The Musical Instrument Thread

I got out my bass last night. It felt good to play on the big four string. Mostly I just played "Belong" for about an hour, and corrected a tab on Ultimate Guitar. Mike Mills is just running down the G major scale in first position, dammit! Third fret, not fourth fret, on the A string!

I posted the correction, but the guy who wrote it posted the original in 2010.

I could post a whole tab, I suppose, but I'm not certain enough about some of the walkups and lead-ins, and there are a few ways you can play them that sound right. And I imagine Mike Mills has played the part differently at different times, since it's a pretty easy bass line, and you know, it gets old after 100 shows. A guy has to mix it up. The fans aren't expecting the album cut like at a Rush concert.

But my correction was correcting what was definitely a wrong fucking note, which any bass player ought to know, since the bass player has to know his keys, scales and the whole fretboard. He can't just go all wang dang doodle squealie tremolo and wow the chicks like the lead guitarist. :D

I started to learn Fire Woman last night.

Smokestack lightning.

The Cult is great. Every song sounds the same, which is to say, awesome.

Sometimes I prefer a video lesson when learning a song. There are some good teachers out there, like Justin Sandercoe, Marty Schwartz and this dude who specializes in the Stones. But sometimes a "lesson" is some dude just playing the song...as if I can see whether his ring finger is on the third or the fourth string through his big fat hand.

Basically 'Trouble Me' is Bmaj,G and D played throughout the song. Should be fairly simple.

I had a friend in high school that called 10,000 Maniacs "Natalie Merchant and the Holiday Inn Backup Band."

But I think "The Wishing Chair" rocks, especially this song:

If something is wrong, it's wrong. Alternate fingerings, chord inversions and whatnot are all part of the game.

Wang Dand Doodle.....All night long. All night long.

Friggin Koko is a goddess.
I've got this one on my Atlantic Blues box set.

I've decided I'm hopelessly unqualified to determine whether or not Alex Lifeson is a good guitarist. I mean, I'm sure he's good. I just don't possess the skills to determine if he's great.

Also, I doodled a little with the into to "Wanted Dead or Alive" this evening on my tele. I fooled with it when I first started playing, but now it's much easier. It's really an acoustic piece, but I'm really into gain and distortion recently.

I've got the qualifications. He's not great, he's freakin great. Its so much more than just shredding, he's got melody, composition and structure in control. They say Myles Davis could play silence better than anyone. Its all about leaving room for the music and the other musicians. Alex knows silence, and he knows how to wail. Work on Limelight for a while. The chord structure and arpeggios are beyond brilliant. If you can't find a good tab, I'll send you one.

Send me one.

I've been reading a few interviews of well-known guitar players recently and their knowledge of the instrument and of music theory is remarkable. A saw an interview with Vernon Reid and he used "mixolydian" and "Nietzsche" in the same sentence. Whoa. I thought he was all dreadlocks and noise.

Reading Keith Richards' "Life," too. The guy knows his shit.

New subject: I've noticed that every instructional video for making pinch harmonics has the gain on the amp turned up to 11. I have a preset on my amp that's kind of a metal setting, and when I crank the gain, pinch harmonics are loud and easy. But on a clean setting, the harmonics are quiet, much quieter than the fundamental. Is that normal? Should I be able to make a pinch harmonic squeal without a lot of gain?

This video is a good example, and it's funny:
