I've never liked this song, but Alien Ant Farm (who did a great cover of "Smooth Criminal" back in the day) just covered this one too. I expected to hate it, but I like it!

#89 Kingbees "My Mistake"

These are surprising to me (#89 was a favourite of mine -- maybe not too many others)

Won't reach the top 40
#79 Gary Burbank with Band McNally "Who Shot JR?"
If this didn't crack the top 40 then, the band is doomed. JR was all anyone was talking about in 1980.

I don't check this thread usually, because when the countdown's on we're listening to the Casey AT40 rerun on 70's On 7. Which is dumb (the "not checking this thread" part ) because 1984-1987 was the time frame where I worked in radio.

Anyway, I was a little surprised to see that "Centerfield" & "Go For Soda" didn't make the Top 40, because we played the hell outta those records. We were technically a CHR station, but we also pulled a lotta stuff from the Rock charts. And at nights ( the shifts I was on-air ) we could be a borderline AOR station at times. Looking back, I realize we were kind of a "Jack" station waaaaaay before that was a thing. But with more of a rockin' edge to it.

And I always thought those Vanelli & Go West tracks were hits, but they just never quite got there. I don't think people were ready to accept Gino as something other than the soft rock crooner people already knew, & I dunno why Go West never broke at this point ( between the song above & "We Close Our Eyes" ).

The Men At Work song was a surprise stiff, & I'm actually surprised it got into the Top 50. I dunno why that happened...just too much time between "Cargo" & the 3rd album? ( shrugs ) I do like the song, but think the production's more dated than their earlier stuff.

"All You Zombies" was an AWFUL choice for 1st single from "Nervous Night", which was proven by the success of the next 2 singles from the album.

And I always figured "Alone Again" would make Dokken bigger than it did, but its ceiling for success always seemed to be that it would be the "Most Valuable Metal" on the "Metalshop" show, but could never break out bigger.

And them's my thoughts on THAT chart/countdown.

@MonoStereo

That was a great read about the 85 countdown

@Aaron @HecticArt

Yep I'm at 15 good.

@IdRatherBeSkiing

My problem with 1989 is that most of the big pop hits were junk, but the bottom of the 40 and below had a ton of amazing, groundbreaking material. So it's a polarizing year of bigger trash vs not-as-successful groundbreakers and trendsetters.

Classic releases from '89 that shaped the decade to come:

2 Live Crew - As Nasty As They Wanna Be
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Cure - Disintegration
Depeche Mode "Personal Jesus" CD Single (won't reach the 40 until Feb 1990)
Faith No More - The Real Thing ("Epic" won't chart until 1990)
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Pop Will Eat Itself - This Is The Day/Hour/This (later given a US deal by Trent Reznor NIN)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mother's Milk

Plus some stuff released in 1988 didn't hit the mainstream hard until 1989 (or at least I didn't hear it until then):

Danzig - Danzig
Enya - Watermark
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Living Colour - Vivid
Metallica - And Justice For All

The other good thing about 1989 (for me) was that hair bands had a second wave of greatness. I got into that scene in '83 and rode it for a couple years, but a lot of hair bands got lame around 85-88 (that's when I started getting into alternative as my.... alternative). But in '89 there was a ton of great hard rock! Too bad it only lasted a couple years.
