First time on the VJ?

34. ROMANCING THE STONE - EDDY GRANT

We were just talking about this in the "are they a one hit or two hit wonder?" thread.

2. DANCING IN THE DARK - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Just talking about this too (how the The Boss never hit #1 except for when Manfred Mann covered his song)

1. WHEN DOVES CRY - PRINCE

All three of us chose this one. My guess at #2 was Tina "What's Love" (#27).

#94 Randy Bell "Don't Do Me"

No wiki page for this guy. Too obscure.

Won't reach the top 40
#44 Juice Newton "A Little Love"

#54 Jenny Burton "Strangers In A Strange World"
#55 Teddy Pendergrass & Whitney Houston "Hold Me"

No bevis & butthead this week?

Won't reach the top 40
#61 Def Leppard "Bringin' On The Heartbreak (Remix)"

A bit surprising but is this the first chart attempt or is it a re-release (the remix tag has me thinking)?

Won't reach the top 40
#78 M+M "Black Stations/White Stations"

Heard this a lot in Canada. Still do.

Won't reach the top 40
#81 Weird Al "I Lost On Jeopardy"

I know humour songs tend not to chart but this one is funny. Would have liked to see it crack the 40.

@IdRatherBeSkiing Yeah I couldn't nail down a song that really screamed "LAME" for B & B to make a face at. I almost dropped them on Lionel, but then backed down. Def Lep is a re-release after the success of Pyromania - they went back to the previous album to see if that would be a hit while the band was hot. Agree on Weird Al, not surprised but he deserved it.

@HecticArt Scorps peaked at #64. QR peaked at #51. I think I was the only kid on my block that bought that QR record. It was meh...okay, but miles below Metal Health.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the countdown but I can almost guarentee at least 1 VJ (probably Alan) will give a lecture on how MTV was 2 weeks away from opening and that is why this 'early 80s countdown' is such a mish-mash.

1. BETTE DAVIS EYES - KIM CARNES

All three of us picked this one. I made a mental note last time 1981 played that it had just hit #1 and would stay there for 9 of the next 10 weeks.

#65 Joe Dolce "Shaddap You Face"

Below my 500+ list (of fav songs ever) I have a section "for expanding beyond 500". This song is on it.

#76 Robert Gordon "Someday, Someway"

TIL Marshall Crenshaw wrote this and this guy recorded it in 1981. Then Crenshaw recorded it himself in 1982.

#80 Shamus M'Cool "American Memories"

Reportedly the rarest 45 of all time. It hit #80 for one week, then dropped off the Hot 100.

Will never make the top 40
#43 Spider "It Didn't Take Long"
#46 Rush "Tom Sawyer"
#53 38 Special "Fantasy Girl"
#55 Loverboy "The Kid Is Hot Tonite"
#57 Randy VanWarmer "Suzi"
#58 Blackfoot "Fly Away"
#61 Gino Vannelli "Nightwalker"
#65 Joe Dolce "Shaddap You Face"
#66 Smokey Robinson "You Are Forever"
#67 Brothers Johnson "The Real Thing"
#68 Jefferson Starship "Stranger"
#71 Janis Ian "Under the Covers"
#72 Dan Hartman "It Hurts To Be In Love"
#74 Styx "Nothing Ever Goes As Planned"
#76 Robert Gordon "Someday, Someway"
#80 Shamus M'Cool "American Memories"
#81 Mickey Gilley "You Don't Know Me"
#82 Stars On 45 "Medley II"
#83 Mac Davis "Secrets"
#84 Dionne Warwick "Some Changes Are for Good"
#85 Yutaka "Love Light"
#87 Gary US Bonds "Jole Blon"
#89 Jacksons "Walk Right Now"
#90 Gary O "Pay You Back With Interest"
#91 Barbra Streisand "Promises"
#92 Who "Don't Let Go The Coat"
#93 Terri Gibbs "Rich Man"
#94 Silverado "Ready For Love"
#95 Abba "On And On And On"
#96 Producers "What She Does To Me (The Diana Song)"
#97 John Denver "Some Days Are Diamonds"
#100 April Wine "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen"

#46 Rush "Tom Sawyer"
#55 Loverboy "The Kid Is Hot Tonite"
#65 Joe Dolce "Shaddap You Face"
#100 April Wine "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen"

Based upon airplay in Canada, these all should have been top 40.

Will never make the top 40
#82 Stars On 45 "Medley II"

With all the other medleys that plagued us in 1981 & 1982, I am surprised the sequel didn't chart.

17 out of 40 I could qualify as still listening to.

This version of Funkytown has to be my favorite over and above the Disco version.

4: I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (WHO LOVES ME) - WHITNEY HOUSTON

Someone chose this as their guess at #1 (my buddy doesn't tell who picked which song until later... or sometimes just forgets to).

1: ALONE - HEART

I (and someone else) chose this one. Nailed it!

But I should share I was fumbling all week to come up with an answer I had faith in, and never got there. I had seven potentials, and two of them aren't even on the Hot 100 this week. So I was kinda lucky.

Behind the scenes:
Atlantic Starr "Always" #33
Heart "Alone" #1 MY CHOICE
Lisa Lisa "Lost In Emotion" uncharted
Madonna "Who's That Girl" #26
Michael Jackson "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" uncharted
U2 "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" #3
Whitney Houston "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" #4

#50 Poison "I Want Action"
#52 INXS "Good Times"
#81 38 Special "Back To Paradise"

Shoulda made the 40

#71 Tom Kimmel "That's Freedom"

Not bad.

#83 Jon Astley "Jane's Getting Serious"

Heard this for the first time last week thanks to @IdRatherBeSkiing

#93 Bruce Willis "Under The Boardwalk"

I don't even dare find and listen to this one.

#97 Ana "Shy Boys"

Not my thing, but I'm surprised it didn't go huge. Has all the elements to succeed in 1987. And she can really sing! That note at 2:45, wow!

Won't reach the top 40
#50 Poison "I Want Action"
#52 INXS "Good Times"
#58 John Waite "These Times Are Hard For Lovers"
#59 Will To Power "Dreamin'"
#61 Cure "Why Can't I Be You"
#64 Laura Branigan "Shattered Glass"
#66 Kool & The Gang "Holiday"
#67 Jody Watley "Still A Thrill"
#70 Debbie Harry "In Love with Love"
#71 Tom Kimmel "That's Freedom"
#73 Kim Wilde "Say You Really Want Me"
#75 Breakfast Club "Kiss And Tell"
#78 Hooters "Johnny B"
#80 Rod Stewart "Twistin' the Night Away"
#81 38 Special "Back To Paradise"
#82 Regina Belle "Show Me The Way"
#83 Jon Astley "Jane's Getting Serious"
#86 Carly Simon "Give Me All Night"
#88 Depeche Mode "Strangelove"
#89 LL Cool J "I'm Bad"
#90 Whitesnake "Still of the Night"

#94 Amazulu "Montego Bay"
#95 Chicago "Niagra Falls"
