My two cents for the week:

34. PARANOIMIA - THE ART OF NOISE WITH MAX HEADROOM

I used to love this. I was so off the wall.

28. MONEYS TOO TIGHT TO MENTION - SIMPLY RED

I discovered this was a remake of an unknown R&B group. It was always peculiar to hear Mick Hucknall singing about politics in the US.

24. BABY LOVE - REGINA

I thought this was Madonna at first, but that may have been the point.

23. EARTH ANGEL - NEW EDITION

I'm surprised Beavis didn't make an appearance here.

19. I DIDN'T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON - ROBERT PALMER

This was a remake by Cherelle. She showed up on the 40 with a few duets with Alexander O'Neal later down the road.

13. ALL CRIED OUT - LISA LISA & CULT JAM

The song didn't bother me back then, but I wouldn't listen to it now. Lisa Lisa's voice isn't strong enough for a ballad, but I appreciate the duet which is something not seen much in today's music scene.

10. DANCING ON THE CEILING - LIONEL RICHIE

So cheesy…

Will never make the top 40

There were a lot of solid R&B tracks lurking: #52, #57, #58, #71, etc….

#59 Jermaine Stewart "Jody"

This song was about Jody Watley, who was his best friend. Also, it sounded like he sang "Tigers on the left, sharks on the right". This is not remotely correct. It was diamonds and stars which made me chuckle when I found out.

#62 Pet Shop Boys "Love Comes Quickly"

I'm not sure I knew this one was released as a single.

#79 Doctor And The Medics "Spirit In The Sky"

This was a UK#1. I don't remember seeing the video, but it looks like he's imitating Pete Burns.

#88 Ashford & Simpson "Count Your Blessings"

I was surprised to see this on the 100.

34. PARANOIMIA - THE ART OF NOISE WITH MAX HEADROOM

I used to love this. I was so off the wall.
I still love this-ove-ove-this love this.
It's goofy with a cool groove and great production.

28. MONEYS TOO TIGHT TO MENTION - SIMPLY RED

I discovered this was a remake of an unknown R&B group. It was always peculiar to hear Mick Hucknall singing about politics in the US.
I have zero recollection of this song. It got pretty far up the charts for me to not at least have a slight recollection of it.

I remember reading somewhere that it took the guy who played Max Headroom four hours in make-up/wardrobe. That sounds like torture.

I knew Money's Too Tight to Mention from the Picture Book cassette. I don't recall the song or video in heavy rotation or what prompted me to buy it. I ended up following Simply Red for a while.

Good 7
Okay 6
Bad 27

Heard this exact countdown two years ago.

30. I FEEL FOR YOU - CHAKA KHAN

My guess at #1. In about a month, it will peak at #3.

18. PURPLE RAIN - PRINCE

Pretty sure Alan said the two number ones from this album were "When Doves Cry" and "I Would Die 4 U" (actually 'Doves' and 'Crazy').

4. HARD HABIT TO BREAK - CHICAGO

Hard Habit played again right after the countdown finished, like 20 minutes later.

2. LET'S GO CRAZY - PRINCE

Both of my competitors picked this one. I got whooped!

1. I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU - STEVIE WONDER

This seems to be a theme. Which week did you not get whooped?

Will never make the top 40
#69 Honeymoon Suite "New Girl Now"
#85 Roger Hodgson "Had A Dream"

These 2 are surprising to me. Well not really for Honeymoon Suite -- they are Canadian.

I had about 16.
#69 Honeymoon Suite "New Girl Now"
#71 Krokus "Midnite Maniac"
I would have thought these would have just made it into the top 40.
They both seemed to get a lot of air play around here.
#81 Kiss "Heaven's On Fire"
Not as big as Lick It Up, but I thought it would have been closer to 55 or 60.
#89 Ratt "Wanted Man"
I wouldn't have expected this one to go any higher than 60 or so.

This one should be fun, as it's just a couple months into my time as a radio DJ.

40. THE LAST TIME I MADE LOVE - JOYCE KENNEDY & JEFFREY OSBORNE

Absolutely NO recollection of this song. I wonder if we played it on our adult contemporary AM sister station ( KNZS - such great call letters for a station in Kansas ).

36. WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES - NIGHT RANGER

A couple years later, our station presented them in concert - the town had a Night Ranger Day, the whole shebang. We used some PA speakers I had for the presentation of the keys to the city to the band. I remember the mayor called them the "Night Rangers". They stopped by the station on the way to the show, & I got to chat with Brad Gillis about his time with Ozzy. They were all very nice, except for frontman Jack Blades - who was a complete prick. I'm sure it had nothing to do with him being roughly 4 feet tall.

I still have the speakers.

35. ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT - CYNDI LAUPER

Jules Shear, step up & receive your fat royalty check. Mmmmmm...mailbox money...

34. TORTURE - THE JACKSONS

Nah. Too easy.

29. FLESH FOR FANTASY - BILLY IDOL

Never saw Billy live until he played the Uptown Theater a couple blocks from my place a couple years ago. A fun, if a bit Vegas-y show.

26. WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO – WHAM!

When I used to work on the AM side, we broadcast high school football on Friday nights. Suuuuuuuuuper low-tech, with the play-by-play coming in over the phone line. Which would sometimes cut out, so you always had to have a record cued up to avoid any dead air. I remember having the 12" single of this one cued up one night as the Pittsburg Purple Dragons were storming down the field...( entering flashback mode now ) ...

"He's at mid-field, breaking tackles left & right!!!!"
"He's at the 40!!!"
"The 30!!!!"
"The 20!!!"
"The 10!!!"

"He could go...all...the...w"
( 2 second pause )

"JITTERBUG!!!! ( finger snaps ) JITTERBUG!!!! ( finger snaps ) JITTERBUG!!!! ( finger snaps ) You put the boom boom into my heaaaaaart"

6. CARIBBEAN QUEEN (NO MORE LOVE ON THE RUN) - BILLY OCEAN

Memories of my first night on the air, playing the wrong side of the 45 - which was an instrumental version. And playing it on the wrong speed.

Interesting: From #81 to #93 are ALL 'never make the 40' songs.

#69 Honeymoon Suite "New Girl Now"
#71 Krokus "Midnite Maniac"
#81 Kiss "Heaven's On Fire"
#96 Jefferson Starship "Layin' It On The Line"

We played the snot outta all of these. Little surprised the Honeymoon Suite didn't at least graze the bottom of the 40. But they were all bigger Album Rock hits than Top 40 hits.

Will never make the top 40

#50 Everly Brothers "On The Wings Of A Nightingale"

I remember this one getting into medium rotation on my station. My memory might be hazy, but wasn't it written by Paul McCartney or something like that?

#72 Janey Street "Say Hello To Ronnie"

I don't think I've ever even heard of this one.

#81 Kiss "Heaven's On Fire"

Like most of their no-makeup era singles until "Forever", this one ended up in that high 40's/low 50's range ( as mentioned already ). I'm a fan, but this is one of those songs I was never that into.

#86 Vanity "Pretty Mess"

I would've loved to see this performed live, just to see if it was introduced with "this next song's about jizz".

I gave "Say Hello To Ronnie" a listen, & it sounded vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaguely familiar. But that's about it. The kinda Springsteen-y type of thing you could have some success with at that time on Rock Radio, but I have to assume the fact that she's a female singer didn't help.

And for the record, I was right about McCartney writing that Everly Bros. tune. Please to enjoy the worthless factoids swimmin' around in my noggin.

I did a search in this thread for the word Notorious (looking for a countdown that has the Loverboy song in it), but only Duranx2 showed up. So I can't copy an old posting of this week's 1987 top 40 from this board. Guess we'll have to wait until mid-week for SXM to do it on Facebook? They usually drop it Tuesday or Wednesday....
