The Captain Of Her Heart reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Double – pronounced doo-BLAY – the first Swiss act to have a top-40 hit in the United States. The song also reached #4 on the adult contemporary chart and was a top-ten hit in France, Ireland, Italy, Germany and the UK. Double was guitarist/vocalist Kurt Maloo and drummer/keyboardist Felix Haug. They had previously been in a band called Ping Pong. They shot three videos for The Captain Of Her Heart. Denise Richards, then 15 years old, played a punk girl in one of them. She has since appeared in more than a hundred movies and television series and is currently a regular on The Bold & The Beautiful. Haug died in 2004. Maloo recorded a new version of The Captain Of Her Heart for his 2006 CD Loopy Avenue. It features German-born jazz vocalist Pat Appleton. Hurry and listen!

Ooooooooh...this 'un's right in my sweet spot. This is a couple months before the station I worked at was sold & turned into a country station, so I remember playing the hell outta a bunch of these songs.

I think I still have the promo vinyl of that Double album around here somewhere - blue vinyl! I wonder if it's worth anything...

( checks eBay )

NOPE!!!!!!!!!!

Weirdly, I don't recognize that Mike + The Mechanics title. I suppose if I heard it, I'd go "oh yeah, that song". Probably buried it in my brain due to my 1000000% lack of interest in Mike + The friggin' Mechanics.

I swear we played 47 different tracks off that Steve Winwood album. Man, that thing was a monster.

Good to see The Outfield in there - I always thought they were underrated, & they were a delight when I met them ( our station presented Starship in concert at one point, & The Outfield opened ). I remember that they were blown away by the notion of practically unending backstage pizza. I chalked this up to them being from the UK, & it always reminds me of the old Bill Hicks joke about how the food there sucks ( "You don't boil pizza!!!" ).

I could literally write on & on about this chart, it brings back so many memories. It's also a real reminder that we were a rock-leaning Top 40 station, because there's several R&B/dance tracks on there that we NEVER played ( some did get aired on our adult contemporary-ish AM station, though ).

That Was Then, This Is Now reached #20 on the Hot 100 and #24 on the adult contemporary chart. It was one of three "new" Monkees songs – the others were Anytime Anyplace Anywhere and a remake of Paul Revere & The Raiders' Kicks – included on the 1986 compilation CD Then & Now...The Best Of The Monkees. That Was Then, This Is Now was written by Vance Brescia, lead singer of a New York City band called The Mosquitos. They recorded it in 1985 as the title track of a five-song EP. The "new" version was initially credited to The Monkees. Later pressings were more truthful and listed the artists as "Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork of The Monkees." As for the other two "new" Monkees songs, yep, they too were just Micky and Peter.

This weeks surprises. Honeymoon Suite is Canadian so maybe thats why it got more play her (then and now). Spirit in the Sky got a lot of play then. I'm surprised it didn't do top 40.

This is the countdown you'd probably hear over the PA system in a Walmart while shopping. Not a whole lot redeemable here. As much as I like the 80's, the late eighties was the beginning of the end, it was pretty much from close to this point that you started seeing Hair Metal. Then Grunge swooped in to save the day in the 90's.

That was terrible then, and even now.

Weird Fun Fact : one of the people/characters in the "Yankee Rose" video ( the cheezy "fuggetaboutit" guy with the twins ) was the college roommate of the guy who was the Program Director of the station I worked at. He was Roth's manager, Pete Angelus.

Little surprised by the non-hits above, as they were all songs that made it to at least Medium rotation on my station. And if I remember right ( always a dicey proposition ) "Touch And Go" was Emerson, Lake, & Powell - not Palmer.

Here's my two cents on the 40 this week:

37. THE CAPTAIN OF HER HEART - DOUBLE
I love the backgound information on Double. I found a great track that was released in 1987.

35. HANGING ON A HEART ATTACK - DEVICE
I didn't remember this one for some reason.

31. MAN SIZE LOVE - KLYMAXX
I'm surprised this made it this high.

25. TAKE IT EASY - ANDY TAYLOR
24. ONE STEP CLOSER TO YOU - GAVIN CHRISTOPHER
I think these were there only top 40 appearances.

23. FRIENDS & LOVERS - GLORIA LORING/CARL ANDERSON
I may need to borrow Beavis & Butthead for a moment...

21. DIGGING YOUR SCENE - BLOW MONKEYS
One of my favorite 80s UK bands.

12. THE EDGE OF HEAVEN - GEORGE MICHAEL
This was Wham's last to 40 song.
