Had never heard of Bucks Fizz before. Apparently they won Eurovision 1981 by looking like Abba and sounding like The Brady Bunch covering The Monkees while dancing like they're at a sock hop.

Some of the strangest stuff hits #1 in the UK:

They were a new one for me too. I'm pretty sure I first saw them on an old Top of the Pops episode. They covered "Talking in your Sleep" by the Romantics too.

Your description is spot on!!! LOL!!!

The UK chart could be crazy at times. It's intriguing to me to see how different the chart was from the US.

This is probably the strangest song I've seen to hit number one in the UK.

I don't remember this song, but it's on this weekend's countdown.

l kinda like it, and think it could be a song played for today's music. Like Alt Nation.

@seasalt43 I've always liked that Joe Dolce song, ever since I was a kid. Almost forty years later, my son and I now reference it all the time. "Whatsa matta you? HEY!"

Good 5
Okay 8
Bad 27

Barfola. Heard this exact countdown in 2016.

35. HEY NINETEEN - STEELY DAN

Nina hates saying 'me so horny' ... but will say dildo?

26. I BELIEVE IN YOU - DON WILLIAMS

My wife: "I hate this song!"

15. NEVER BE THE SAME - CHRISTOPHER CROSS

My son started singing "Last Christmas" along to the intro of this song. It fit too well.

13. TELL IT LIKE IT IS - HEART

12. YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELING - HALL & OATES

Alan said 'Until recently, this was the most played song of 20th century'. What could possibly have happened RECENTLY that made it no longer the most played song of the previous century??

4. (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON

My friend's roommate's guess for #1.

1. LADY - KENNY ROGERS

My guess and my friend's son's guess for #1. Woohoo!

#42 Bob Seger "The Horizontal Bop"
#43 Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On"
#44 Babys "Turn And Walk Away" (#42 peak)

Three songs in a row that came so close to the top 40... but couldn't quite get there.

#91 Star Wars Intergalactic Droid Choir & Chorale "What Can You Get A Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns A Comb)"

Aka Meco (the disco Star Wars guy). So every December I torture my family and office mate with this song and its b-side "R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas". Back in the 90s, I found the 7" at a record store and bought it for a couple bucks, knowing that a pre-fame Jon Bongiovi sang the lead vox on the R2-D2 song at his uncle's famous NY recording studio Power Station. My friend's wife is a huge Bon Jovi fan, so one day I mentioned that I had this 7" to him, and does his wife want it. She told him Jon never sang a Star Wars Christmas song!! No way!! Ridiculous!! (I'm paraphrasing, I wasn't there) He passed the basic idea along to me and I was like, okay whatever. A few days later, he asked, "My wife found out it's true and wants to know if you're still giving that record away?" So I gave it to them.

Won't reach the top 40
#42 Bob Seger "The Horizontal Bop"
#43 Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On"

#50 Marcy Levy/Andy Gibb "Help Me!"
#52 Pointer Sisters "Could I Be Dreaming"
#53 Earth Wind & Fire "You"
#59 Queen "Need Your Loving Tonight"
#62 Dionne Warwick "Easy Love"
#66 Teddy Pendergrass "Love T.K.O."

These ones surprise and don't surprise me. Based upon airplay in Canada then or airplay on radio or satrad now these should all be top 40 hits. I think I have mentioned that the drummer for the Kings (until after this song was released) goes to my church.

My two cents for the week (below): The 1980 and 1981 countdowns are interesting in general because they're post-disco and pre-MTV.

40. NEVER KNEW LOVE LIKE THIS BEFORE - STEPHANIE MILLS
The was one of two appearances for Stephanie. She had a string of R&B hits throughout the 80s.

36. THE WANDERER - DONNA SUMMER
Interesting to see Donna start to step away from disco.

35. HEY NINETEEN - STEELY DAN
Great song!!! Can't go wrong with these guys.

33. DREAMING - CLIFF RICHARD
28. SUDDENLY - CLIFF RICHARD & OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN
Interesting to see two Cliff Richard tracks on the countdown. He was much more popular in the UK.

32. I LOVE A RAINY NIGHT - EDDIE RABBITT
This popped up on a friend's Pandora recently and I have forgotten how good this song is.

25. CELEBRATION - KOOL & THE GANG
This was the song for the 1982 Cardinals winning the World Series. It was played non-stop.

21. THEME FROM THE DUKES OF HAZARD - WAYLON JENNINGS
I watched this series every week as a kid and used to sing the song at the beginning of the show.

20. THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE
I was unaware that is was a remake until recently.

19. EVERYBODY'S GOT TO LEARN SOMETIMES - THE KORGIS
I didn't remember this one either, but it's not bad.

17. WHIP IT - DEVO
I think this was released later for some reason.

13. TELL IT LIKE IT IS - HEART
@sadchild - I'm glad Beavis made an appearance.

3. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST- QUEEN
This got radio airplay on R&B stations as well.

1. LADY - KENNY ROGERS
Hmmm...has Beavis ever made an appearance for a number #1 record?

Won't reach the top 40

#66 Teddy Pendergrass "Love T.K.O."
This was a quiet storm classic. Another guy made a version around the same time which was interesting.

#82 Supertramp "Breakfast In America"
Underrated band.

#84 Rupert Holmes "Morning Man"
Rupert was fighting against the one hit wonder moniker at this point.
