Mrs. O'Leary's cow did
not kick over a lantern and did
not start the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Catherine O'Leary was asleep in bed when the fire began at 9 PM October 8 and there was no lantern in the barn. The official cause has never been determined but there is speculation a group of men were gambling inside the barn and one of them accidentally started the fire. In 1997, a Chicago City Council committee officially exonerated the cow:
