#84 Rupert Holmes "Morning Man"
Rupert was fighting against the one hit wonder moniker at this point.

Yet his second hit Him had already removed that moniker. In theory anyways. When the first hit is a monster people forget about a second normal hit. The Knack are in the same boat.

33. DREAMING - CLIFF RICHARD
28. SUDDENLY - CLIFF RICHARD & OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN
Interesting to see two Cliff Richard tracks on the countdown. He was much more popular in the UK.

Third best selling artist of all time in the UK, only behind Elvis and The Beatles.

25. CELEBRATION - KOOL & THE GANG
This was the song for the 1982 Cardinals winning the World Series. It was played non-stop.

...and it's been playing non-stop ever since. Any time I go to a wedding, corporate event with dancing, bat miztvah, etc etc etc etc this song plays. I like it but I'm dead sick of it.

I agree with you completely and my statement was inaccurate. There's a clip of Rupert performing Him on YouTube that’s one of my favorites. Also, he had another song "Answering Machine" that made the 40 in June of 1980.

Your response brings up a philosophical question. How many hits does it take to steer the focus from a monster hit to the full catalog of an artist's work? This is what I’m thinking he may have been fighting against.

Here's a lost gem from Rupert. I don't have the backstory, but it looks like earlier work that was released once his popularity rose.

I didn't know that about Cliff. Very interesting.

I wonder if Beavis can award a Lifetime Achievement award for Celebrate...

The remake did indeed suck. In 1986 I bought the Police compilation CD Every Breath You Take: The Singles and it included the sucky version of Don't Stand So Close To Me, not the original. The 1980 version appeared six years later on the CD The Police Greatest Hits, which pretty much duplicated the earlier compilation. At least 32 artists have recorded the song. Here is a 1999 version by Off The Beat, the University of Pennsylvania choral group:

When the Don't Stand 86 remake came out, I thought it was okay (but not good). Then I didn't hear it for a couple decades, it wasn't even included on Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings which I bought (not actually complete then, is it?). When I finally did hear it again, I thought it sucked and I haven't listened since.

EDIT: I just saw on Wikipedia that Don't Stand 86 is listed as the last track on Message In A Box. Discogs says the same thing. But I'd swear it's not on my copy. I'll have to check when I get home.

Amazon – you've heard of Amazon, right? – lists all the Message In A Box tracks and Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 is indeed the last song. The reviewer calls it "a dismal remake." I agree.

Listened for the first time in prolly 15 years.
The problem isn't that the remake is total garbage, it’s that the original is so awesome that they never should have tried to redo it. If it was a Wonderful Life and the first Don’t Stand hadn’t been recorded, we would think the 86 version is OK.
