80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

Good 8
Okay 18
Bad 14

A solid countdown, but loaded with just 'okay' songs.

23. LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY - DENIECE WILLIAMS

So... I came up with four potential candidates for this week's number one:

Against All Odds #1
Footloose #2
Hello #3
Let's Hear It For The Boy

Why oh why did I go with Let's Hear It For The Boy?

13. TO ALL THE GIRLS I'VE LOVED BEFORE - WILLIE NELSON & JULIO IGLESIAS

Against All Odds was the theme song of a Jeff Bridges movie called.....ummm.....Against All Odds. The song netted Phil Collins a Grammy award for best pop male vocal. The song was also nominated for an Oscar. Collins rearranged his tour schedule so he would be available to sing the song during the 57th annual Academy Awards ceremony but he never received an invitation. Producers Gregory Peck and Larry Gelbart explained that they wanted "variety," not recording artists. So who sang Against All Odds during the telecast? Broadway actress, dancer and choreographer Ann Reinking. And she didn't even sing it live. She recorded the song and then lip-synched to it. A reporter asked Collins what he thought of her performance. He kept his answer short 'n' simple: "It was awful."

Wow, I hadn't seen the Illegal Alien video since 1983. I just watched it again on YouTube. The video was directed by British filmmaker Stuart Orme – and those three illegal aliens really look familiar. I agree with Mister Hectic: Genesis would never be able to get away with making such a video in 2020. And while we're on the subject, whatever happened to the Frito Bandito?

Even Phil Collins, a man who has become synonymous with political correctness and sensitivity in the music business, can't escape scrutiny with this catchy but undeniably offensive single by Genesis. He's attempting to tell the story of a Mexican reduced to sneaking across the border when his paperwork is denied, but even if he wasn't pimping out his sister in the bridge (part of the song that was edited from the single version), Collins' fake-Latino accent is worse than any Speedy Gonzales cartoon. And then there's the video, where he dons a black wig and mustache, and brings a litany of negative Mexican stereotypes to life.

Rock’s Most Politically Incorrect Songs

How could they have omitted Pat Boone's 1962 #6 hit Speedy Gonzales? It features "la-la-la's" from Robin Ward and comments from Mel Blanc, who voiced the Warner Bros. character Speedy Gonzales (and almost all the other Warner Bros. characters too).

Now I know where Elton and Bernie got the idea for those crazy la-la's in "Crocodile Rock"!

I love Mel Blanc, not just for Looney Toons but Jack Benny and just about everything else he did.

What is you guys thoughts on the 80s on 8 playlist when the countdowns are not on? I feel like every other song or every third song, I find myself thinking "please not this song again".

When the countdowns are not on, I think I spend more time getting my 80s fix from the First Wave channel.

I find it not a channel I keep it on for long periods. It usually is playing a good song or 2 then it doesn't and I move on.

I don't listen to any channel for a long period of time (except for when the VJ40 is on). I use the tune-mix button. My radio is storing the music from 18 channels (presets A1-9 & B1-9) and then presents each song in the order it was received. If I don't want to hear that song, I hit >> and it moves to the next song (from a different channel). I keep skipping forward until a song comes on I want to hear.

I've got 70s, 80s, 90s, Pulse, Pop2K, Rock The Bells, Rock Bar, Octane, First Wave, Turbo, Lithium, XMU, Covers Channel and a few others.

Tune-mix doesn't include anything from the A0 and B0 presets, so I have Stern on one and Classic Radio (Abbott & Costello, Jack Benny, etc) on the other.

I leave First Wave on until the first Smiths song comes on. Then I'll switch to something else for a while.
You're really annoyed by such an inoffensive band. I wonder why?

I don't think the decades channels play the classic rock that Classic Vinyl/Rewind or Deep Cuts plays. Am I right?

That sounds like a cool feature. Not enough to give up integration but a cool feature.

They write good songs, and have made a major contribution to music, but Morrissey is such a whiny depressing sounding singer. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard. That said, I'm fine with Geddy Lee. Hey, I'm a complicated guy.

OK, I'll accept that. It's just not a complaint I've heard before.

I love Radiohead, but I have friends who think Thom York's whiny-ness is unbearable; and I can see that, especially on their older stuff.

I used to really like Red Hot Chili Peppers, but between my friends who can't stand the whining, and the fact that "classic alternative" stations played them to death, I can no longer handle them.

I have friends who hate Steely Dan, both their music and the way they're "overrated". It's one of my very favorite bands.

I CAN'T STAND Mumford & Sons. I hate everything about them. That same monotonous guitar strumming - Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut, Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut, Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut, Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut, Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut, Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut, Dahhhhh-Dah-Dut. At the end of every vocal phrase, he goes up a half-step during the last note. He sings calmly, but then bursts into uncontrolled yelling. Then he does it over and over. The songs are about nothing, and full of meaningless platitudes. They wear faux period clothing. The same banjo picking shows up at some point in every song, and it's always supposed to be awe-inspiring every time. Marcus Mumford has a shitty voice; it's weak and flinty. Listen to him covering Dylan's Kansas City, it's like nails on a chalkboard. People who like them are douches.

But hey, that's just my humble opinion.

The Smiths I'm fine with (How Soon is Now is a personal favorite), it's Morrissey's solo stuff without Johnny Marr I can't get into. As a guitar player myself I appreciate his contribution to the band. Especially on the aforementioned song. Plus Morrissey is kind of a dick!
