#162 Pop Will Eat Itself "92 Degrees"
A friend and I were in an indie record store talking to the owner about the bands we like. He suggested three bands to us: Church, Sisters Of Mercy and Pop Will Eat Itself. My friend bought all three. When he got to PWEI, at the end of the first song I said, "You can keep this tape in the car. I'll never need to listen to it." Within a year, I was listening to it constantly. Sometimes when something is so different from everything else, it takes time for it click.
These guys are considered pioneers of "Grebo", a combination of dance-rock, psychedelia, pop, hip hop, punk rock and electronica. Other acts include Jesus Jones, The Wonder Stuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Carter USM.
Most of their songs feature two male vocalists trading lines or verses (a British Beasties kinda). My favorite song of theirs however features a guest vocalist, so the vox don't normally sound like this.
"Did you know, Putnam, that more murders are committed at 92 Fahrenheit than any other temperature? I read an article once. Lower temperatures, people are easygoing. Over 92, it's too hot to move. But just 92, people get irritable." [from the film It Came From Outer Space]
