36. REALLY WANNA KNOW YOU - GARY WRIGHT

Thought this would never end.

34. GENERAL HOSPI-TALE - THE AFTERNOON DELIGHTS

Wondering... if this is classified as a rap song, this would be the fifth rap song to get onto the Hot 100...?

1. 11/10/1979 - "Rapper’s Delight" Sugarhill Gang
2. 9/6/1980 - "The Breaks" Kurtis Blow
3. 1/31/1981 - "Rapture" Blondie
4. 2/7/1981 - "8th Wonder" Sugarhill Gang
?. 7/22/1981 - "General Hospi-Tale" Afternoon Delights
5. 2/13/1982 - "Apache" Sugarhill Gang

28. DRAW OF THE CARDS - KIM CARNES

This must be one of the oddest (and worst) 80s songs to ever make the 40 in my book. I think I've said this before, but dear lord it bears repeating.

14. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY - SHEENA EASTON

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

7. ARTHUR'S THEME - CHRISTOPHER CROSS

My guess at #1.

1. ENDLESS LOVE - DIANA ROSS & LIONEL RICHIE

My friend's son & old roommate both chose this one. I lose again!

And of all these "won't reach" songs, I think I'm only really familiar with two of them. I couldn't hum any of the others.

3. WHEN I THINK OF YOU - JANET JACKSON

Someone else picked this song.

1. STUCK WITH YOU - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

The other someone else picked this song. I'm last place again!

#70 Beach Boys "California Dreamin'"

Had no idea they remade this one. Very 80s-pop-ified.

#84 Luis Cardenas "Runaway"

Cover of the Del Shannon hit. The music video features Shannon, Donny Osmond and... uh... a bunch of CGI dinosaurs.

Will never make the top 40

I liked this countdown a lot. 32 good/okay songs. Strangely I enjoyed the bottom 20 songs more than the top 20 songs.

That Lisa Lisa song is miserable.

I betcha I'm the only one here who likes The Captain of Her Heart.

40. TRUE BLUE - MADONNA

One of the few classic era Madonna songs that I just can't stand. Too cutesy-pie by half.

38. AMANDA - BOSTON

I remember the day we got the promo 45 in at the station I DJ'd at. We couldn't get it on the air fast enough. If I remember right, it was kind of a surprise it came out at all.

28. MONEYS TOO TIGHT TO MENTION - SIMPLY RED

I was a little surprised to see this one get this high. I thought it was kind of a stiff, & then they had the hits with the 2nd attempt. Huh.

19. I DIDN'T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON - ROBERT PALMER

"But then again, you DID sit down on my hand" - thing I remember saying on the air once. I wasn't great.

9. TYPICAL MALE - TINA TURNER

I'd forgotten all about this 'un. Man, anything she put out at that time was a hit.

8. WALK THIS WAY - RUN D.M.C.

Distinct memories of getting racist phone calls with this one. And telling the people on the line to fuck off.

5. DREAMTIME - DARYL HALL

Always loooooooooooooved this song.

I liked The Captain of Her Heart. :) I posted the clip to Devil's Ball a while back. I think it had should have gained more traction.

Will never make the top 40

#80 David Lee Roth "Goin' Crazy!"

Still have the promo 45 of this with the album cut on the A-side, & the Spanish language version on the flip. And I saw that tour.

#93 Far Corporation "Stairway To Heaven"

This is another one I completely forgot about, thankfully.

#96 REM "Fall On Me"

One of the cool things about the station I worked at was even though it was a Top 40/Album Rock mutant hybrid, since we were in a college town we also played stuff like this. And even earlier tracks like "Can't Get There From Here" & "Driver 8".

#99 38 Special "Somebody Like You"

Would've guessed this got higher. We played the snot outta it. It must've been a much bigger Album Rock hit. That album had a die--cut record cover if I remember right, which must've cost the band a fortune.

I agree about the Madonna record. I remember MTV had a contest for viewers to create the video. :-(

Walk this Way is what really brought rap into the mainstream. It was in genius move on Rick Rubin's part (in my opinion).
