweet Jeezus it had a textbook cold ending.
25. LIFE IN A NORTHERN TOWN – THE DREAM ACADEMY
I remember hearing the guy who worked nights ( Rick Allen...I was on overnights, but moved into his shift when he left the station. I wonder whatever happened to him. ) work the living shit out of the intro to this one once. He did a bit about HIS days living in The North, recounting all the things he grew up with. I remember the punch line being "blubber". And he nailed the post perfectly.
24. YOU’RE A FRIEND OF MINE – CLARENCE CLEMONS AND JACKSON BROWNE
I am generally not a fan of Jackson Browne, but I always liked this song.
19. GOODBYE – NIGHT RANGER
I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but we presented their tour in our town & the city even made it "Night Ranger Day". Gave 'em the key to the city, etc. I was the "roadie" for the presentation...provided the sound system & speakers that I had at the time from doing mobile DJ work. Those speakers are still out in my living room...I had a plan to sell them, but Covid fucked that all up. Anybody wanna buy a couple old-ass speakers Night Ranger has spoken thru?
18. IT’S ONLY LOVE – BRYAN ADAMS/TINA TURNER
I remember the video for this one being live, & I used to do a Tina impression from it. At the end of the song, he motions to her & says "ladies & gentlemen...Tina Turner!!!" & she yells back "Bryan Adams!!!!!!". Except since it's live & they just energetically belted out the song it sounds more like "BRINEADMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Which is what my "impression" basically was. To this day, when I hear the song it's hard not to shout "BRINEADMS!!!!!!!!!!"
10. SPIES LIKE US – PAUL MCCARTNEY
GawDAMN, I hated this song. Still do. One of those "how low can I turn down the volume in the studio, & still know what's going on" tracks.
7. WALK OF LIFE – DIRE STRAITS
This is another one, like "Broken Wings" above that I got to the "never need to hear it again" point. Except with this one, I'm still there.
