80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

I was reading the farewell posts over there, $1200 to run a server? Monthly??

That's why I'm kinda surprised this place is still around. Having been a mod at a few message boards in the past, I know they aren't cheap to run. Especially in this day and age when you can just create a Facebook group or a subreddit and call it a day.

We aren't as expensive to run as XMFan was.
They had a lot more bells and whistles, and a lot more traffic.
With their own servers, I can see where it all added up.
My hat is off to Ryan for taking all of that on for so long.
It's sad to see them go. I never pictured us being rival sites, just different with the same goal of bringing people together to talk about music. Hopefully some more of the XMFan people find their way over here to continue the conversations.

I'm not registered over there, like I was at xm411 (their rival site) otherwise I'd advertise liberally. Maybe some of us that are can before they shut down.

27 Good
4 Bad
5 Eh!
4 Never heard before

Overall not a bad countdown, although the later years in the 80's didn't see quite the diversity in songs that you saw during the early 80's. Less Country tunes and more AC and R&B along with Pop and Rock.

I thought about it, but since I rarely ever posted there, it seemed a bit rude for me to do it.

"And now here is me with a look at the #24 song on today's countdown." Thank you, me. Chuck Berry had a 1956 hit with Roll Over Beethoven. Falco decided to give equal time to Mozart. Falco, born Johann Holzel in Austria, told an interviewer in 1986 he decided to write a song about Mozart because he loved the way Amadeus director Milos Forman "translated the rococo person in today's terms." Falco said, "If Mozart were alive today, he wouldn't be making classical music. He'd be an international pop star." Well, that's debatable – but Rock Me Amadeus went to number one in Austria, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the US and the UK. In five other countries, it was a top-ten hit. Falco died in a car crash in 1998. He was 40.

By the way, in 1981 Falco wrote and recorded the original version of Der Kommissar. An English-language version by After The Fire became a #5 US hit in 1983.

Good 12
Okay 9
Bad 19

Heard the previous week back in 2016. Old comments are here.

13. ON MY OWN - PATTI LaBELLE & MICHAEL McDONALD

12. KISS - PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION
11. LIVE TO TELL - MADONNA
3. GREATEST LOVE OF ALL - WHITNEY HOUSTON
1. WEST END GIRLS - PET SHOP BOYS

I went with a gut instinct this week. I came up with 5 potentials and predicted Falco & Prince already peaked, and Whitney & Madonna hadn't peaked yet, so PSB would be #1. And I nailed it! I was right about all freakin' five predictions! Pretty damn surprised by (and proud of) that. I will add, however, I can't believe I didn't think of Robert Palmer though. Shoulda known that one! My friend's son went with Whitney. His old roommate went with Prince.

#82 Magazine 60 "Don Quichotte"

First wave needs to add this train wreck. Just for the quirk factor.

#83 Bonnie Tyler "If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man)"

Written by Desmond Child. He says he then brought it to Bon Jovi and it got rewritten as "You Give Love A Bad Name".

#49 Psychedelic Furs "Pretty In Pink"
#91 Platinum Blonde "Somebody, Somewhere"
#92 INXS "Listen Like Thieves"
#100 Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime (Live)"

This week's surprises. The Platinum Blonde & Psychedelic Furs ones still get's airplay up here.

Agree with all of the "shoulda been a top 40" except Platinum Blonde, but only because I've never heard it until this moment.

I'm playing it now... Its chorus reminds me of another song but I can't put my finger on it. Oh wait, it reminds me of the verses of Kiss "Tears Are Falling". Replace "Somebody somewhere will change your mind" with "You look at me with your eyes in tears".

Platinum Blonde no doubt gets play up here for being Canadian.

1. BETTE DAVIS EYES - KIM CARNES

All three of us picked this for #1. And if they do 1981 again in the next 9 weeks, we'll probably pick it again. I know Stars On 45 bumped it for one of those weeks, but I couldn't tell you which one.

#77 Jacksons "Can You Feel It"

Looks like a very expensive music video (for 1981).

Intriguing. Top ten in Germany and The Netherlands.
