DRC Madness #23 - DRC All-Time Songs

Smells Like Nirvana is one of my favorite Weird Al videos – one of many. "Now I'm mumblin' and I'm screamin' and I don't know what I'm singin'." And the mouthful of marbles was a perfectly reasonable explanation for why Kurt Cobain sang the way he did.

The video and song are one of his best (and all are good IMHO) in terms of faithfulness to the original and cleverness of lyrics. And of course Dick Van Patten who I believe is in a couple of Weird Al videos. When I hear the opening of either Smells I can't tell which is which until I hear the lyrics. If I can understand them, it's not Nirvana.

As a bonus, if you watched the "My Sweet Lord" video you would have seen a bonus appearance of "Weird Al".

I appreciate all the time and effort you've put in to this list, IRBS. You deserve a hearty hand clasp. For anyone who hasn't seen W.C. Fields' The Bank Dick (1940), in which Fields' character, Egbert Sousé, manages to capture a bank robber, here is the "hearty hand clasp":

That’s awesome. I hadn’t seen that bit before.

Pretty wild when one of the most iconic songs of all time, that I'm pretty sure we put (or would put) on our best-of lists not only didn't make the top 40 on this list, but didn't place high in the original madness either.
It is #336 on my 447. Plenty of songs further down I am more surprised about.

It's a bit odd that you say that. I'm the one who ranked "one of the most iconic songs of all time" at #5. For one other person, it barely made their top 50. And it didn't make anyone else's top 50, including yours. So if anyone should be surprised, it would be me.

Many list-topping songs didn't do too well in our combined rankings. I can't even believe my own list; like, what's up with me? I see Whiter Shade of Pale, one of the most classic hits of them all, and I question how I put The Smithereens ahead of it. But that's what happens when we're forced to rank songs. And I think what IRBS is doing with our individual Top 50s is really interesting.

There are just too damned many good songs out there! That's a big part of why I can't make a list. Depending on the time of day, I'd have to rearrange it. The project would never be close to being right or finished.

I started your list, Mister Hectic, but you will have to finish it. You're welcome.

Hectic - A$AP Ferg/Diddy (LP/2020)
Hectic - Cardi B/DJ Hardwerk (LP/2017)
Hectic - Emont (LP/2021)
Hectic - Jonah Ledesma (--/2020)
Hectic City - Better Red Than Dead (LP/2002)
Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect - Decemberists (LP/2002)
It's Gettin' Hectic - Brand New Heavies/Gang Starr (LP/1992)
It's Gettin' Hectic -The Urge (LP/1995)
Spiritual Architect - Black Sabbath (LP/1974)
Sweet Architect - Emeli Sandé (LP/2016)
Thru These Architects Eyes - David Bowie (LP/1995)
We About To Get Hectic - Mobb Deep/Twin Gambino (LP/2014)

I'm stumped! Over 30,000 songs in my collection and not a single 'hectic' song. Well, I'll be darned.
Out of the 8,500 songs that I have ripped, about 1/3 of my CDs, I don't have any Hectics ot architects. I know Yes and Rush mention architects in lyics, and I thought I had something by Architecture in Helsinki.

Here is another one: Respect The Architect by Guru, Bahamadia and Ramsey Lewis. It first appeared on the 1995 CD Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality. This version is a remix by hip-hop producer Anthony "Buckwild" Best. I doubt Mister Hectic will adopt it as his theme song. It's awful!

I have no hectic in my collection... but I do have architects!

Not just songs:

Emil Bulls - The Architects of My Apocalypse
Megadeth - Architecture Of Aggression
Tommy Lee - Body Architects

But the band:

It gets more interesting as we go up. As I mentioned before, we all have very distinct views of what is in our top 50. Most of the songs have 1 or 2 voters. The highers ranking song with only 2 voters is @ #8. The highest with 3 is @ #2 (beating out the only 2 songs with 5 voters). The top 7 all have point totals over 100. It is also very apparent that the order is distinctly different than the madness.

And I get to say it again .... now on with the countdown ...
