80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

Good 11
Okay 7
Bad 22

I was also pleasantly surprised by how many songs I liked on this 88 countdown, usually I like about 5. BTW is this the first time they've done a June 1988 countdown? They've done May, but I don't think they've done June (until now)?

36. WHEN WE KISS - BARDEUX

My first time hearing this song. It sucks. But some interesting trivia though: One of the two girls from this group later went onto gangsta rap, signing to Eazy-E's label (she said in 1990 Dr Dre punched her in the mouth and the eye), then she formed two heavy metal bands.

When she was a rapper, she dissed the other girl in Bardeux:

So how does it feel to slut your way to a deal
I don't sell my body for money or a meal
And the name I use is real
What the fuck is Acacia?
It's a name of a tree
Look up Tairrie B
You'll see the definition is Ruthless, rival, your enemy
Get off my tip, you ain't no friend to me
How you feel, you look real sick, not sexy
More like anorexic (You on that diet called crack?)
It's either that or smack 'cause your body is wack
Put a little meat on your bone
Pick up a fork and drop the microphone

19. THE FLAME - CHEAP TRICK

My guess at #1 this week.

8. I DON'T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU - FOREIGNER

I have a list of my 500 (or so) favorite songs of all time, spanning 6 decades of music. Most countdowns, none of my favorite songs of all time show up. Sometimes there's one or two. Rarely there's three or four. This one has twelve!

My guess at #1.

1. FLASHDANCE... WHAT A FEELING - IRENE CARA

What the other two guessed for #1. I lose again!

#83 Joan Armatrading "Drop the Pilot"

Surprised this only peaked at #78.

#89 Joe Walsh "Space Age Whiz Kids"
#96 Planet P "Why Me?"

#93 Eddie Rabbitt "You Can't Run From Love"
#96 Planet P "Why Me?"
#97 Walter Egan "Fool Moon Fire"
#98 Neil Diamond "Front Page Story"

That's real cool that you got a list of 500. You got me curious what kind of bands pre-1980 you favor? 60s and 70s stuff.

I love 80s music, but I was always big into the 60s and 70s music also.

My guesses at #1 (all wrong):
1. Beat It
2. Come On Eileen
3. Every Breath You Take

Will never reach the top 40
#84 U2 "New Year's Day"

A bit of a surprise. I guess U2 wasn't big enough yet.

Will never reach the top 40
#86 Dexy's Midnight Runners "The Celtic Soul Brothers"

If this has tracked a bit higher they would not have been a North American 1 hit wonder.

I wouldn't know where to begin with a list, or how to trim it down to my top 500.
Here's a chunk of my list, you can see four of them in it:
Having a list is one thing. Making the connection is another. Impressive.
126 Yes "Changes"
One of my favorite albums. Rabin is a monster.
133 Nine Inch Nails "Head Like A Hole"
This album was a game changer for me. It was massive.
140 Suicidal Tendencies "Send Me Your Money"
Love that song!
#73 Berlin "The Metro"
This would have been on my list.
#96 Planet P "Why Me?"
This is one of those great songs that I don't get to hear enough.

@Aaron Just about all of my fav artists were most successful in the 80s and/or 90s. But Fleetwood Mac and Cat Stevens stand out as probably my biggest 70s favs. However, nine of my top 20 all-time fav songs are 60s/70s - even if I only like a few songs from most of those artists. But in general, I rarely listen to 60s music, and I listen to some 70s music but not near as much as 80s 90s or 2Ks.

@HecticArt I joined a music enthusiast Facebook group about ten years back and everyone had to submit their fav 100 songs. So I did it. And since then I've expanded on it up to over 500. I have them ranked up to #310, the rest is just an unnumbered list. Each year I fiddle with the rankings based on my current tastes, and I keep the old files.

Yep. I'm that nerdy.

I left that Facebook group after about a year. The mod kept insulting me, my opinions and my choices of songs. Then he started posting (individually) every song to ever appear on a Billboard chart.

PS - 90125 and Pretty Hate Machine are two of my fav albums of all time. And agreed about "Send Me Your Money" and "Why Me?"

Here's my take on 90125. When it came out, it was a landmark album, marking a return for Yes, and a new sound. The only time I saw Yes live was on that tour.

I was mixed on the synth-sounding drums. And I don't think the overall style of music holds up as well over time, compared to earlier albums. But I understand that any album that hits you at an influential time in your life, will be special.

I feel about 91025 the same way I feel about Rush 'Hold Your Fire'. For both bands, their previous work in the 70s was a lot more organic and the songs had more complexity. But I still like 90125/Big Generator (and Hold Your Fire) more because (1) lyrically they connect with me more, and (2) it's the perfect sweet spot between being "out-there-super-proggy" and "just pure pop". Those albums retain the character of the band, and break ground in their own ways, but also step closer to the mainstream just enough to allow for mass appeal.

That, and sometimes the longer, prog-orchestral, extended jams are just too much work. They can require too much attention sometimes and a shorter song that just gets to the point of it, really hits the spot.

#96 David Lee Roth "Stand Up"
#97 Underworld "Underneath The Radar"
#99 Lonzo And World Class Wreckin Kru "Turn Off The Lights"

Here's my dos centavos. :)

39. I'M STILL SEARCHING - GLASS TIGER
I didn't realize they cracked the 40 more than once.

36. WHEN WE KISS - BARDEUX
@sadchild - I remembered When We Kiss from WTBS Night Tracks. The song didn't bother me, but it sounds like an extended 1-900 commercial to me now. :-)
I didn't know Tairrie B was connected to Bardeux until researching the group. Her video for "Murder She Wrote" was heavily played on The Box in 1990, but it didn't make much of a splash.
Another song by Bardeux, "I love to Bass", appeared on one of the “Will never reach the top 40” list with the new woman.

31. UNDER THE MILKY WAY - THE CHURCH
A personal favorite.

8. I DON'T WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT YOU - FOREIGNER
@sadchild - Beavis and Butthead strikes again! It's interesting how bands like Foreigner, Heart, and Starship really morphed to conform to 80s pop constructs.

Will never reach the top 40

#46 Nu Shooz "Should I Say Yes?"
Interesting to see them attempting to claw towards the 40.

#68 10,000 Maniacs "Like The Weather"
This video was played on VH1 quite a bit.

#79 Tony Toni Tone "Little Walter"
Debut song and a #1 R&B hit.

#84 Wet Wet Wet "Wishing I Was Lucky"
I heard this on a Top of the Pops episode and it quickly became a favorite (UK #6).

#99 Lonzo And World Class Wreckin Kru "Turn Off The Lights"
@sadchild - Ironically Tairrie B and Dr. Dre were in the Hot 100 at the same time. He was a part of the World Class Wreckin Kru before NWA was formed. Also, this song was played on the Quiet Storm in my city.

@seasalt43

I lol'ed at "it sounds like an extended 1-900 commercial to me now." Perfect description!

Nice catch with #99 and #36 - ships passing in the night that would later crash into each other!

Glass Tiger hit the top 40 four times actually, something even I didn't realize. I knew both top 10s "Don't Forget" and "Someday", but I just assumed this was their 3rd and final. Nope, they also have a song "I Will Be There" that made it too. I couldn't hum it to ya, but apparently it exists.

Every line the guy sang ended with an "ah."
"Don't forget em when I'm gone-ah"
"My heart will break-ah"

I'll never listen to that song and not think about that!

That crash was literal! Dr. Dre was accused of striking a female entertainment reporter too. I don't know how he got away with all of that.

That's good stuff regarding Glass Tiger. I listed to "Someday" and remembered it. The other two were 30 top hits so they got by me. 40-30 can be filled with gems sometimes. :-)

#83 Joan Armatrading "Drop the Pilot"

Surprised this only peaked at #78.

#89 Joe Walsh "Space Age Whiz Kids"
#96 Planet P "Why Me?"

These two are also on my fav songs of all time list! 1983 is my fav year of pop music.

#97 Walter Egan "Fool Moon Fire"
#98 Neil Diamond "Front Page Story"

@sadchild – I love the list! I never thought about ranking my favorite songs.

30. THAT'S LOVE - JIM CAPALDI
I didn't remember this one, but not bad. I didn't realize he was in Traffic either.

Will never reach the top 40

#51 New Edition "Candy Girl"
Debut single. The Jackson “sound” was a driving force for this single. It hit #1 US R&B and #1 UK.

#55 Thompson Twins "Love On Your Side"
I could have easily have seen this in the top 40.

#85 Maze "Love Is the Key"
Interesting to see Maze in the Hot 100. They had a lot of success on the R&B chart, but never a top 40 hit.

#80 Red Rockers "China"
This one was new for me too. I love the hidden gems.

#91 Nona Hendryx "Keep It Confidential"
I was surprised to see Nona Hendryx in the 100. She had sporadic chart success. She had an edgy look/sound. She was also a part of the group Labelle in the 70s.
