Not listening to the radio much at all and then only 70s/80s/90s stations.
I play a lot of 2k music around my wife, son, office mate, band members and they end up liking some of them a lot. They'll hear a song 4 or 5 times and then say how much they like it. Granted, it's 1 in every 50 songs, but I know what would appeal to others vs what just I like.

I'd love to set up a 2k radio station that only played music that people like us would like. Problem is nobody would tune into it because they'd assume it's bad because it's 2000s music.

If I were tasked with programming a radio station, I would do a pop-rock/power-pop station playing everything from mid-70s to today. Songs that make you want to tap your feet, bob your head, shake your hips or even get up and dance.

Examples:

70s
Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me
Dave Edmunds - I Knew The Bride
Knack - My Sharona

80s
Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself
Hall & Oates - You Make My Dreams
Romantics - What I Like About You

90s
Counting Crows - Mr Jones
Cure - Friday I'm In Love
Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy

00s
Finger Eleven - Paralyzer
Mute Math - Typical
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue

10s
fun - We Are Young
Sheppard - Geronimo
Walk The Moon - Shut Up And Dance

20s
1975 - If You're Too Shy
Mammoth WVH - Distance
Trews - God Speed Rebel

Good rock and roll that makes you wanna dance is still being made. It's just not in the spotlight and there should be a place where people find it all without being subjected to all the "popular" garbage.

As my son got older and his tastes formed on his own, I started using his tastes as a filter of the few gems in today's wide sea of trash. In 2009 he was listening to Kids Place Live and my music so he was not much help.

I know you already know this, but my "favorites" list in Scotch Sampler goes from the late 60s to 2022, and I did two complete passes through that timeline.

And I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but I feel you're putting too much emphasis on top 40 radio. Many of us here have continued to listen to new music, but none of it has been through top 40 radio. I actually stopped listening to top 40 radio completely around 1972, except for the occasions where I've been held captive to it. Of course, now I listen to old top 40 radio for fun.

But this playlist (pop2k), for example, scores so poorly with us because none of us were listening to pop stations during that time.

Go to any weekly Hot 100 in the 80s and you'll find rock & roll, r&b, hard rock, A/C, country, pop/dance.... all genres represented and these are supposed to be the cream of the crop. These days it's all pretty much trap, mumble rap, "i'm that bitch" attitude girls, breathy-Eilish stuff or hackneyed modern country.

What I'd like is a station of new music without the above junk. In other words, a station that played stuff that SHOULD be hits because there's some quality, art and musicianship in them. Fuck the trendy viral tiktok meme Baby Shark, Gangnam Style, Chicken Fried, WAP bullshit.

Old artists still making good new music (and should still be in the top 40):

AC/DC - Witch's Spell
Alien Ant Farm - Everything She Wants
Barenaked Ladies - New Disaster
Billy Idol - Cage
Buckcherry - Hellbound
Cher - Walls
David Crosby - I Think I
Del Amitri - It's Feelings
Fixx - Wake Up
King's X - Give It Up
Liz Phair - Hey Lou
Hall & Oates - Philly Forget Me Not
Mick Jagger & Dave Grohl - Eazy Sleazy
Midnight Oil - At the Time of Writing
Ozzy Osbourne - Scary Little Green Men
Patty Smyth - Build A Fire
Paul McCartney - Come On To Me
Rick Springfield - Down
Stray Cats - Cat Fight (Over A Dog Like Me)

Newer artists making good music, worthy of the top 40 (instead of the other bullshit):

888 - Critical Mistakes
Alice Merton - No Roots
All Time Low - Getaway Green
Big Pink - No Angels
Bleachers - I Miss Those Days
BRKN LOVE - Shot Down
Christine and the Queens - Doesn't Matter
Chvrches & Robert Smith - How Not To Drown
Dirty Honey - California Dreamin'
Glorious Sons - Sawed Off Shotgun
Larkin Poe - She's A Self Made Man
Mother Mother - Life
Mat Kearney - Ships In The Night
Menzingers - Anna
Missio - I See You
Peace - You Don't Walk Away From Love
Royal Tusk - Die Knowing
Spoon - Do You
Why Don't We - How Do You Love Somebody

In my opinion, all of the above songs are hit and should be (or have been) in rotation on pop, A/C or rock stations. But eh, who am I....

Well, yes and no. I agree there was some music from most of those categories, but it has always leaned heavily towards vocal-oriented dance pop. It's been that way since the 60s. When I look at the Casey countdowns of the 70s, maybe 25% of the songs got played on the mainstream rock stations. And it gets worse in the 80s. That's why by 1986 or so, my count of "good" countdown songs drops to the single digits.

Just look at one example, the late 70s, say 77 - 79. The Clash, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson etc. were dropped for disco - Donna Summer and Andy Gibb.

Those stations exist - on terrestrial radio, on satellite, via streaming, and downloads. But the world changed in the 80s. Digital music changed the way we got music. And then in the 90s, it was online music services. And then in the 00s, it was satellite and streaming. It's all changed now. Your favorite music no longer has to play on top 40 radio. And the definition of top 40 radio is completely different.

It's no different than movies or TV. At one time, you had to go to a theater to see a movie, or tune to one of 4 channels to watch TV. Then videotape and cable became available. Then on-demand and downloadable content. Now it's unlimited streaming services.

Just think about YouTube. Imagine if someone told you - in the 70s or 80s - that you can instantly listen to any song or watch any music video. Casey Kasem's dead. We don't need the top 40 anymore.

Good 8
Okay 1
Bad 2
? 19

I am surprised to like 8 of them. Probably a new record.

BEST I RECOGNIZE
28 -- City High - What Would You Do?
25 -- Uncle Kracker - Follow Me
14 14 Lifehouse - Hanging By A Moment
12 17 Nelly f/ City Spud - Ride Wit Me
08 07 Aerosmith - Jaded
06 06 Dido - Thank You
04 01 Crazy Town - Butterfly

WORST I RECOGNIZE
18 13 Matchbox Twenty - If You’re Gone

14 14 Lifehouse - Hanging By A Moment

My wife's friend used this for her first dance at her wedding, so they had to go between slow dancing and rock dancing. Awkward. She should've talked to me, I have a very nice acoustic version they could have used instead - done by the original band.

08 07 Aerosmith - Jaded

Their last top 10 / top 40 / Hot 100 entry.

06 06 Dido - Thank You

Sampled in Eminem's "Stan"

04 01 Crazy Town - Butterfly

Samples Red Hot Chili Peppers "Pretty Little Ditty" (1989 - before they got huge and when I thought they were awesome)

03 03 Shaggy f/ Rayvon - Angel

Rips off "Angel Of The Morning" (Merrilee Rush/PP Arnold/Guys N Dolls/Juice Newton)

Love his drumming in Nirvana, and he's one of the coolest guys in rock (does a lot of awesome things), but I just can't get into the Foo's. They only have a few songs I think are okay and one I like enough to go out of my way for.

I feel like I should like their music more than I do. But Dave makes a good point...

“You know the whole dad rock thing? We’re totally dad rock,” he said. “Look, I’m 50 years old, I have fucking grey hair…But the funny thing is, I have never considered our band cool and I like that.”
