The Musical Instrument Thread

This was a cheapest of the cheap. Even if it was in great shape and playable, it wouldn't have been worth more than $20.00. Plastic parts, no inlays, decals at the sound hole and headstock. The soundboard bowed out at the bridge, which had separated from the body, and the dovetail cracked at the heel. It was delaminated enough it never would have taken full string tension.

Nice axe! The line 6's that Jon is talking about are pretty solid for the dollar.
Every guitar player I've talked to has said the same thing. They're hard to find locally (I haven't checked Guitar Center yet) but I'll probably order online like I'll eventually do with the strat.

Then why'd you burn it? Something that crappy calls for explosives.

Picked up Keith Richards' bio "Life" at Barnes and Noble today for $7.98 in the bargain bin. I want to read what he says about open G tuning.

So, I've been playing some Keef stuff and I realized I was having trouble barring chords on my electric, which is weird, because the strings are light and the action is low. I became enamored with the notion of a Telecaster, remembering the other day when I tried one in the store that it was an easy player. So I stopped by after work and played both a Squier Affinity and Standard Tele, and man, they play like butter. Tuned 'em both to open G and even played them on the same model amp I have. Awesome. I also realized what a small guitar a Tele is. My semi-hollow is a horse in comparison. I can reach the fretboard with much more ease on a Tele.

The shop was open until eight, so I brought my semi-hollow buy to see what I could get for a trade, hoping that I could make an even swap, the Affinity for my guitar. The guy at the shop--really nice guy--looked it over and called the owner. He said the best they could do was $125 in trade in value because they three semi-hollows hanging on the wall already and they don't move fast. The kid felt bad, but it was the owner's call. I had to pass.

So, I'm obsessing on teh Interwebz tonight and finally decided to say "eff it," and I bought a Squier Standard Telecaster from Elderly Instruments in Lansing, MI. It's got a full-size Tele body (the Affinity is a bit thin) and alnico pickups, as opposed to ceramic in the Affinity. It also has string through body like the Fenders. Classic Keef/Bruce Springsteen butterscotch.

Nothing fancy--just old school and very playable. More here: SQUIER® STANDARD SERIES TELECASTER® - Elderly Instruments

I'll sell my current git on eBay and get about $200 for it, and I have an old Sony Handcam on the shelf that I haven't used in eight years that will fetch $50.

Tele's are a great little guitar. If I wasn't so enamored with the Strats I'd probably go for one of those.

I almost bought a Tele originally when I got my electric in 2012, but the same store I went to yesterday had only Affinities (the low-end, which probably would have been fine in retrospect) and Custom Vibes, which were like $399. The Standard--the middle ground--was what I wanted, and they were out. By the time they got more, I had bought the semi-hollow at another store.

I've tried to do business with these SOBs three times--the time mentioned above, another time when I bought my bass and they didn't have what I wanted in stock and wouldn't come down off any prices on other stuff (hello, Amazon), and just now when they wouldn't come up on their trade offer. Fuck, help a brother out. Make a customer already.

I've heard good things about Elderly Music. The lads (they're all geezers) on the Acoustic Guitar Forum rave about them. They set-up your git in house with their crew before it ships, and right now shipping is free on a lot of stuff. The lads (did I mention they're all like 80?) say their guitars arrive lean, mean and ready to play. I hope so...

The Tele is here. It's great. It's a very small, light guitar. Here's me looking like a dork. (Moreso than usual)

White man overbite? Really?
Rosewood fretboard not maple for that classic bright sound?
I think it'll be more flexible tonally with the rosewood, but I just wondered.

Looks like a fun axe.

Oh, get a chord with a 90 degree on one end. It'll save you from having to replace the jack.

It's mandatory, but only once.

Maple fretboard=back of the neck ;)

Do really believe that fretboard wood has any effect on tone?

Looks like a fun axe.

I didn't buy it to torture myself. Only my wife.

Already have one!

Getting used to the thinner tone after two and a half years of humbuckers. The neck and the fretboard are great, however, and the size and weight are awesome. It's a very small guitar. Very, very playable.

Smart.

Aaaahhhhh, reversible like a quality belt. Smart.

Are you getting smart with me boy?

I didn't buy it to torture myself. Only my wife.
Let me know how that works out for you.
Already have one
Good, it smarts when you have to replace a jack.

Sounds like you're ready for your next video.

Maybe some Keith riffs when I get settled in.

I just went to the guitar store down the street and picked up a strap. I was curious how it would look on my tele so I walked into the electric room and low and behold, there's a Fender tele in blonde with a rosewood fretboard. I think it was the original ('69) that mine is based on because it had a finished neck (which I found to be incredibly grabby and slow) and it weighed a small ton. The fretboard was radius was flatter, too. The good news is that the strap (shown below) looks great on vintage blonde.
