You stated this previously, and I explained what I knew, and there was no comment. I just don't understand what you posted here. If you're calculating an "average" and a "mean", you must know what you did to get them, so you know the difference. I'll reiterate that IMO "average" is a general term, while "mean" is a specific type of average. Mean is the sum of all entries divided by number of entries. It's what most people think of when they refer to an average. But there are actually two other kinds of averages, neither of which would be appropriate here.
I went by my memory the first time. Mean I thought (from my dim recollection of stats class -- and I have not checked against your definition -- laziness) is simply the value of the middle entry in a sorted set. Average is the sum of the entries / number of entries. I think the difference is that if you have some really big or small values this can distort the average while the mean would usually give you the middle more accurately in most cases. As I said I did not update my wording as the error I made had no bearing on those calculations. And I did not use math for the mean. I just found the middle entry and used its value.
That's "median". They use it for incomes, and house prices. It's typically used when you might have a few entries that are substantially out of range, without causing the average to seem wrong.
