The World's Ugliest Car

What's with the barbecue burner on the front of this thing?
 
sorry for the low quality pic, but I snapped this with my cell phone camera while waiting at a stoplight in Seattle. Every time I'm in Seattle I see this truck on my drive in to work. It's a Dodge Ram single cab. It's got a horrible wing on the back, a custom black stripe on the back with some words that I don't remember, silver window tint, and some sort of funky bumper guard up front. This time I noticed that he had added what looks like a 3 foot lift in the back (probably hydros) and gigantic mudflaps. And as an added bonus the front passenger wheel looks like it's running a spare tire/rim. When I saw it I had to risk an accident and take a picture. I only wish I had my regular camera with me...

The price is certainly right and so is the MPG there is little doubt about that. But for me those would not be the only considerations. I've seen 2 or 3 of them around town here and this is a rual area where parking isn't a problem. When I considered the xB for example, not only was the box design unique, but it offered the ability to haul larger items in the rear area and if needed carry up to 4 additional passengers. The MPG certainly isn't going to be as good, but when considering the difference in MPG and the limits that it places on your due to the size of the vehicle, the Smart car just doesn't make sense for me personally. However, I do agree they are likely good cars and with the crash test good on them, that is a huge plus. But again it all boils down to needs vs cost and MPG. If I didn't need to consider those other alternatives and only consider the cost vs MPG it would be a no brainer.

By the way when I leave the club with that big 52 inch TV in the back of my xB, I'll wave as I am leaving the store while you setup delivery of yours because your little Smart Car, well it can't haul much of anything but you and a passenger. hehehehe

Honestly if that car works for your I think it is GREAT !

Not only is parking tight in the city DAB, but I also live in a 3 story walk up. Delivery is a must for all items.

Maybe after I get the car I will drive down and pick you up and bring you to the city.... might even use a full tank of gas :p When was the last time you saw a skyscraper ?

Actually I travel into Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Shreveport, Houston and Dallas all the time, but you would never catch me living in a city. I hate freaking cities.

I want to be able to go into my backyard, build a fire in my fire pit, sit around an breath in some fresh air while looking at the night sky. The stars are beautiful, much more pretty to look at than the bright lights in a big city. I have dog kennels (raise dogs) and I plant a garden every year and do landscaping in my yard. When is the last time you stuck your hand into some nice dark rich top soil or did some yearly tree and bush pruning. Now that is not a life I've give up for city living. I need to be able to haul my top soil and new rose bushes or other plants, not to mention dog food in 55 pound bags. I can't be getting that stuff deliverd it would cost me a fortune. :o

Isn't it amazing how folks can have such different lifestyles, sort of like we have different taste and needs in cars. The cool thing is I live close enough to get all the same services that one would get in a city, but I am not restricted by the city life.
 
So if wouldn't be hard to put a bike in the back of one of those? I do a lot of biking in places where I have to actually drive the bike to the place where I'm doing it. I must have a vehicle that can carry a bike, and I don't like those ugly bike racks.

No, you could probably put a couple of bikes back there if you needed too. The amount of room back there is amazing, people don't realize until they get inside this thing how roomy it really is.
 
I'm looking at Scion's in a whole new light. I used to think they were ugly, but in some ways it's nice to see something "different" from the common streamlined look that most cars have today.
 
My cars were ugly.

I went for Acura Integras. UGLY to me. And I bought 3 of them!! All new. (since the 1980's)

I loved the performance, but I hated the look. I really wanted a long hood, and I hated the look of the "cab-forward" design. It's ugly.

I still don't like it.

It grows on you. When I first saw an xB, I thought it was odd looking in an attempt to be "hip". Now I recognize it's an optimal shape for a passenger car that won't be driving over 100 mph. Wind resistance is high, but it maximizes the volume over the wheelbase. It's cheap, comes with more standard features than anything in its class and price range, gets reasonable mileage, it doesn't bore me. I came close to buying a Corolla, and every day I'm grateful that I clicked around on edmunds.com to see what else I could get for the same money.
 
Yeah I do remember seeing the Scion xB back in 2004 when they were first released and saying man those are some kind of ugly. But I am telling you once you drive one and experience it, that goes away quickly. This is one versatile vehicle!

I love my element, its very versatile too, plus its AWD.
