Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

I got burned out on Been Caught and Jane Says.
Stop, Mountain, and Just Because haven't been overplayed, and I can still crank them up.

Janet Jackson

Genre: pop, dance, r&b

Discovered: my cousin, "Nasty"

Other: Pictured above, the infamous Super Bowl nip slip. I don't buy for a second that it was a 'wardrobe malfunction'.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Nasty
2. Black Cat
3. Rhythm Nation
4. Again
5. Escapade

You got to be careful. You gotta have a J-O-B in the ’80s.
You gotta have some money [or] you can’t get no pussy. Listen to the radio. That’s what it’s about.
...
Janet Jackson got a hit record: “What Have You Done For Me Lately”.
That’s what they thinking. “What have you done for me lately?”
The record start off like that. “I know he used to do shit for you, but what has he done for you lately?”
“Baby, I love you.”
“What have you done for me lately?”
“You the only thing on my mind.”
“What have you done for me lately?!”
“We make good love.”
“What have you done for me lately?!”

Jason Mraz

Genre: pop, folk pop, alt pop

Discovered: probably FM, "The Remedy"

Other: He's MR. A-Z and he's all about the wordplay. Back in 2008, "I'm Yours" broke the record for 'most weeks on the Hot 100'. He held that record until Billboard changed the methodology and broke the chart in 2013. So as far as I'm concerned, he still holds that title. Unfortunately he jumped the shark with that song. I don't like anything he's done since - aside from his live recording of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" in 2009 (which airs on The Covers Channel).

HIGH FIVE:

1. I'm Yours
2. Geek In The Pink
3. You And I
4. Wordplay
5. Sleep All Day

I think we (Mrs Scotch) own Rhythm Nation.

Now I feel even less inclined to care what you think about QOTSA (not that it matters anyway).

That song cooks.
She's got a couple where the guitar player gets to cut loose.
There's three versions out there. The album version solo is done by some guy named Dave Barry. But an old roommate of mine had the cassingle and one side has the 'video mix' feautring Nuno from Extreme, and the other side has the 'guitar mix' with a solo by Vernon Reid of Living Colour!
He's got some decent stuff, but I never really connected with it.
I've got 10 of his songs in my MP3 collection, and I could only hum 6 of them. The other 4 I'd have to hear again to remember them.

I smirked at the @scotchandcigar comment about Mraz...

Janet's Rhythm Nation album was great.

I don't have the source but I remember reading that Lemmy of Motorhead said the Black Cat riff was one of his favorites.

Found it!

"I wanted to do a version of 'Black Cat' with her, but Sony wouldn't let me," he once recalled. "You could tell from the video that she was having a good time, that this loud rock music is what she really wanted to be doing. I love that fuckin' song. Great fuckin' song that, but the record company wouldn't let it be possible."

Jim Brickman

Genre: new age, elevator music

Discovered: my girlfriend (now wife)

Other: I really embarrassed Brickman when I saw him live years ago. Long story short: audience members were given paper to write a question on for him. My question was about a weird thing he did with his arms at the end of every song. My question was chosen, and he denied that he did this weird thing. The lady asking the question went "WHAT? YES YOU DO!" and started mimicking the weird arm thing (overdramatically too). He kept on denying it and you could tell it bothered him to even be asked about it.... but for the rest of the night, he didn't do it anymore LOL.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Hero's Dream
2. Dream Come True
3. The Gift (with Collin Raye & Susan Ashton)
4. Valentine (with Martina McBride)
5. Peace (with Collin Raye)

I'ma look for those versions.
I know that Nuno has worked with Rihanna and a lot of other people.

It was smirk-worthy
Jefferson Starship

You got in his head!!!!!
Well done.

I hadn't heard of the guy till about 4 years ago. My old boss liked him. After that, I couldn't turn around without tripping over Brickman.
The guy is everywhere.

Joan Jett/Blackhearts

Genre: rock, hard rock

Discovered: MTV? "I Love Rock N Roll"

Other: While I like her work, one day years ago I realized... JJ & TBH are basically a cover band. Her first 4 hits = all cover songs. Her last hit = cover song. Her only songs to reach the top 20 that weren't covers were co-writes with hit-writing monster Desmond Child.

HIGH FIVE:

1. I Love Rock And Roll
2. I Hate Myself For Lovin' You
3. Do You Wanna Touch Me
4. Little Liar
5. You Don't Know What You've Got

It’s good work if you can get it.

Shes supposed to be pretty nice in person. A local DJ was talking about hanging out with her after a show. She was down to earth and mixed it up with everyone for quite some time.

Sometimes it takes skill to know which songs to cover. Not all remakes are good or do as well or better than the original.

I am surprised you don't have "Crimson & Clover" on your list. It would be my #2.

John Cougar/Mellencamp

Genre: rock and roll, pop rock, roots rock

Discovered: MTV or FM. "Hurts So Good" probably.

Other: It might be his lowest-charting album from 1982-1996, but Whenever We Wanted is my favorite from him. I like every track on it. #2 and #5 below are from it.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Jack And Diane
2. Again Tonight
3. I Need A Lover
4. Crumblin' Down
5. Get A Leg Up
