The term "billy club" dates from 1848 and originally was what burglars called a crowbar. Prime Minister Robert Peel established London's first Police Department in 1829. The officers were called "bobbies" in his honor and in the 1850s their truncheons became known as "billy clubs." I don't know why, though. The truncheons were made of wood, not metal, and they weren't used for prying windows open. As for the "old timey word," try this:
