I like both Luka and Tom's Diner. Perhaps you are making up for separating We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions by combining 2 other random songs?

I don't see anything wrong with overplaying a good song. There are very few that I find I get sick of. But that is likely personal opinion and taste.

WHOOPS! Sorry it was supposed to be "Luka" audio - not "Tom's Diner". My bad!

Sometimes the big breakthrough hit does remain my favorite song from an artist like SV's "Luka". There will more of these big "signature song" hits on the 333 coming up. And we're already past Enya, Nick Lowe, EMF, Beck, Danzig, 2 Live Crew and Janis Ian where my fav song from them all is their signature song/breakthrough hit.

But as we move up the list, it will show that it's more likely that a less successful single or deep album track becomes my fav song from an artist. The Deftones song above (#255) is a deep album track for example - that's my fav Deftones song. Also that acoustic rendition of the Poison song with the different lyrics (#276). Plus my favorite Melissa Etheridge (#314), Tom Petty (#319) and Bon Jovi (#330) are all smaller singles or deep album tracks.

I see your point; just because the radio plays Born to Run, Night Moves, or Come Sail Away ad-nauseum, doesn't mean they're any less good.

I should have been more specific; I'm not a fan of pop music, and the songs that get a lot of airplay tend to be the poppier ones. So while I admire the composition and lyrics of Luka, it's a poppy song, and when I look back on what I enjoyed the most from an album, it tends not to be the poppy stuff.

But also, when I'm making a list (now) of favorite songs (from 30 years ago), there's a fatigue factor, which figures into my ranking.

I see what you are saying. But I guess I have always been a sucker for the popier type sound at least to a certain extent. A lot of bands in the 90s+ were/are empty of anything but pop cookie cutter sound and that didn't do anything for me.

And yes overplay does affect ratings. Night Moves used to be my absolute favourite Segar song. Now its down the list a bit. I still like it but it does decrease in "value" with overplay.

Totally agreed on the fatigue/overplay/OD factor. In ranking songs I tried to not be very influenced by it. There are songs on my 333 that I'm dead sick of, but I still remember their greatness so I've tried to rank them on that greatness..... tried, anyway.

As for poppiness (like the super-poppy "Luka" vs "Left Of Center"), sometimes the poppiest song fades for me over time and other smaller singles or deep album tracks fly ahead of it. But sometimes that big pop song holds its title (plenty of those will show up on the 333).

Examples of poppier songs eventually getting overshadowed by another song:

Artist: Started with pop song / Now prefer this song

Awolnation: Sail / Run
Eurhythmics: Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This / Don't Ask Me Why
Godsmack: Whatever / Greed
Outfield: Your Love / 61 Seconds
Pet Shop Boys: West End Girls / It's A Sin
Prince: 1999 / DMSR
Steve Winwood: Higher Love / Back in the High Life Again

I stuck with Tom's because I like it better than Luka.
Severe fatigue from it back in the day, but I got over it after a while.
I also default to the DNA version because it's richer. I have the Vega cassette from back in the day, but obviously, I haven't listened to it in forever.

#252 Cure "A Pink Dream"

The Cure is my favorite band, but like many bands that push boundaries, sometimes they push in a direction that I don't think works. Wild Mood Swings (1996) to me was a big step down from Disintegration (1989) and Wish (1992). A lot of them aren't memorable and I often skip some. In fact, its two best songs ....... aren't on the album. Two of the six non-album b-sides are fantastic: "Adonais" and this one -- which would have made a much better single than all four they released.

I saw them once. June 2000 (Bloodflowers Tour). 28 songs. Damn near three hours if I remember right. I want to say it was awesome but big venue shows never thrill me. The band was great but I needed a telescope and it sounded like they were playing across a canal from me. But that's the venue (and my distance from the stage), not the band.

#249 Beastie Boys "So Whatcha Want"

Licsenced To Ill rocked my world. Paul's Boutique lost me. This song brought me back. (BTW eventually I recognized the genius of Paul's - a couple from that one are coming up eventually...)

#250 Joe Cocker "You Are So Beautiful"

So simple. So powerful. So beautiful (to mee-ee-ee-ee-ee). Don't hear it often, but I love for it to catch me off-guard once in a while and move me.

Is it just me, or does Koop look like he could be Joe's kid?

It took me a long tine to come around to Beasties in general. That guitar solo on Fight For Your Right was so terrible I couldn't take them seriously.
I still hate that solo, but have come to appreciate how brilliant they became. There was much more to the early albums that I didn't get till I saw how how they built on them.

@IdRatherBeSkiing Agreed on that solo! I loved Fight when it first came out because hair bands started getting lame (I think I already posted about this, so I won't blather on about it again) but even with how much I loved the song, that solo still made (and makes) me wince.

A while ago I started a list called 'good song, bad solo'. I only have four entries so far, but Fight is right at the top:

Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right"
Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Californication"
Sugar Ray "Streaker" (at end of song)

#248 Depeche Mode "Halo"

First of 9 entries for these guys. I would call this the best synthpop album of all time. Even its (non-instrumental) b-sides are fantastic. Fun fact: a pre-fame Janna Elfman is in the music video. She was directed to "dance badly".
